Irrational spider fear!
I have it and I've noticed it's quite the trend in today's society! I have it because my mother has it and I think that her screaming about a spider when I was kid imprinted in my mind that it was a creature I MUST be afraid of! Now I live with my SO who won't let me kill spiders and catches them and puts them outside for me or tells me just to ignore them. Eep!

Now everytime I see one and he doesn't let me kill it or put it outside (and let me see him put it outside!) I assume it's in the room...watching me. Okay..maybe it's not that bad but I've been brought to tears many a time by spiders who got on me or went near me in the basement when I'm doing laundry.

I know it is a silly fear because spiders (except black widows and brown reclues) can't do me any real harm...but...but...no matter how hard I try...eeeeeeep!!!

So I was wondering, how many of you have irrational spider fear?

I love spiders.....they're great. I used to be terrified of them too. Now when I see one in my room, I pick it up and put it in the garage or outside...

Why aren't you terrified of them anymore??

I used to... even the tiniest spider would have me running out of a room. Back when I was eight, I was opening the door to the garage at my mother's house and a black widow fell on me. That was the start of it. For no reason, it spiraled completely and utterly out of control.

But then, I started looking at their faces and touching them. They really have cute faces when you stop and take a look! And, even though you might be afraid, try to touch them. They tend to run away like big chickens. ;) Now, even if a spider rears its legs up at me, I just laugh at how big it's trying to look. I, too, catch them and take them outside. Poisonous ones are caught and taken out to the local state park.

Spiders give me the heebee jeebees!! But I leave them alone...unless it's the brown recluse spiders in our apartment the past couple weeks.

I used to be scared of alot of small creatures. I realized that they're not going to hurt you. They're just exploring. :)

If they're not bothering me, I'm not going to bother them. They can hang out in the corners, catching the bugs that sneak in when we let the cats in and out. Those bugs bother me more.

But my irrational/rational fear is bears. :shaker:

I'm not afraid of spiders at all..I had a dream when I was a kid about lady bugs being in my mouth and all over me..I get a shudder everytime I see one.I'm not fond of earwigs either, they have those big pincher things..

I don't know...I think this is one of those fears that you can't overcome! I mean, I was digging through the laundry basket yesterday and my SO looks over and says, "something just jumped out of the basket". I assume it's a spider, scream, and jump on the bed with him. When he was FINALLY done laughing he told me a sock jumped out of the basket. Grrrr.

But yeah i went with the "ahh ahhhhhh ahhhh!" because i do that until my mom or brother come in my room....sad isn't it? I am afraid they will hurt me...somehow!

I don't really like to kill anything, but spiders seem to be after me. I've found them on me quite a few times, and since I'm kinda terrified of them, they don't live long. I feel kinda bad though cause they've never bitten me. My spider killing rules are as follows:
- If they are big/hairy/moving fast/touching me then I freak out and get someone to kill them. I have been known to run from a spider and I'm proud of it.
- If they aren't messing with me and they're small, I'll either ignore them or get them in a cup to take outside.

I'm not nearly as scared of them as I used to be. For me it was just the big ones. I've gotten to where I can watch an entire documentary on tarantulas. I still think they're creepy as hell and the single most loathsome life form ever to evolve, but I can deal with it now. Constantly watching Return of the King may have been somewhat theraputic.

Around here we have something locals call bannana spiders due to their yellow and black coloring. They spin huge webs (which are strong enough to trap small birds) and can get pretty large themselves. We just had one that, if her legs were straightened and extended, I think would have been a good 5 inches in length. Ugly as hell, and I can hardly think of a nastier way of killing prey than that employed by spiders, but they're also kind of fascinating.

I wish i had transcripts from the orignal chat room we had. There my fellow MWers is a story that amused Mithrea (Holly) and Paygun to no end. A spider (large brown ICKY ONE) tried to kill me. Okay, it was crawling around the floor by my feet and it had DEATH IN ITS EYES. All the beady ones....I saw it I did. I'm not irrational. I'm quite rational when I'm taking a Swifter mop to'em.

The funny thing is, I play D&D and my character is a half-Drow (okay, RPG players get the humor of that one) for all of those that don't play, Drow are Dark Elves who worship the Spider Goddess Loth. I get teased quite a bit at my gaming group. But at least my "make believe self" can handle her fears unlike my real self who kills any of those blood-sucking venemous MONSTERS in her house.

*yes I know that's not true, but being afraid of spiders and bats, I never claimed to be normal*

i am somewhat afraid of spiders. I tend to ignore them unless they are in my way. There is a little brown spider that has taken a liking to the door of my mailbox, so whenever i have to check the mail, i do so as fast as possible... if the spider is too close to me, i swat it a little with a newspaper... not hard enough to kill it, just so that it falls to the ground. I rarely kill spiders, thats my little brothers job. i especially hate it when they decide to live in my shower though...

Ermm...*terrified of spiders* i kill them, have let some go free before. I have reasons for not wanting them in my house or near me...I've been bit by posionous spiders a lot, esp. when i was little. I was bit right next to my eye and it swelled shut for about a week (i wonder what wouldve happened if it was my eye....) . also have been bitten in the ankle and it left a dime-sized hole in my leg. :/

Eeep and you live in Florida! My mom always put the fear of the spider into me with her stories of them. She went into a room in a barn to get some equipment for a horse (this is while in Florida) and when she went to leave there were 2 BIG wolf spiders running back and forth across the door and the wall that she had to go through to get out. She just stood and screamed until my Dad came and killed them...of course he had to kill them with a hammer and a 2 by 4....shudder.

As long as they're not in my house I couldn't care less about them. There was some type of garden spider in my flowers a week or so ago and I got up real close and examined it because I never saw that kind before. But then my stepfather killed it

I once went camping and decided to sleep out under the stars instead of in a tent... woke up the next morning covered in about 40 wolf spider bites, and found two living and four dead wolf spiders were sharing the sleeping bag with me. ;) No doubt I killed the four that were dead - I toss and turn quite a bit in my sleep.

There's nothing wrong with killing insects in my book, but only the kind that can harm you or your home (termites, wasps, mosquitoes,...)

LOL, yea I'm afraid of them (and GUESS I do realize i'm a guy and suppose to fend for myself :P ) mostly afraid because I always think they'll bite me before I 'attack' them so whenever I see one I'm inclined to squash it.

Normally they don't bother me, but I do tend to catch them and put them outside. Last week possibly the biggest house spider i've ever seen was crawling around the lounge, I left it be until it fell from the wall into my handbag. I had to go and empty it in the garden, including all the junk i keep in there. I couldn't bear the thought of it crawling around in there waiting for me to reach in for my keys. :yikes:

I wonder if it's true that you swallow 8 spiders a year in your sleep. Where do they get these figures from?

TigathanWinds
August 7th, 2004, 05:42 PM

Yep...I fear spiders. A lot. ^^;;

However, I'm slowly overcoming my fear. I don't believe in killing them (why should I deprive them of life just because *I'm* the one with the irrational fear?), so that leaves me with the alternative of catch and release.

I don't pick them up with bare hands, though! I dunno which are poisonous and which aren't (except for daddy longlegs...and of course black widows and brown recluses are dangerous), so I use a cup. I've gotten better...a year ago, there would be just no way I would get within six feet of a spider.

I think a real turning point was when I was taking a shower and then discovered a daddy longlegs clinging to the side of the tub, about ready to be swept into the tub and down the drain. I had nothing to pick it up with...so, in a sudden act of bravery, I picked it up with my hand and put it outside the tub. I was freaked at first...but then it just crawled off my hand and went on it's merry way, no harm done. That lessened my fear of spiders significantly.

I'm not really afraid of spiders too much. Last summer I got bitten by some type of spider and now have a pea sized scar on my hand but it was my own fault I was trying to be brave and save a kitten so had crawled underneath my house. There's a huge black and yellow spider not too far from my front door. Really pretty and I leave them be as long as they don't bother me. I really like to watch them make their webs too.

my weird spider story
i usually have no problems with spiders and think its silly to be afraid of them
however ... that being said i was at the lake this wekeend
and in the corner of the biffy door was a spiderweb and all afternoon and evening the spider would sit in the center of its web waiting for something to fly into it
and while it was waiting ... it would watch you sitting there on the seat and every little move i made .. it would twitch
talk about give me the willies, i so did not want to go to the biffy the whole time i was there
and then it disappeared .. and that was very disconcerting .. think" spider under biffy seat .. waiting to pounce on intruder's butt"
lol ... i went the long way to the flush toilet after that ....

Arinya
August 9th, 2004, 11:23 PM
I had something simliar happen to me before. I went into the bathroom at work, noticed someone hadn't flushed so I flushed for them and whoosh a big black spider came swishing down from the sides (he was hiding under the seat!) and went down the drain! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! I couldn't use the toliet for a whole week there without flushing first just incase one was hiding...waiting...

Yeah, I'm afraid of spiders--always have been. I used to make somebody squish 'em, but the kinder, gentler me now feels that unless they invade my personal space and cause a serious case of the oogies (in which case they're getting smooshed), they should be shooed outside where they belong. Of course, hubby or kids do the shooing for me. :p

I´m not afraid of spiders, I belive I have my father to thank for that.He has always been interested in insects, knows the name of them (in latin too!), what they eat, were they prefer to live and so on. As I child he showed my brother and me lots of insekt, butterflies and spiders. So I learned not to be afraid of them and to show respect for all living things in nature. If a be or wasp lands on me I just let it take its time and sooner or later it will fly away.(Note:We don´t have african/killer bees in sweden, if we had, I would not be so tough!!! :fpeek: )

I. HATE. SPIDERS.

i didn't used to. i had a large glow-in-the-dark 'skeleton' of a tarantula, but i think my fear of spiders came about when i was in grade 5 and one of my *classmates* put a plastic spider on my chair as i stood up for some reason. i sat back down, screamed and i got in trouble. Got 2 pages of dictionary work. i swear the ******* was laughing, the nasty, slimy, -- ok, i'll stop now. but, yeah, now i have irrational fear of spiders. i've stayed over at my friends place, and i'm sleeping on the floor of her room with my feet just under her bed, and lying in the dark, i can imagine spiders crawling all over me. it's enough to keep me awake for hours. even if there's no spiders, just the thought of one being there scares me.

Awww, I'm always saddened to see how scared people are of what I consider a very protective totem!

Spiders are great, I leave a few webs in the corners of the house through the summer, they deal very nicely with my least favorite critter....Flies! Oddly, I've always seen spiders as protective rather than scary and we never kill them when we find them inside.

Heh, several weeks ago my SO woke up and walked around the property, he promptly called to me to come outside and look. All around the foundation of my home were funnel webs, just the webs, no spider to be seen anywhere. There were close to 200 webs around the foundation of the house...a phenomenon I had never seen before in my 9 years of living at this house. I filed the incident in the back of my mind, remembering also that I had dreamed of spiders 2 times that week.

Later on the psycho X started his crap again and I thought of the spiderwebs. When I got home, they were gone. Then, last Friday the Psycho-X showed up at my house, he proceeded to rant and rave and tried to 'call out' my SO so he could fight him *rolls eyes*. It was only after he left that we noted the numerous spider webs around the foundation of the house again. Once more there were almost 200 of them and they disapeared within 3 hours of the incident.

This has happened several times since the original day...
I think I may start looking around the foundation of the house on a daily basis since this magical little arachnid may be trying to return the favor LOL.

My theory is "If they're fine with me, I'm fine with them."

The last place I lived in used to attract quite a lot of huntsmen (about 2-3 inches across, NOT dinner-plate sized (no matter WHAT Avalon or Douglas Adams says :p :D ) and non-venomous) and I would have no problem with them staying there for three or four days; usually after that they tend to wander off on their own. If they repeatedly try to encroach on my territory though they go outside, but never the squish treatment - the only time I ever do that is if they're in my car (spiders in cars at night, venomous or not, are NOT a good thing!)

One time I had one that crawled onto my desk near the computer, and actually crawled across the keyboard while I was there (I had to stop typing) and got to the glass of coke I had beside the keyboard. It stood there for a while and I realised it was drinking the water formed from condensation on the outside of the glass, so I went and filled a milk bottle cap with water and put it there for it... and the funny thing is I would SWEAR that it looked at me as if to say thanks! I don't give much credit to spiders as far as intelligence goes but I would swear blind to that. I can't help but feel that I achieved something that day...

Okay I know I go on!

ditto. but I don't see mine as an irrational fear. It's nice and healthy to me lol. I have good examples as to why I am afraid.
For instance, once I was in the back of Walmart, where the employees' lockers were, and I was coming from mine. I had just walked through a doorway when I felt something tickling my neck. Well I grabbed at it thinking it was my hair and I ended up grabbing a BIG JUICY SPIDER. I screamed, threw it down and stomped it. I was already afraid of them before that, but it sure didn't help. Now everytime anything touches my neck I get creeped out.
Another time I was standing by the kitchen table at my moms and saw something small and black run across the edge of the end table by the couch. That right there got me cause I didn't know what kinda bug it was (yet). Then I saw it JUMP from the table down onto a bag on the floor. That's when I started screaming. THEN it ran off the bag right at me. I was up on the closest chair in a heart beat still screaming my butt off. Of course my mom laughed cause it's not like the spider couldn't have just jumped onto the chair, but that's not the point. I lost all rational thought when that thing jumped. That right there will freak me out more than anything else. Some spider jumping in my direction. No, any direction really.
And now I live in these apartments where there are brown recluse spiders everywhere. I am SO not living here ever again.

I hate them, they scare the willies out of me, I don't care if they're outside but I can't stand them if they are inside my house *shudders*

When I was about 12 or so, I stuck my arm in a sleeve that had a nest in it, I was covered and I mean covered in bites from my wrist to just above my elbow. My forearm went up like a balloon. Since then I just don't like them being around me.
Yesterday a Daddy Long-Legs nearly landed on my friends head as it was spinning a web to get to the floor, she jumped , I freaked, shrieked and ran out of the room, hubby laughed, hit it with the bug spray and stomped on it.
*Phew* disaster averted...

I am terrified and facinated by them. If they are behind glass I will look at them I will admire webs where I see them. If they are outside I am carefull to avoid them but will look at them. Inside I scream and someone comes and kills it or puts it outside depending on who it is. My one son is running a spider preserve in his bedroom in the hopes I won't clean it. My dirt devil is a wonderful thing I don't have to get too close to get rid of them.

Ya know, that used to keep me from bein' afraid of them, once upon a time. Then I had a spider ATTACK a broom I was trying to sweep him up with, and my whole outlook on spiders changed. I mean, if that had been my leg, I would have been in some SERIOUS pain.

That's easy for you to say but I am the one running in terror as they sit and look at me calmly evaluating how many meals I would make.

I don't like spiders, if they come into my area, they get squished. If they stay away, they live...at least most of the time.

Nothing is worse than feeling helpless, and that is what is happening to you. So lets talk about what you can do. First you can vacume your house, get up into the corners, window sills, anywhere you see webs. Is your basement dirt? Or walled? You can use a broom or vacume where webs are there too. Those new swiffer type things that are on long handles help in hard to reach areas too and are great for dust.

Then go get one of those long extentioned handled thing that has the bushy brush on the end. Go outside and run it along the eaves of the house and corners, windows and places you see the webs. Keep the plants and trees cut away from the house. These things will cut down some of your problems. And give you some contol. Our pest control guy does the above outside, and while we still have some here and there, I don't see many, so that is cool with me.

They don't bother me. I guess you could say we get along..

There's another type bug that scares me so bad I get chills any time I see one and it's all I can think about but I won't kill them. Irrational fear I don't know how to overcome. ..I don't even say the name of this bug.

As long as they leave me alone, I'm fine.. well with the exception of a brown recluse or black widow. If I see either of the two, I'm gettin' the bug spray out! :uzi:

They are soooo cute! Really, I wanted one as a pet though I was afraid because if someone decided to handle it and dropped the cute it could die. they cannot take falls. The ones that find their way inside I leave alone...plus they get rid of all the rest of the nasty biting and blood sucking bugs.

yeah, I hate those big old potato bugs, they simply gross me out. I think it is because of their size. They are suppose to be related to cock roaches I think. They like roots of the plum trees. I hate them a lot.

I have a friend that totally made a sissy out of her boy, she use to scream and get all flustered, no matter what type of bug it was. Didn't matter, thus he has a fear of insects.

I use to like the little rolly Polly sow bugs, the ones that curl up. I guess I didn't have much to do as a kid because I can remember rolling them down our walk way to see how far they would go. Never smashed them, but I am sure they didn't care for the ride much.

I was raised with two brothers and my mom was cool with bugs, worms, snakes, small rodents, we even raised chicks in our dinning room, and we lived in town.

My dad screams like a ten year old girl when he encounters them.

My mom kills them and makes it rain.

They eat mosquitoes, so how can_I_really hate them?

I went with If it doesn't bother me I don't bother it because although I dont like them I understand they are good to have around and if it isnt causing me harm I wont bother it.

some are creepier than others, but the only time i kill them is if i know for a fact that its poisonous and its in the house. my husband squishes on the spot, he is REALLY aracnophobic. i do find the lil bitty furry wolf spiders to be cute......

I'm not scared of spiders at all ( unless they are poisonious!), I actually like them.
We have one quite big one in our house that I am quite fond of ... sometimes my brother catches bugs and gives them to the spider ... which is kind of weird and maybe going to far ... but generally, I like spiders!!
I'm weird because I am scared of snails and slugs ....

I am completely indifferent when it comes to spider. I don't like them and I don't dislike. If they get in the house, I'll try to get them onto a piece of paper and put them outside.

I am a huge Arachnophobe. I hyperventilate, scream, run and cry....when they are big ones anyway.......
....hence I chose "Ahhhh! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

Spiders...depends. Sometimes I will scream at the sight of a spider, sometimes, I'll just sit there and study them.

Just depends really. I don't see spiders too often though. Yet once I had spiders reoccuring in my dreams. IT scared me to death...especially since they were also reoccuring with tornadoes too. Spiders + Tornadoes=bad

I have no problems with spiders. Where I live [in New Jersey] there are no dangerous or poisonous spiders. I usually leave them alone if I see one in the house.

It's not the spiders that bother me,it's their webs they make. That creeps me out to no end :hairraise Just the thought of walking through one makes me cringe.

Creator created them and they are sacred as all animals are. I have to admit I scream "get them off get them off" if they are on me, but I don't want them killed. they just get lifted outside by someone brave enough of on the end of a broom hopefully they aren't too big. sometimes I study them. Many sacred stories about them. I dont like going through webs bc there might be a spider in them and I dont like them on me. I have been chased by spiders before.

I love spiders, they're mystical creatures that are just so misunderstood. My girl thinks they're out to get her. I will usually even let one live, even if it dive bombs off of one of my shelves overhead while lying in bed.... if I happen to see it coming!

I hate them! HATE! But, as long as they don't come in my house, I leave them be. In my house, that's a different story.

When I was a teenager instead of grabbing bug spray, I used hairspray - Worked like a charm. Well I was in the bathroom one time and a BIG HUGE Wolf Spider came up through the drain. I was crying and yelling for it to go away LOL. I turned around and grabbed a can of hairspray and let loose on it. After I had seriously used at least half the can of spray I stopped and it turned around and looked at me as if to say "Got a comb?"

Ugh I hate spiders.

When I was six I woke up in the middle of night because something was making my face iche. Lone an behold it was a giant fishing spider probably scared as bad as I was but non-the-less right on my eye. I screamed like a little girl flicked it off me, turned on the light and saw just how big the thing was (like a silver dollar) and watched it scram, it was fast!, but not fast enough for the shoe I had in my hand. Vengance upon the spider was exacted. But the toll has been a fear of spiders ever since. I voted for kill em squish em stomp em shoot em. I have actually shot a spider with a shot gun...most satisfying.
