:RuNew: Questions, questions, questions!

A few days ago when I was trying to meditate ... I was sitting on my couch focusing on clearing my mind. After a while, when I think I may have finally been *getting somewhere* I felt suddenly as if I was falling backwords through a huge hole in the couch and toppling over in a free fall. It ended abruptly, as my muscles clenched, I gasped for air and opened my eyes.

Later I asked one of my friends about it and they said it was common ...

Really, I was just wondering if this had ever happened to anyone else too? How you got past it, I found it very hard to keep my deep, slow breathing going. Or if there are any alternative ways you might recommend?

I'm not exactly sure, but I think it means that you were going deeper into a trance state. That happens to me as I fall asleep once in a while.

Yes actually, the exact same thing happened to me years ago before I became a serious hardcore meditater XD Only my came along with visions and ended when a monster like claw (which I seemed to be running away from) grabbed me and I felt this shooting pain up through my arm. Then I opened my eyes and everything stopped.

To be honest I'm not exactly sure what it was (how did your friend explain it?) I haven't thought about it much as it was several years ago. Although I had a friend training as a Zen monk in Japan who told me that the mind doesn't like being empty of thought, and that visions in meditation (at least from the Zen perspective) are the mind trying to kickstart thought again.

sounds like an Outer Body Experience, you muscles tensing brought you back, but otherwise you were falling out of the physical body. Just a thought, maybe not the answer, but something to consider?

i experience something like that, but possibly not as strong, whenever i meditate or concentrate on any magickal works. i feel like im falling backwards and sometimes it feels like my eyes are looking further inside myself, so actually i think its a good thing.
blessed be

that happened to me one time as well!
I felt like I was being sucked into a hole..slowly falling back or something..
made me kinda freaked out to meditate that deeply again...
never knew why that happened to me as well

I have meditated sitting on my bed before and felt the same exact thing. I talked to some people and they said that it was normal also. But if it scares you maybe you should just meditate that deeply a little more gradually

Its good to know I'm not the only one this has happened to .... it seems like your experience was a tad more scary though.

My friend really didn't say that much about it, except that it was common. Hes not big on details. Atleast I know now what may cause any visions that come with meditation for future reference!

Maybe ... I don't know much about Outer Body Experiences. Can you have one accidently while trying to meditate?

Thanks everyone for all the replies! ;) It's nice that I'm not the only one this has happened to! I actually didn't think I was meditating that deeply, or even at all. Atleast I know I've kinda made progress! Next time I'm sucked into my couch maybe now I'll have the nerve to follow where it leads ... it just might be a good thing.
