View Full Version : The Moons of Hecate
true sadness
August 8th, 2004, 08:46 AM
Does anyone know what the moons of Hecate symbolize? whenever I do a search the only thing that comes up are pendants that are being sold. Is it a valid symbol or is it just a pretty pendant?
Thanks you.

Is this the symbol: http://www.abaxion.com/sd891.jpg then yes I think it is a symbol of Hekate. It symbolizes her different moons. New Moon, Full Moon and Dark Moon. But her Moon is really the Dark Moon, even though She rules all of them. The site HedgeWitch gave has some pretty good info on this.

What do you mean about the moons? Moon phases? If it's moon phases, Hekate's usually paired with the dark (new) moon.

From the research I've done in this field, moon symbolism seems absence in the ancient iconography and expressional art related to Hecate. There are, however, plenty of ancient writers who refer to Hecate and her relationship to the moon. Clear and distinct crescents/moon phases associated with Hecate appear to be more modern assignments.
The older "Hecate Wheel" seems to be the most common symbol, and appears to be related more to a maze than to lunar phase. But, its triple symbolism may have been meant to indicate lunar cycles.

i see the Hekate's Wheel image (which i wear daily) as a depiction of Her triple nature of Earth, Sea and Sky.
if you imagine it from a bird's eye view, it looks like the top of Alkamene's famous statue from the Acropolis. (this one (http://www.pacificnet.net/~spectre/Temple/fromtemplesteps.html))
Raven's right, there are very few references to Hekate as a 'Moon Goddess' in ancient times.
the ancient Greeks saw the New Moon as the beginning of each new month, and a such it was a liminal point, or transition. for this reason Hekate was thought of as the Goddess of the New Moon.
in the second century CE the Chaldeans saw Her as THE Moon Goddess in their neoPlatonic system of magick. the Sun represented the 'Intellible World' (heaven) of deity, and the Earth represented the 'Sensible World' (material world) of man. Hekate was considered to be the 'Cosmic Soul' (Hekate Soteira) which flowed between and yet kept separate the two. as such She was the mediator between man and deity, and in this system She was symbolised by the Moon.

The owner of that website also follows the Dianic trad. I know here. She's not mean spirited. She's just following her tradition. She's not a man-hating feminist. Maybe you should get to know a person before you judge!

I agree, but also remember she was considered a Goddess of the crossroads, and offerings were often left for her where three roads met. :)

true.
but it must also be remembered that these were not just physical crossroads, but metaphorical ones too. any big decision, any physical or spiritual transition, basically any 'major life choice' would be considered a crossroad (or 'liminal point'), and therefore sacred to Hekate.

Well, as soon as she found out that I'm male, she started insulting and telling me that my opinions don't matter. (She also said some other 'harsh' things but that had nothing to do with me being who I am.)
Now, I have every right to judge her. (Note: I am judging her based on her behaviour towards me, and not anyone else as far as I know.)
She might be nice to you since you're a woman. If you were a man, things would probably be different.

Wait -- what do you mean? I am interested in this -- having visited this website previously on a search for Hecate info. So what happened? Did you email her and she insulted you? Just curious.
Also, in my opinion, NO ONE should be insulted on the basis of gender, race, creed, etc.etc......

This was a year or two ago, so the details are blurry...
I think I posted in her guestbook about how I was interested in Hekate info and I expressed my opinion that she shouldn't call herself "Lady Hecate" because she's not the Goddess herself. Also, since I was a Wiccan then, I asked her why she had such harsh views towards the religion.
The post was deleted. (I think if the posts in her guestbook somehow disagree with her, she just deletes them. Kind of immature in my opinion, but to each his/her own.)
Then I got an email from her about how I'm immature for being 'negative' in her guestbook and how she thinks that men can't really understand Hekate to truly worship/honor her. Her basic style of expressing herself gives me the idea that she thinks I'm lower than her or something.
Also, I think she has this online women only group. I had no problem with that. But back then, she used to have a disclaimer that says "Women ONLY, NO men allowed." Well, that sounds kind of sexist to me, but maybe I'm just reading too much into word choice...
I'm not saying that I was all goody-goody myself, since I am very opinionated, but I never felt so much hatred for being male before.

Sounds to me like she insulted you because you insulted her, Ater. Who are you to tell her what she can or cannot call herself? As a Dianic, I've been offended by your comments in this thread. If you want to bash someone's path, then how about at least starting a new thread for it, rather than hijacking someone elses?

She does have an online group for women only. It's a Yahoo ecoven and I'm a member of it.

Not only is it offtopic, it's against the rules to bash anyone or any religion.

First, I think it's more insulting to Hekate if one of her followers called themselves by her name than anything I have to say. That's just my personal opinion.
Second, which of my statements in this thread had offended you?
Third, my intention was not to 'hijack' this thread. I just offered my personal experience with the site's owner since the website was metioned.

Since when am I bashing a religion?

Her bashing of you and your gender did not occour on this website.
Your bashing of her, and HER religion, DID occour on this website.
YOU were the one who brought it over here.
And, as you know you did, you threadjacked this.
Consider this an official warning, and back off.

Isil, if you want to speak as a mod, use the mod mode. Don't put lies into your warning or personal problems you might have with me from other threads.
PM if you have any personal problems with me, but do not use you position as a mod to state total lies ("and HER religion").
