Ok... I've finally decided to get some of these different methods up here, but please note that these are methods that work for me. Some of these methods may not work for you personally.

So I will first start off quoting something that Moondragon posted in the precautions thread.

Ok I agree with most of what kaylara said thier is some definite precautions to take an easy way to start.. believe me children (expecially me!!) used this It is not hard for anyone to do, my advice is start small and work up. If you have done visualization you will find this technique pretty easy..

Find a quiet spot

Even you breathing, slow it down
(if you know how center yourself it helps with deeper trances)

fine a fairly bare wall solid colors work best.

Then start to contentrate on what your target is usually for this case like a bad habit you want to get rid of..
Metally picture yourself going through the process of getting th goal or on the end result.

When you feel ready slowly drift out of the trance. then some people have thier goal written on a peice of paper which is now burned or sealed in some ritual way.

Do this for a week with the same goal and write down your feelings and impressions afterwards.

Common feelings or Physical affects of trancing:

When you enter a trance alot of people routinely expirence double vision when entering trace.

Mild disorentation and lightheadedness if surfaceing from trance quickly. Some people expirence headaches when interupted and ubruptly coming out of trance.

Drowsyness or sense of fatigue afterwards.

A disconnection with the body similar to the feeling of floating.

What technically is the trance state?

I feel this is an important thing to state it helps to metally visualize what you mind is doing.....
There are five states of conciousness named scientifically as Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Theta.

These states are easily identified from the others by the normal operation of everyones body.

Alpha- Is the Trance state, also considered your brains actions during daydreaming. you are able to be physically awake but have similar weighted feeling as if you were sleeping in this state.

Beta-Normal Operation state, walking around interacting with others .

Delta- Sleep state you usally are not aware of what is around you. you are in full sleep.

Theta- In between of Alpha and delta, State between awareness and sleep, very weighted, not very concious you might know what is around you but it is very difficult to move. Some trance masters are able to enter this realm in a trance.

It is also important to note that Everyone will naturally enter ALL of these states in a normal days function. Trancing is simply the mastery of being able to control When and Why and What for you are entering Alpha State.

This is a very Basic Overview of the states of consiousness and trancing a great book for this is Ravenwolfs "to light a sacred Flame", of course books on trancework, and dun dun dun........Psycology books the latter really goes into detail of these states and is definately a recomended read or someone considering trancing.

Here is a page with some information on trance and the different forms of trance. It would be wise to check it out!

Ok.

First method I will be discussing is trance induced by music. (This is not only "Trance Music")

If you are a musician, I am sure that you recognize this situation. You are playing a piece that you know well, and you notice that the piece sounds especially good. The tones are blending into each other in perfect harmony, and you get the feeling that you are part of the music.

In nine years of band at school, I cannot say how many times this has happened to me. Some people call it "getting into the Zone". Many athletes report the same situations for their respective sports (Surfing, Skateboarding, Skiing, Bike Riding, Etc.)

So, for this exercise, pick a piece of music that has a specific significance to you personally. Sit in a comfortable position. (Don't lay down if you can help it.) Listen to the music, hear the rise and fall, the harmonies and the discord. Let yourself feel the music emotionally. Let your mind be absorbed in the music. Stop when you feel ready to stop.
Record your feelings, findings, etc.

If it is a short peice should we keep repeating it or go on to another peice of music?

It depends on you... If you want to continue with the same piece of music, that is fine. A song I use a lot of the time is "Children" By Robert Miles, which is a kind of techno song, but it holds a lot of personal significance, so I will put the song on repeat. I have also found that changing songs can be good, but like I said, that's all in personal preference.

I am a classical Musician as well, and I think that music can have very different effects on you depending on what music you choose to use during trance.
Tribal music works very well for this, and I tend to use music without words so that they do not influence my trance. But I have found that the pure moods CD works very well.

I have been using the method of Trance Dance for a few years now with good results. The CD "professor trance & the energisers-Shamans Breath" is also accompanied by a book that takes you through how to use this technique and breathing exercises. It can make you very sore if you are overly energetic. The maenades use a head movement from side to side to induce trance also.

Greetings. I am glad to know that I am not a loon. Inhave always practiced this method for divination. Or as some would say conversations with my inner being. But I always drew a strong connection betwixt this method and that of self hypnosis. Which brings about changes in our sub-conscious self and improve our constitution and will towards the goal at hand. I have made documents on improving ones "trancework" and the concentration needed to hold it for long periods of time. If anyone is at all interested e-mail me and I will send you the text file, of if enough people ask I will add it to my web page.

Here's a method of inducing trance that I've found quite helpful. There's actually two different ways to do it, but I'll post both of them for you. :)

First:

Sit with your eyes closed and focus on the most obvious sounds around you. Slowly filter these sounds out and listen for the more difficult external sounds (ie: grasshoppers vs. cars). Gradually filter these sounds out and begin to focus on the sound of your breathing. Slow your breathing down and then filter this sound out. Then, focus on the sound of your heart beat. Slowly filter this sound out, hearing each beat become softer.

When you're ready to come out of the trance, open your eyes slowly, feeling yourself becoming more aware as you open them.

Second:

Sit with your eyes closed and focus on the most obvious physical sensations you have ( ie: a breeze). Slowly filter these feelings out. Then, focus on the feeling of your clothes on your body. Filter this feeling out of your awareness and then become aware of the feeling of your body's moving (ie: eyes or hands, something rather obvious). Slowly filter these feelings out and become aware of the feeling of your breathing. Slow your breathing down and then filter this sensation out. Then, become aware of the feeling of your pulse and filter this feeling out.

I've noticed that the second method provides a rather deep trance. I haven't tried combining the two yet. I suspect that they could provide an even deeper trance. I usually close my eyes because visual stimulus breaks my concentration. I'm slowly working up to where I can do these and possibly work on eliminating conscious awareness of the things that I am physically seeing. <shrugs> Something that I have noticed is that with the second induction method, I have been able to slow my heart beat down some. I haven't played around with that for fear of accidentally doing myself some harm. <shudders>

Here is the link to the first installment of the trancework
documents I promised everyone. I hope I have not missed any details. I was a little rushed as life seems to be demanding my attention in a million directions right now. http://users.tmok.com/~lionfire/trancework.htm
Please keep in mind that I promised to share "my" method, not the method of any particular group.

hi

I think i have been in trance before, i was meditating, problay for half an hour but it felt like i was just closing my eyes, nothing was really happening but when i opened my eyes, it felt like i had fallen back into my body.

was i in a trance?
Or what exactly happens when one is in a trance, does one see anything or travel on the astral plain?

Trance, as far as I know, is another word for an altered state of consciouness. We usually entere into light trances when we're concentrating intently on something, like reading a good book or watching television. There's quite a few different possible trance techniques that are used, all of them usually involve some method of focusing and training the mind to maintain a certian level of concentration.

Usually, people don't travel anywhere in trance. To project yourself, you need to focus on where you want your otherself to go and then keep that focus in mind. It's a little difficult but it is possible to do it. Some people start with simple exercises, like a place they are familiar with and then gradually move to other places they are less familiar with.

It is possible to see something while you are in a trance state. If you are in a deep enough trance state, you can even feel things. A trance exercise that I use as a meditation involves entering a semi-light trance state called alpha and then visualize an apple in my hand. Friends that have watched me to this exercise are rather surprised when they see the impression of the apple in my hand. <shrugs> It's a little difficult to do because I'm out of practice, but with work you can see and manipulate things.

I'm not sure, but that's how I belive alot of spells are done by many different traditions. I'd have to look that up again though. A good collection of meditation and trance work exercises can be found in Starhawks book the Spiral Dance. While I don't agree with alot of her politics, I won't say that her work isn't half bad. She put together several very good exercises for some one that's learning how to meditate. :D
