I personally don't see them as anything more then words. I used to swear almost constantly when I was 11-14, but once I hit HS I was told to tone it down. They don't bother me in anyway.

Not too much..but when I've had enough I've been known to let a few loose. It's so funny to think about the look on my husband's face when I've been really angry..which really takes a lot.

I cuss like a sailor. I get it from my job mostly lol. Doesn't bother me much.. but I don't pay attention to it much, so if it bothers the people around me, they have to say so.

I rarely swear, but I don't have any "moral" issues against swearing.... I just think you get hooked on certain words (profanity, catch-phrases, cliches.etc) and you use them so much that it becomes almost effortless.
I think it's just a habit. I try not to habitually use any word repeatedly to express myself, only because I find it a fun challenge to my vocabulary to find new ways to express myself. I do not always succeed.
Also, if I do swear, it doesn't exactly have the effect that I would like--it's kind of like "oooh look, the prissy white girl swore..." Every time I do it, it just seems false to me.

I was in the navy. I was taught the art of oscenety by masters! I'm not as bad about it as I was when I was in. Though I do it myself, I don't like it when it's done to excess, and I don't think it should be done much in public, and I try not to do it around my kids. It got old among sailors for whom literally every other word in a sentence would be F or one of its derivatives. There were times when I wanted to ask them, "Don't you know any other adjectives?" but most of them didn't know what an adjective is, so I held my tongue.

I swear also but I am trying to tone it down. Hearing those words come out of my five year old was a shocker. I am doing well at behaving myself. He starts school very soon. I also will ask others not to swear around my kids. My son is fast to pick up those oh so colorful words and I don't wish to be in the principals office every other day explaining why he talks like a sailor.

I swear because sometimes saying "darn" just doesn't quite convey the gravity of what I'm saying.
I don't care if other people swear, so long as they swear well. Someone people just can't do it.

I swear, but only when I find it necessary to add value to what I'm saying. For instance, "aw man, I can't believe they did that!" doesn't quite equal "Holy shit! Why the **** did they do that?"

Yeah, I swear...but I try not to so much around my kids. Ugh. And no, swearing doesn't bother me unless it's someone doing it in front of others who don't like it, like my grandparents. And public swearing is obnoxious as well.

I guess it's true about sailors..my son is in the navy..his wife has been coming over everyday to email him and she's been using the F word like nobody's business..She 's been trying to get pregnant and found out she isn't..I understand the dissapointment and I'm not that hung up on words, but I thought maybe my son had corrupted her or something:) She's such a sweet delicate thing..but then that's what they used to say about me..

I used to have a fairly foul mouth. I don't use the obscene of obscene 'c' duo of genitals, just because I don't like how they sound.
No certain word will offend me, but the use thereof (and usually common use) can sometimes be offensive.
I don't swear so much these days because I'm trying to elevate my vocabulary, and tend to consider 'swear' words what people use when they can think of nothing else to say.
To quote an hobbit, "confusticate and bebother" those who get offended by swearing. They're just looking for something to be offended by, or were raised to believe some words are bad.
Personally, I don't see how calling my bum an ass is any different in calling it a bum. It's just a word.
I do think it should not be used as publically as some use it, as it does offend people, and that's just rude.

Do you swear? Why do you swear? Does swearing bother you? Why does it bother you?
I hardly ever use vulgarity, although I have no special aversion
to it. I've taught my daughter, from very early on, that there
are no "bad" words, only bad usage. I may pepper my speech
occasionally, to stress a point, or in jest, but I feel using
vugarity in place of more specifically appropriate words can severely
cripple a person's ability to articulate themselves effectively.
Words are the crystalization of ideas- a gap in your vocabulary
is a very real gap in your knowledge.

One thing I cannot tolerate, however, is the casual use of "damn"
when addressed to a deity. If people realized how much power their
words have, they would never nonchalantly invoke divine condemnation.

No I don't ^$&$ing swear, that's @&$#ing stupid!
Ya'll should stop %^&#ing cursing, it's bad and ^#*& :p
lol, nah I ain't THAT bad, too me they're words, expressive words, that can get a point across...
I remember one time, I had a friend in a band, only ONE of their songs had a curse word in it, I asked him why:
"Well, because "You can't stop me" didn't have the same passion as "You can't ****ing stop me" in the song"
So sometimes, even one simple word can change the entire feel of the sentence, which is needed at times ;)

Do I swear? Yes, but rarely. In fact, I don't think that I know anyone who can recall me swearing at all. It's not because swear words are "bad", but because I think it lacks imagination. People curse so often that they leave themselves without any way to make a real impact when it counts!
Anyway, "You F@#!**g moron", is so much less impressive than "
Thou crusty botch of nature! "
Don't you think?
Heh, heh,....actually, I got that off a shakespearan insult generator. I thought it was funny. As was this line....

I swear a lot, especially among the people I work closely with. I went off on a rant a few weeks ago and my boss commented that it was the first time in 2 years that he had ever heard me swear. The guys I work with were crying laughing because even though i'm the only girl there I am the most foul mouthed of all of us.
I never swear if I am around children. I also hate hearing very small children swear, it just sounds so wrong.

I swear if it is not around anyone like a teacher or my parents or older family members. My mom freaks out and slaps me if I swear in front of her (this is the ONLY thing she has ever slapped me for). She doesn't even like me to say 'oh, that sucks' because of what it refers to... So that kinda sucks, lol.
:tongueout LOL I wouldn't feel comfortable cursing in front of my parents, but they wouldn't mind...as much as they curse.

I swear a lot. But never in front of kids and never out loud in a public place because if I hear it in the street I cringe, and my daughter is usually with me.

Do you swear?
Yes, if it fits the situation, the company, and my feelings.
Why do you swear?
Variety and emphasis. Because using polite euphamisms like "oh sugar" and "heck" and so on is just lame (although I do love the Dilbert character, prince of heck).
Does swearing bother you? Why does it bother you?
Yes, if its done badly or inappropriately, or if someone uses it as an alternative to developing a vocabulary, or (and this one really bothers me) when someone uses it as every other word, all the time (chronic communication difficulty and repressed anger).
All kids start swearing as soon as they discover what an instant reaction it produces in adults. They don't understand the words but they appreciate the effect. When my kids started to swear I checked my first instinct to say "don't do that" and instead asked "do you think that was appropriate to the situation"? If the answer was yes (which it frequently wasn't, when they were young) then, fine. I also think that not rising to the bait and not getting all upset makes young kids get over the novelty value quicker.

Do you swear? Why do you swear? Does swearing bother you? Why does it bother you?
I do! Why? Because I am an old country farmboy who was raised as such I think. I only swear in front of those that I know and I know are comfortable with it. I was also taught to be respectful and never swear in font of my elders or in front of folks I dont know.

I swear, and swearing doesn't bother me.
I've always agreed with George Carlin that there are "no bad words." There are bad thoughts, bad intentions...not bad words. So, if I'm having a bad day and I forgot something important and I say, "Aw, sh-- !"...well, that's really no harm, no foul. And sometimes there's really nothing like a good F-you in a...erm...spousal debate. ;) (We usually end up laughing about it later, anyhow.) I got my swearing habit from my mom, who is the Princess of Colorful Language. It's not like any of us swear constantly (I mean, we're not doing a female remake of the Lethal Weapon movies, or anything), but we're not fazed by it, either.
One thing that happened recently really did tick me off, though. I took my kids to Venetian Night here in our hometown. (If you're not familiar with what a Venetian Night is, it's where people decorate boats with lights and have a boat parade.) One of the boats, a big pontoon, had a live high school band on it. The theme of the parade this year was The Wizard of Oz, so they started off singing a rock version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow...okay, cool. But when they finished that song, and just as they were passing by a whole bunch of wide-eyed kids, they broke into some alt rock song laced with f-bombs and other explatives. Charming. THAT annoyed me. I mean, this event was a family thing and I would've liked to have known in advance that it was going to be rated R. :G :grrrrr:

Oh, that's not exactly true. I swear a blue streak when I feel like it, but I have many many more tricks up my sleeve. :p My beloved always says that in a verbal altercation I'm deadly. (Not that I'm proud of it, but it IS a skill, I suppose.) I have a stellar vocabulary, and I'm not afraid to use it.

I use swear words as commonly as I say "the" and "I" it doesn't bother me hearing them either. If people really don't want me to swear, I'll make an effort to try reeeeeallly hard not too. I don't see what the moral issue is, if anybody knows what the moral issue against swearing is, can you please enlighten me cause I'd really like to know just for my own curiosity. To me a swear word is like any other, just another way to express yourself. There is one word I refuse to use because it is such an ugly and hateful word. Its the only one that willl not ever pass through my lips. But other then that.... :whatgives I started when I was twelve years old, because I wanted to shock people, and because I thought it made me cool and for some reason more grown up I guess because it was taboo with the kids but the adults could say it.

The one thing my bestest buddy in the whole wide world and I can't see eye to eye on is swearing.
I truely, honestly don't see the difference between saying "I've had a sh***y" day and saying "I've had a crappy day." Both words mean the same damn thing. Sometimes I'll say one, sometimes I'll say the other, sometimes I'll say some random made up word...
Since he has a major problem with this, I try to cut back, but it's hard. It's like telling your kids they aren't allowed to watch seseme street anymore if they start counting in Spanish. It's completely stupid to be offended by something so meaningless.

I only swear when I'm extremely angry or when I'm playing around with my husband and we're alone. I do say little things like dammit when I'm goofing off or trying to make a point in a comical way. I NEVER swear in front of my children, and I find it offensive when I have to hear someone else do it in my presence or when my children are near.
Let's face it....they may just be "other words"....but the general public finds it offensive when a group of teenagers are in a public place swearing like its an olympic event. It seems there are alot more creative ways to use the english language without having to resort to swear words :whatgives: I've always associated alot of swearing with teens going for the shock factor, or uneducated adults.....However, my husband does it (when the kids aren't around) because he simply enjoys the way certain words and phrases sound.

I know, I find it offensive too. Especially those who say thinks like "f*ck Jesus," I mean I get irritated when people say NORMAL cussowords but when they go that far..... You see me getting an outburst.
My 5-year-old cousin said "shit" last year... She's a very well raised little girl who loves the colors pink and purple, and teddybears and hearts and stuff... She learned it from her 7-year-old brother, you'd have guessed... It really made me irritated, not about the word itself, but she KNOWS you're not supposed to say that, and she still does. Next time it'll be "f*ck" and I do NOT want any cousins or nieces of mine saying those things!!! My dad, brothers & cousins taught me to say HORRIBLE things in Turkish when I was little and I just find it really inappropriate.

I only swear when I'm goofing off (for comedic effect, yanno? and it usually succeeds...NO ONE expects me to use a swear word, since I so rarely use 'em!) or when I injure myself/am really angry. ^^;; My favorite explicatives tend to be European ones. :P
OH! Or when I'm writing a story. Some of my characters use colorful language such as *I* would never use personally, but, ah, if I'm writing it...I guess it could count in a way! XD
But, yeah. Swear words don't bother me in general. The only time they DO bother me is when they're used in excess, like every other word. Yeesh! Find another adjective, people!

I only swear when I'm goofing off (for comedic effect, yanno? and it usually succeeds...NO ONE expects me to use a swear word, since I so rarely use 'em!) or when I injure myself/am really angry. ^^;; My favorite explicatives tend to be European ones. :P
European ones?? :nyah: What's that supposed to mean?

I swear. I don't know when I started. I grew up on the street and it just became my language. I don't swear in certain company so as not to offend anyone but in other company it's common. The words seem to add emphasis to statements. Like when I was in a band last year, there was constant arguing so rather than say "Could you please play the song the way we wrote it?" you'd be more likely to hear "Just play the (multiple expletives deleted) song the way we (more deletions) wrote it!" It just seems more appropriate to swear for some things. But I believe certain words are only acceptable in certain company.

"Um... Spock, about those 'colorful metaphors',..."
"They are not the hell your whales!"
God. And I just realized that I really don't remember where we parked....
Sorry, couldn't help it. It's my favorite of the Star Trek movies. :p

Do you swear? Why do you swear? When did you start? Is there anything you won't say?Does swearing bother you? Why does it bother you?
depends on the company at the time. if i'm around my friends or family, i swear a blue streak. in public i don't unless adequately provoked. i'm always afraid of forgetting myself around prissy or important people and spouting off but i don't usually slip.
about the only things i won't say/don't like to hear are vulgar sexual references. nicknames for body parts, sexual acts, etc... just bothers me when guys always have to talk about that crap. my dad talks like that all the time. he has no respect for women unless in their presence at the time. disgusting...
i have no idea how i started. i figure it must've been learned from kids in school. my parents and relatives are for the most part very yuppie respectable types and none of them curse much. i can't remember specificaly learning any of the curse words. i must have just picked them up along the way.

I personally don't have anything against it, but I find anyone that overuses such phrases in their everyday language just come off as seeming less intelligent and less influential on anything pertaining to that moment. Because of this I try my hardest to stay aware of what I say and try and keep those words out of my vocabulary. However, when things get rough and I get really angry or upset I curse up a storm and I scare everyone around me, and of course I'm taken much more seriously than someone who would swear on a daily basis.

I've been known to swear on occasion. Normally I try to keep it to a minimum, just because for me it shows a lack of intelligence and education, plus, in most cases, it just seems like if all you can think of doing is letting go with a couple curses, maybe you really don't have anything to say and its best to keep your mouth shut.
