View Full Version : Considering....

I'm trying to decide if I should get a puppy or not. You see, my neighbor's dog (rottie) had puppies a week ago. They're most likely mutts -- they were trying to breed her with another rottie, but she ran away and "got it on" with a mutt.
Anyway....these puppies are SOOOO cute, (of course). There's two boys and one girl, and the one boy has the rottie coloring, only lighter brown and a white spot on his chest. If I decide I want one then I get first pick, and I'll take that one.
I already have a dog and a cat, and I live in a duplex, (granted I have a good sized yard), but I'm seriously considering getting the puppy. He'll probably be huge....and double my dog food budget...
Sigh.... ARG!! It's hard to make a rational decision about something like this. Free, cute, loveable, ball of fur. I just don't know....

if i were in your situation, i would totally cave. btw- mutts are healthier then single-breed dogs :)

Yeah....in my experinece mutts are better tempered as well... Anyway.... I soooo want to cave on this one.
Everyone around me keeps telling me "be rational about this" They either remind that I already have a dog (and cat), that he'll be huge (the mutt was most likely part wolf), that it'll be more of a chore to look after two dogs, it'll be more expensive, it'll be more difficult to go anywhere, that I dont' have the time to raise a puppy.....
<whine> I don't wanna be rational!! <pout>
All I can think of is, he's soo cute, and I'm already falling in love with him....how am I going to be after 6 more weeks of watching him grow up? I'm even already trying to come up with a name for him.
That's why being rational is so hard. Do you think being rational is better than being in love? :)

Hm tough choice! I have a dog and 2 cats, our dog is a lhasa poo. I really wanted a doberman, german shepherd, or especially rottie, but they're just too big for my apartment. Which is why I never go near puppies anymore :D. I think I'd be in trouble even if I brought home another cat ;)
(on the other note, mutts are not always healthier then purebred dogs. It often depends on the breeder. Some unscrupulous breeders of the past would breed dogs of the same line (ie. father and daughter, brothers and sisters, etc.) to propagate favourable characteristics, which resulted in some genetic defects cropping up (as you know family members often carry similar genes, and therefore genes that could cause problems were often put together). Some breeds are prone to problems because of their shape etc. - for example, german shepherds are often found with hip problems, while shar pei's are usually found with eyelids that need to be tacked.. but it is possible for breeders to be more selective and avoid these problems.. which is why you'll often see certain breeds in the paper with "hips guaranteed"... ok that was my tidbit of useless information for the night)

as long as your looking out for the dog, making sure that if you get it you'll be able to take good care of it, everything will work out fine :)
