I had a plant/tree growing out of the back of my house, and I'm curious as to what it is...The leaves are *huge* and heart-shaped, bigger than my head, and there seem to be no branches from the stem, which is woody at the base and kind-of juicy nearer the top. I'm curious because my mom swears it's a sunflower because of the size, but I'm not too sure.

hmmm, well, I am not so sure it is sunflower, wish you had a picture of it, that would help, but I'll see what I can find out anyway. :)

What color are the leaves and the stalk? Could be "poke" (polk).

if it has a red stalk, it could be japanese knotweed.
or, if you got lucky, it may be a catalpa. I don't know at what age they begin to bloom, but they have these beautiful white and purple speckled trumpet like flowers.

I DON'T THINK IT'S A SUNFLOWER, THOUGH I COULD VERY EASILY BE WRONG. I'M NOT SURE IF THEY HAVE HEART-SHAPED LEAVES. BUT I'M SURE THAT ONCE IT BLOOMS, YOU'LL KNOW WHETHER OR NOT IT IS.

Armitage, did you ever find out what that plant/tree was? If you're still searching, you can take a leaf to a local nursery or plant store & ask them. Or if you can post a pic here?
