HINDU Kailashgiri Brahmachari takes his blind mother everywhere - in a basket on his back. The saffron-robed holy man has been on a 3750-mile, all-India pilgrimage for eight years. He hopes to complete it by 2013.

He undertook the huge trek to fulfil Kethakdevi's lifelong wish to pray at all of India's holiest places. He carries a wooden bar on his shoulders, balancing two baskets. In one is his mum, in the other their belongings.

Kailashgiri, of Piparia, near Jabalpur, said: 'It does ache but my message is simple. Take care of your parents. If you don't, your children will also neglect you.'

But Kethakdevi, 60, has regrets. She said: 'He is a nice son but I'm tired. Sometimes I feel like going back home.'
