Do you mean a totem pole? Because otherwise Im a bit confused myself. A totem animal is, as far as Ive been aware of, an spirit of an animal that whatches over you, reflects your personality, and gives you strength. Often times a "vision quest" would be undertaken to determine your totem, or the local shaman would consult the spirits to find it out.
If your talking about the totem pole, do you mean the attributes associated with a particular animal or just what is that carving supposed to be? These vary from tribe to tribe of course...
Please clarify your question for me.

Apologies Grey. I didn't realize I'd been so vague. Oops!

I was referring to the totem animal. The reflection of my personality and the being that has willingly chosen to guide me and lend it's voice and strength. I figured out what mine was, and I wanted to know what it stood for. *smile*

The books Animal Speak and Animal Wise by Ted Andrews are pretty good. Or you could ask the animal spirit itself.
