View Full Version : Announcing Post Counts

SacredWithin

Honestly, I don't care. So what, some of us tend to talk more than others, big whoop-dee-doo! Some of those who posted are probably like "". I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think those threads are quite pointless. It's not like we're getting medals for that. Anyways, I wanted to know if anyone felt the same way. Before, I'd pay no attention to it, but there is always a new one the next day....

...In fact, why the hell am I making this post, I don't even read those things!

Oh well, I'm sleepy. Probably a little cranky and need a nap. *sigh*

I dont mind them. Peopel are proud about how much they contribute to the site:) nothing wrong with that imo.

I like them. People like to think they have grown or been around the site longer with the larger there post count. I dont think it does any harm. Like the birthay threads. There just there to spread some joy.:flowers:

I suppose I really don't care. Given half a chance I'd talk anyone's ear off I could! *shrugs* but a nap sounds good

I'm all for them. It's good for people to take pride in such things, it's important to them to feel they are a part of a community. :fpartyman

I talk. A lot. Usually about nothing in particular, because I do most of my posting from a very slow, often boring job.

But post count posts? Eh. Don't care either wy. I've been known to post my own in fits of delerious boredom. But they are, by nature .. rather silly.

If the post count threads annoy you....don't read them. Some of us have rather large post counts and we like to acknowledge their milestones, and we like to acknowledge others as their counts grow...If there's a particular thread you are following and it goes to the second page, all you have to do is "bump"........

Working hard, playing hard...mad at this darn Hurricane....seems all those feeder bands are petering out right as they hit Augusta....I actually have the sprinklers on!!! And the doors and windows open letting all that fresh air ( read strong winds) blow thru the house...Whatcha been doing?

I apologzie if I annoyed anyone with my post announcement down below. I assume I'm the one that pushed it over the edge, since mine is the most recent. It wasn't intended to do harm. I just feel more at home here now, like everyone's getting to recognize me a little more, and I'm becoming part of the family. Sorry guys. :excuseme:

In fact, I'll have to wait till this post to even go look to see how many I have.
I don't pay it much attention, unless someone calls me a big mouth.

To be honest I don't really care, I find it a little silly when people are posting that they've made it to 100 or 200 posts *shrugs* I've been a member of another forum where there were set "milestones" because of the sheer number of post count posts.

I guess it also depends on the day, I mean there are days when there are so many threads about post counts and other less important things that the threads about actual stuff are on the second page.

I find it an annoying waste of bandwidth to put up a post count thread. I mean, whoopdedoo. I'm just bitchy that way. :) But I feel that a better alternative is to have a list of every member on MW, listing who posts the most. It would help weed out the ones who make an account here, and don't post for like, 2 years. It will also show you how often you have posted, and how often your buddies have posted, etc.

Honestly... I don't care. If you want to celebrate a milestone, go right ahead. Some days I don't feel like reading them, other days, I'll congradulate people. Are they a waste of space? Sure. But I can point out a lot of stuff that is.

:whatgives I just don't care.

The one reason I can image for not being nice about people celebrating their milestones is that the less posting people get jealous. I hate popularity contests (even though yes, I like attention). And having a list with post counts will make little difference: some will continue to perceive it as a popularity contest.

Now this negativity from people like you and Bellegreen about the Birthday threads is why I no longer do them ... too much b!tching from the bad apple spoils it for the good ones ... I just wish people could keep an open mind and learn to read the header intro's 1st and if it does not suit don't bloody click on it to read but at the same don't flame it either as you have not right to spread negativity like that ... not only have I taken my B-day wishes in private now ... there are now 2 people that will not be getting one from me ... you do not like me happy happy joy joy attitude ... that is fine ... I will no longer share my precious post thread milestones or any other for that matter from MW along with my B-day greeting .... it is painfully obvious it is too much for you to handle .....

I chose other. Here's why:

I'm not saying I've seen it here, but I have on other boards. When you have a higher post count, people seem to respect you more. When someone asks a question, two people give the same exact answer, the one with the higher post count is the one usually getting the credit.

I find post count to be a good thing too, gives you a feeling of how much you contribute (as a few have already stated).

So, its a love/hate thing for me.

If we were to exclude all the threads/posts that are not 'important,' MW wouldn't be half so big as it is now (1,159,980 posts as of this post). And like others have said, if you don't like to read them, you don't have to - you can see by either the subject line or holding your mouse over the thread title what the poster's saying.

There are a lot of so-called 'important' threads that I have no use for, but you don't see me telling people they're a waste of space. :goodgrief

And on that note, I'm off to make a thread about my posting milestone (2K). :bigredgri

P.S. Wynnjera, I liked your b-day threads - I'm sorry a few grinches spoiled it for you. :rubhead:

A simple post-count doesn't influence me much one way or the other. It's the content of a person's posts, not how many they have made, that makes a real difference to me.

Seriously... I liked the birthday posts too! I agree with what Avy said. You don't have to click on them and read them if you don't like them. Same with the milestones.

And did you all know that (in IE anyway) if you hover the cursor over the post name, you can preview what's inside the post? You don't even have to click on the post if you don't like what the preview says!

As Mol said, you don't like them, don't read them. Just skip over until you find what you are looking for. This post is a waste of both my time and yours. I'm sorry in advance that I wrote it. I'm sorry that I obtained government funding to write it too, because it just wasted the dollars of every hard-working taxpayer in the U.S. of A. I'm sorry to my parents, who have to be wondering why their son turned into a time-aholic. Where did they go wrong?

No offense to Taureans in here, but did everyone just turn into a Taurus? Does every single thing have to serve a purpose and be in neat little rows (throw in the touch of Virgo)?

Let's just lighten up and have fun... stop taking these posts so seriously! Some things will inform. Some things will entertain. Some things will bring smiles, and some will bring tears. It's the way of the world, and it's the way things are here. We're a microcosm of the larger community, so things aren't going to be perfect.

Someone posted a poll asking for people's opinions about post-count threads and people posted their opinions. Whether those posting their opinions were 'pissy' seems to depend on your perspective. From my perspective far more folks were 'defensive'. I don't think this issue is worth getting that upset over.
