I have no clue what the wands are used for. I read somewhere a while back that some use them for mixing around whatever is cooking in a cauldron. I really doubt thats true since alot of wands have those pretty crystals at the end. Sorry I wasn't much help lol

A wand is for invoking, whereas an athame is for evoking. So in Wiccan ritual you use the athame to cast the circle around you, and you use the wand to call things into the circle/you, like the guardians, the gods etc. Technically invoking is calling something into yourself, but my teachers used it to mean into a circle as well.
Some people don't use a wand at all, just the athame for all purposes. Or vice versa, so the wand becomes like an athame as well.
Then you get all different kinds of wands - double ended, "phallic" etc. Double ended wands are usually used to channel feminine or masculine energies, or solar/lunar. One half is painted black, the other white.
The more phallic wands can be used for more overtly masculine energies (they're like a normal wand, but with a kind of acorn shape carved at the top, representing...*ahem*...you know what...).

or then you have the gaelic silver branch, which is a symbol of office for the highest honored poets.

Those are it's uses in Wicca... but not all witchcraft traditons use it in that way. I use my wand to cast my circle and to invoke entities. I also use it to channel energies. It's a simple wooden, crystal-tipped wand, but it's very effective.
A wand should be used (or not used) in the way that seems right to you. I simply use it as a consecrated energy tool, dedicated to the element of fire. It helps me direct energies wherever I want them to go.

It aids in directing energy working much like a pointing finger.

Indeed. A focus point for which to direct energy can be most helpful in any sort of energy work. Commonly, you will see people use wands for spells and the like, but I believe that many objects can attain the same goal.

Yes, sorry. The Wiccan bit was meant to apply to the first paragraph only; I did point out that not everybody uses it as such, but I guess I wasn't clear... Definite lack of :caffeine: today.
I've never used a wand, unless a five inch double terminated crystal counts.

Most crystal wands around, or wands tipped with crystals are usually used for healing purposes, or so is usually the case.
