Here's another lovely example of parenting in our society. Also how great the legal system is at protecting these at risk children.
CINCINNATI (AP) - An 8-year-old girl was beaten to death by her 11-year-old brother and 13-year-old cousin, who was also accused of raping her, police said.
Prosecutors said the 13-year-old was baby-sitting the victim, Takeya Bryant, and her 9-year-old sister and 5-year-old brother when the attack occurred Wednesday.
The boys were arrested Thursday and appeared in court Friday, where they were ordered to undergo psychiatric testing.
"You get to the point in this job where you think you can't be shocked," prosecutor Michael Allen said. "But with something like this, if you're not shocked, there's something wrong with you."
The boys' attorney, Terry Weber, said he will ask that separate lawyers be appointed for the boys because they may be called to testify against one another.
Under Ohio law, because the boys are not 14 years old, they cannot be tried as adults and would face a maximum penalty of juvenile detention until age 21. The boys entered no plea on Friday and made no other comment.
Police said the children's mother, African Evans, 29, was at work at the time of the attack.
The four children had been taken from her custody after she was convicted of child endangerment in December for leaving them unsupervised, police and county officials said.
The courts placed the children with a grandmother, police Capt. Vince Demasi said, but the grandmother, at some point, returned the children to the mother without authorization.
