View Full Version : Should the banners be relevent to the season?

It was just a thought on my part...
Do you think that banners should be relevent to the season you are voting in?
I mean... For example, a picture of Harry Potter would be really cool, especially well done. But would it pertain to Beltane? Or a big, flashy pentacle with starbursts and light perspectives would look awesome... but is it really good for fall? Shading, lighting, and origionality are really cool. But what about relevance?
Just my little question for you. :)
Example of my own opinion: All the banners were really pretty. But I feel that for a generic autumn banner, some of the more "natural" ones might've been better, while the current winner (while very well done) would be much more fun and appropriate for Samhain/Halloween.
Your thoughts?
And AuroraSilvermist , hon- I'm not trying to insult you, or make you feel bad, or generally do anything negative toward you- this is something I've been thinking about for some time. Please don't feel like I'm attacking you... :hugz: you did a really wonderful job on your banner.

I angsted over this because I liked the autumnal banners but, of course, MW being international and all, its coming up to the Autumn equinox in the Northern hemisphere but for folks in the Southern hemisphrere its coming up to the Spring equinox...
I ended up voting for some autumnal banners anyway.

That's what I kept thinking about when I made my banner this month. I love Autumn more than any other season, and I toyed with the idea of making a glowy, orange and crimson and gold harvest-time sort of banner. In fact, that's what I wanted to make, but I figured it wouldn't be apropos to everyone. Then again, I voted for VroomBroom's fall banner, anyhow.
Maybe the better question would be whether the people in the southern hemisphere mind seasonal banners that don't pertain to them. I'm willing to bet a lot of them don't care, because they know MW is based in the Northern hemisphere. :whatgives

I think making the banners seasonal is a great idea - in touch with the wheel of the year. As long as the southerners don't mind, I think they should be seasonal.

Coming from the person who made last header ... I always make my headers to suit the wheel of the year ... and I am aware that some members are left out due to the change in the seasons ... and I am really sorry for that .... but it is what really helps inspire me .... thinking of the seaon that I am in ... but I guess I could just make a general banner as well ... I guess I am a fence sitter ... never thought how our neighbors felt ... Sorry guys :hearthear

Yep, I'm like WynnJera, it's the seasons that inspire me too. As for the season's being different for different areas... I don't mind it either if it's winter here, and I log on to a site in New Zealand or Australia for example and feal the warmth of the summer time on that site...it's a nice feeling for me..makes me feel more intouch with them as well ;)

I think banners should represent the people or whom they are made. I mean in summertime or spring if I had a banner in those colours, as much as I love the seasons, it would in no way represent me. And I may be along an entirely strange path but banners like avaters should represent the person rather than the seasons.

Going with that thought, then the banners for Mystic Wicks should then represent this forum.. but with so much diversity, it makes it very difficult to really pinpoint one single characteristic of a forum this big... hmmm...

The thread was about the forum banner, not personal banners. Or, do you feel the same way about the forum banner? :)

Quite frankly I don't care. I just pick the one that looks the prettiest, is most fun or just calls out to me. Season, holiday, weather don't make a bit of difference.

So did I  I loved how it really represented fall and the harvest. :farmerjoe
Ack- Yes, to clarify, I am talking about the Forum header/banner. Not personal banners.

Truthfully... I think we should find a way to rotate the header banners. I dunno. Somehow place thumbnails of all submitted starting from a certain date on one page or something. The one that gets the most clicks say in January, becomes Februarys banner. And then it gets retired.
In my scenerio, there would be no monthly contest... and no deadlines. For the artists who make the banners, there could just be a thread to submit to when you have one to submit., and then it gets added to the one big banner page. Then it has as much chance as any as getting used, instead of submitted just one time.
I look at all the submissions that we just had and have had in the past. I look at how beautiful they all were. And I look at how much time each artist took to create something they felt worthy of being judged. And then I look at the fact that only one of them will get to be viewed over the period of a month. Kinda makes me sad at all that wonderful effort gone to waste for many people.
I wish there was just a way to let everyone's get a chance to be seen. Just how I feel :)

ohh...now that would be cool! Sort of like how all the quotes rotate through during clicks..
hmm... neat thought Linx!

I like to think so, but then it's just opinion. True, this is an international community, but it would be interesting to see how many members live in the northern hemisphere and how many in the southern. I don't think you can ever have anything that totally fits every member.

Are you volunteering to take charge of that? mol and Semele do their best, but they have day jobs and probably a score of other administrative tasks that take precedence.
Also, anything involving Harry Potter or someone else's art would be a violation of copyright, so that'd be right out.

Hmm, what would be involved? I'd be perfectly happy to help out, I know they have so much to do.
What would need to be done? Check each banner to see if it's relatively "autumn-ish" or "winter-ish" when they are entered?
What else could I help out with on the site?

Wow, those are really pretty, WynnJera! :) I especially like the transparent one...such a pretty scene.
As for rotating banners every month, how would that work? I know I sound totally ignorant here, but...I'm not entirely sure I know what you mean by "rotating." I love the idea of having a huge banner archive, though, containing all the banner submissions. That would be wonderful!

there's a few ways you can do it.. the most common way though, or at least the one I'm familiar with is through a simple java script. You just link the banners in with the java code and everytime your refresh the page a new image appears.

But then...wouldn't the background colors be mismatched?
Charise

yep... you'd have to have a fairly nuetral background setting I suppose. I guess it would be alot like viewing the forum in the monochrome settings.

I think that the biggest problem with 'rotating banners' would be that they have to store every single image on their server, which takes up SO much space. Rotating them would probably use up more bandwidth and space than just one banner is currently taking up now.
