I currently have been growing Parsley, oregano, basil and was wondering can these plants continue through the cold weather in Fall/Winter? They are currently kept outside in window boxes. Would appreciate any input. Thanks! :D

Yes you can! Some you can even bring inside to grow. I always grow a small pot of basil. oregano & parsley indoors over the winter. What kind of winter do you get? Usually, if the window boxes are sheltered, the oregano & parsley should be ok. Basil would probably do better indoors. You will find that the basil will start to flower around now. You can cut off the flowers to encourage new leaf growth but eventually, nature will take its course. In the next few weeks, you might want to start new basil seeds for your fall use.

Thanks WildChild!

Winters here in Connecticut are in the 30's. I was wondering if they would do well inside the house close to a window.

Hi all!
My basil is flowering.I have some in a pot and some in the garden.
I've grown basil and parsley indoors during the winter. They seemed to do all right by a window. But,if it gets really cold, where wind chills are below zero, you might want to move it more into a room.If the glass gets really cold, they don't like it.
It sure seems to make the food taste better when you get fresh herbs in the winter!!

I too was wondering about my little herbs this winter as they are all sat very happily on my window ledge and I can feel autmn just around the corner. Ill try them by the window inside and see how they do :)
Thanks and lets hope our herbs continue to grow and bring lots of inspiration this Autumn and Winter for all our recipes!

They should do quite well on a window ledge if it's a sunny window. Unless there's a heater beneath the window. Don't forget to feed it...not as often as the summer but just a bit every so often. I'm doing up some pots of herbs to get ready for bringing my herbs in.

I'M SURE THAT IT WOULD BE PERFECTLY FINE TO BRING THE HERBS INSIDE TO GROW, PRVIDED A PET DOESN'T KNOCK THEM OVER TOO MUCH. I THINK THAT IT'S MUVH BETTER THAN GROWING THEM OUTSIDE, ESPECIALLY IN THE WINTER. I LIVE IN MICHIGAN, WHERE THE WINTERS CAN GET DOWN TO, LIKE,20 BELOW, SO I UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERN.

Hi all!
Actually,my herbs are in a window on the north side of my home. It's a big window though. They rarely,if ever, get direct sunlight.Somehow they do fine.
