Hi - I was just looking at the other tarot deck poll and there were so many "other"s and I'm such a visual person that it would be really nice to see where all of the others fall.

So here I have used all 30 spots to post different decks that seemed to be mentioned a lot on the other thread, and also based on what Aeclectic Tarot said are the Top Ten decks this year and last.

Ok! So please vote, but if you don't want to re-hash your reasoning again I won't be offended if you don't want to explain too.

Thanks! :loveduv:

My favourite deck is the Hallowe'en tarot, which is a clone of the Rider-Waite. I find it really fun and upbeat, plus I've always felt really strongly towards Hallwe'en/Samhain ever since I can remember so it speaks to me on a deeper level as well, and even though it is fun it also has some great symbolism contained in it.

lol So basically you guys are telling me I shouldn't have tried to make another poll out of this, heehee. Everyone likes something different! I think that's really neat though, both because that means there are a lot of really great decks out there, and because everyone has found something that really clicks with them!

:fpartyman Thanks for putting up with my attempt at re-categorization anyway!!!

I *love* my Tarot of Prague! It's so beautiful, and fun.. I use it for myself, sometimes, but since both of my other decks are rather dark, and not good for using for others, I use my ToP because it looks 'friendly' and has easy storytelling pictures. I'd suggest going to check it out

Tarot of Prague Website (http://www.tarotofprague.com)

(I also voted for 'other dark because my Gothic Tarot of Vampires has decided it wants to be the only deck I use for personal readings, and it's startling how accurate they are sometimes. Funny cards, they are :seehearsp )

I have many favorite decks, among my collection of twenty decks. I love the others as well, but I'm still trying to connect with them and understand them, or they are just there for learning purposes, like my Thoth Tarot and Diamond Tarot (RWS). The ones I work with mainly are The Gothic Tarot by Vargo (http://www.monolithgraphics.com/pages/tarot.html), The Enchanted Tarot (Zerner-Farber) (http://www.learntarot.com/endesc.htm), The Golden Tarot (http://www.goldentarot.com/welcome.htm), The Light And Shadow Tarot (http://www.learntarot.com/lsdesc.htm) and The Fey Tarot (http://www.learntarot.com/fedesc.htm).

I am an eclectic person with eclectic tastes and my decks show it.

Maybe I'm fickle, but it really does depend a lot on my frame of mind. I still fall back on the Aquarian Tarot. I'm having really good luck with the Druids Tarot and the Tarot of the Animals--both fairly recent Lo Scarabeo decks..

Thoth, without a doubt.
the reason is it's seemingly bottomless depth. after ten years of intense study, i keep finding new stuff in this deck. therefore i see it as much more than a simple tarot deck, but more of a powerful magickal tool.

my second favorite is The Magickal Tarot, by Tony Willis and Anthony Clark. this is based on the Thoth system, and is very informative. not pretty, but very workable.

after these two i lose interest in tarot pretty fast, although my third choice would probably be another Thoth deck, the Haindl Tarot.

I just got the new "Pagan Tarot," and my first reading with it was dead on!

It is basically a person following a pagan or Wiccan path, and it is modern, to include cars and computers.

I am VERY picky about artwork, and this is one of the best decks I've seen! The children's faces and bodies need fine-tuning, but I can't say I draw them any better... The only deck I like better than this one is my tried and true Robin Wood. I love all those illustrations!

i really like the Phantasmagoric Theater Tarot. The cards are huge, but the pictures are so amusing, and i feel really comfortable with that deck. Of course, I have so many other decks, its hard to choose a favorite. My brother really likes the Winged Spirits deck, so if i teach him to read, it will be with that deck.

I voted for the Osho Zen tarot deck (I just love it!) and Other "dark" deck. The other is for the Fantastical tarot deck. Oooh so much fun. I'm hunting down the Gilded tarot right now too and would have voted for the Sacred Circle tarot but the cards are just too big for my little hands, sigh.

Namaste all,

i am using different decks for different occations; but my favourite and most often used one is the classical TAROT DE MARSEILLE

because I am using numerology within the readings too, I depend on finding decks, that match the classical tarot numerology: major arcana 8 / justice, 11 / strength).

Marseille Tarot also differs to lets say Raider White and most other modern tarots, in the numerological meaning of the minor arcana.

Of course I wanted a second, maybe less streight deck. But it wasnt easy finding one that matched the Marseille numerology. Finally I found one, the Witches Tarot by Fergus Hall. It worked well with me, despite some pictures being ALL different ( like 11/ Force is a circus-bodybuilder-looking man tearing a book in two!)
It took me years to discover, that this deck has been designed for a 007-movie: from the james bond/to live and let die.

Now I use this particular deck in readings, where other people would touch my cards. When I do readings, where I touch the cards exclusively, I still will take a Marseille reprint.

For meditation and inspiration, I have the Tarot Navigators to the Mystic Sea. But i dont use it as a devinatory tool.

If you also like the Marseille or Venice way of tarot, but want it less streight, try the Tarot of Wirth (Tarot De Wirth)

peace and serenity

CzechWoods
October 22nd, 2004, 09:33 AM
PS: forgot to say, I also ue a gem stone tarot by Helmut G. Hoffmann,
but those are divinatory cards.

Although the values are printed on the bottom of the cards, including their
numbers, I completely ignore this information.

One reason is, that -again - it follows the modern logic of Raider White numerology, (which I dont; I follow the classical Marseille Tarot numerology).
the
other reason is I cannot see a true correspondence between the values and stones given.

Despite this, I use them for regular readings, combining my stone knowledge/understanding with traditional tarot spreads.

works fine with me.

I personally like the Tarot of Ceremonial Magick ( a multi faceted deck with Encohian and Qabala references), Taort of the Sephiroth ( another Qabala insiped deck), Neferari's Tarot ( a beautifully gold embosed Eygptian insipered deck). I have several decks, but perhaps the one I communicate best with is the OSHO ZEN tarot deck. It's very colorful and inspired by asian imagery with buddhist influences. if I had to label it as light or dak, I'd say it's pretty light. however there is one card in the deck that when it comes up gives me the creeps...don;t know why..it's just a blank card as you can see here :

either way, I really love the deck, and it's been dead on with every reading I've don with it.

I use my beloved Robin Wood for myself (I love the court cards, and I'm completely infatuated with The Magician), but I also think the Tarot of Prague is beautiful and whimsical and I mainly use that one when I do long-distance readings for other people. They both stay home. My out-and-about deck is the Gilded, for when I'm doing quick, informal readings in public.

Ok, I voted for one that I do not yet own, quite - I am finally ordering it next month. It's the Ananda, & I am SOOO in love with the artwork that I KNOW it is going to be my favorite deck. There's something about its misty, serene surrealilty that appeals to me mightily.

http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/ananda/ (http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/ananda/)

This is the version in German, but it's at Tarot Garden in English, & I think it's actually easier to get a hold of the English than the German.

The artwork far surpasses most of what I see in Tarot; it is luminous & soft, & so well-integrated in its elements. It has some very modern, almost sci-fi touches to it here & there; this doesn't turn me off at all, even though I am a Medie-Ren freakazoid!! Its combination of delicacy & transparency with the hard, sharp edges of technology is really something to behold. As I said, it integrates so well that none of the sci-fi stuff impinges upon the surreality of it in any way. There is plenty of humanity & nature as well; it puts one in mind of the Gilded a bit, but has soft, gleaming colors as opposed to the strong jewel-tones of the Gilded. It almost looks a little like Italian Primitives in places, like the cities in the distance. Overall, one of the most stunning decks I've ever seen, & cheap at the price of $35!

I've changed decks as I've grown spiritually. I learned from the Thoth deck but never really felt connected with it. I had to have the Spiral tarot but it sucked for me, ended up giving it away. Motherpeace really resonates with me as well as Hanson-Roberts.

I just acquired the Goddess Tarot and connected immediately, even though I bought it used! I'll be using it for a long time, I think :tarotwitc

Flirt with my older Italian tarots, usually end up with the Neoclassical 1810...there's a website with free readings, interesting associative meanings (mainly Thothy/modern) at aleph-tarot.com.

Other top picks: Eden (non scenic pips, great surreal majors/courts), Harmonious (Walter Crane) , Celestial (Brian Clark/Kay Steventon) and Animals Divine.

I enjoy reading everyone's picks.

I got the mini version. It goes with me everyplace - now I want the full-sized one as well.

And Jodo's book leaves all the other Tarot books in the dust - it makes them all look infantile. The Jodo-Camoin deck and La Via Del Tarot are all I need.

Of couse I also love my non-Tarot decks! La Vera Sibilla, The Well Worn Path...ESPECIALLY The Well Worn Path....

The DruidCraft is my deck of choice for reading right now, although I also love and use the Thoth for spellwork.

My favorite deck is the Archeon Tarot, followed by Tarot Art Nouveau (Lo Scarobeo), Tarot de Paris (J. Philip Thomas; St. Martin's Press), and the Victoria Romantic Tarot.

For general readings, I usually stick to the Aarcheon. It speaks to me in ways no other deck has ever spoken.

I have the African Tarot by Marina Romito.

The cards are very cheerful, done in an almost childlike style, very colourful, but preserve the symbolism of each card well.

They are also roughly business card size, which is a personal preference, but I like them. (I was never a big Tarot-head, though!)

Here's one..

I like the druidcraft deck. The only thing is the cards are sorta large so it can take time getting used to handling them.

I can not believe this thread is 9 pages long and not a person here has mentioned the Ancient Egyptian Tarot by Clive Barrett. This deck is mostly based on Thoth (which is one of the best, imho), with some Rider-Waite symbolism throughout. This deck is also steeped well with Qaballah symbolism. (See the 5 of swords for a really good example of this).

I can't go into detail as to why I prefer this deck. Otherwise, these 'details' would be far longer than this thread. Suffice it to say the artwork is as true to history as humanly possible. The depictions of the Netjer on the trumps is outstanding. The minors are as well illustrated and just as deep as the artwork in the trumps.

I have looked at all of the Egyptian decks on the market. In my opinion, none come even close to the Ancient Egyptian deck, with many falling flat symbolically. For instance, Nefertari's Tarot, another Egyptian deck, shows the following on the aces;

Wands - Bull
Pentacles - Baboon
Swords - Hawk
Pentacles - Kephri

Excuse me but, why is a bull, a symbol of the earth, on the ace of Wands, which is the suit of fire? Why is a baboon, a form of Djehuty (Thoth) on the ace of pentacles, which is the suit of earth? If anything, Djehuty would be more appropriate to the air element rather than earth, particularly given Djehuty's attributes. I can somewhat grok a hawk, representative of Horus (a sky god) being on the ace of swords, the suit of Air, although Shu would be far more appropriate. But by what process of logic can Kephri, being a symbol of the rising sun, belong on the ace of pentacles? I could see Kephri on the ace of wands but not on the ace of pentacles. I have often found such ridiculous attributes in Egyptian tarot decks, which leads me to believe the authors and artists of such decks knew little to nothing of Egyptian myth or elemental attributes, or possibly had no clue how to bridge the two. That is not the case at all with the Ancient Egyptian deck by Barrett, which does not contain such mixed up attributes and symbolism on any card.

There is one very, very silly thing about this deck. Due to being out of print, the price has skyrocketed to $190 (http://www.amazon.com/Ancient-Egyptian-Tarot-Clive-Barret/dp/0007133219/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-3289590-1731104?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1179060283&sr=1-1). This is the only deck of which I have two copies. I would sell neither of them at that price, either.

Really? Cuz I've been thinking of buying a Kabbalah deck.

I was never sure of the accuracy of Nefertari or Ramses Tarot. I myself have Ibis Tarot. But I've always been fascinated by the Ancient Egyptian Tarot too. Wish I could get it, somehow, someday.

Forget Amazon prices, go here and buy a brand new deck signed by Clive himself for only 50 bucks! (http://www.mythographica.fsnet.co.uk/)

Mochiron Ni, I Voted for the Rider/Waite Deck.

That was a No Brainer since I took a Rider/Waite Deck to Touch It to the Slaughter Stone of The Stonehenge during the 2006 Summer Solstice Gathering.

It is now my Primary Sacred Deck!

I also have a Light and Shadow Deck and a Marseilles Deck.

I originally started Learning Tarot with my Light and Shadow Deck from October 2004 to June 2005. It was in June 2005 that I bought my Rider/Waite Deck as a Self Birthday Present and after that, I have not used my L&S Deck as much, although I do keep its Energies Charged Up by Preserving It on my Main Apartment Altar.

The Marseilles Tarot Deck is in French, and I do not Understand French. I have only used it about Three Times, and it sits in a Box somewhere Unused. Since I was a British Ships Carpenter at the Battle of Traffalgar in a Previous Life, I now have this Strange Aversion to anything French, so I do not use my Marseilles Deck.

This is the 1 that I REALLY want right now: http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/master/

I'm currently using this though:

I really like the Lego and this deck though http://us-p.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/Ursula-Vernon/wombathermit.jpg Unfortunately that's all that appealed to me here. Many of them are just too dark for my tastes.

My favorite deck and the one I use the most often is the Rohrig Tarot. I think the artwork is beautiful and different. The book has expanded meanings for all the major arcara cards, and is easy to read. Pictures of what the cards look like can be found here:

I just find this to be a unique and versitile deck.

Osho Zen, hands-down. I own some other decks besides that one, but I first learned to read the cards with Osho Zen. Right now, I can read really fast with that deck and I seem to grasp at the cards intuitively... I hardly need the booklet anymore and am getting better at discovering the links between the cards. I first liked it because of its colours and beautiful imagery, but I have come to appreciate the deck so much more since then. I found it to be a really easy deck to start out with and I prefer reading with that one still because of its insights and startling clarity.

I like my ogham sets, but they're nothing compared to the set that one of our Celtic Recons made. http://www.greenwisewoman.com/ogham/ by Skilly-Nilly. I really love them.

I have a few that I am fond of, but my main deck is the Art Deco deck by Meyers. It's a bit goofy here and there, but I love the bright jewel-tone colors and the High Priestess card in particular. I'm actually fond of most decks that have a good High Priestess, Death, and Queen of Wands. Those 3 cards make it or break it for me. If they are lousy I won't be able to get into the deck...

I really like the deck I bought myself at Christmas. It's called the wolf pack tarot and while it takes some getting use to, I find it to be very powerful and accurate. Plus it's not a "dark" deck, which is something that I can't get into. You can see it at www.robertpetro.com
