View Full Version : Virgo and Vulcan

I've been perusing the astrology lessons and working my way through my chart and a question sprang to mind. For those persons who are born under the sign of Virgo, what impact does the not so recent discovery of Vulcan have on how the sign is or should be interpreted?

I have quite a few planets in my 2nd house which happens to be Virgo, including Mercury. From what I've read it seems that Mercury's presence enhances the normal attributions of the sign. However, I'm still left wondering if Vulcan comes into the play at all.

I'm hoping someone can make sense of this. My chart has been included for your reference.

Thanks!

I know nothing of Vulcan - but my astrology program does tell you its position in your chart. It's either 1 Virgo or 5 Virgo (there are two different methods of calculating it, apparently). This is pretty close to your Sun and Mercury.

Incidentally, your Eros is at about the same place: 2Virgo47, and Psyche is at 13Leo11.

Are we talking Vulcan the asteroid, or did they find another planet and I missed it??

It's a hypothetical planet between the Sun and Mercury, and used in esoteric astrology. Some people give it rulership of Virgo - hence Bliss's question as she has a Virgo Sun.

It was postulated in the 18th century, because Mercury's orbit wasn't as regular as the maths said it should be - so they assumed a small planet might be altering the orbit of Mercury. However, when Einstein developed his theory of relativity, that provided a good explanation for Mercury's orbit, and there was no need for Vulcan any more.

Whether it physically exists as a planet is rather doubtful - but that's not to say that the calculated point may not have an effect. After all, we use the Moon's Nodes, and that's a point rather than a physical planet.

Because it's hypothetical, we don't have an accurate ephemeris for it; there are two basic ways of calculating its position - which give slightly different results.

I don't know of an asteroid called Vulcan, although there is a "transneptunian" or "Uranian" called Vulcanus. These are also hypothetical planets with much longer orbits (though as an interesting aside, I've noticed that two of these transneptunians, postulated long before the discovery of Pluto, do seem to correspond fairly closely with the positions of Pluto and Sedna - so maybe there is something in it!).

Fluff...

The extra feedback on Vulcan is helpful. I wasn't certain why the supposed discovery was creating such a stir.

You mentioned esoteric astrology... can you explain a bit more about what this is? I realize there are a number of systems. It seems a little odd that this is the only branch that is working with Vulcan so to speak.

*hope that made sense* *l*

I know very little about esoteric astrology - it was used (developed?) by Alice Bailey and Djwhal Kuhl, whom she channelled. You may have heard of the "seven rays" - this is a term used in esoteric astrology.

There's a good overview here: http://beaskund.helloyou.ws/netnews/bk/astrology/toc.html which can tell you far more about it than I can! :)

I think Alan Oken delves into the esoteric end at times... His columns in Dell Horoscope sometimes mention the rays. I've been wanting to read his book "Soul Purpose Astrology" but apparently it's out of print...

Kadynas, I got that book on Amazon.com from a used book seller. You might try there.
