View Full Version : Books: The India Ink Mystery Series

I write this series under the name of India Ink.

A nose for scent, and a mind for solving murder...

Meet Persia Vanderbilt, 'sensory specialist' extraordinaire, who moves to Gull Harbor to live with her aunt Florence and the 'Menagerie'--Florence's wild crew of felines, canines, and birds. Little did Persia know that when she signed on to work in Venus Envy--her aunt's bath and beauty shop and day-spa--she also signed on for adventure and mayhem. For all is not beautiful in the little ocean-side town of Gull Harbor, where things begin to go awry and murder rears its ugly head. And now Persia must safely find her way through the adventures that land in her path.

Gull Harbor WA, a small city on the (fictional) island of Port Samanish in Puget Sound, is home to an eccentric assortment of computer techies, artists, and recluses. Spectacular in beauty, the island is buffeted by storms--both from within and without. Nature comes calling in the rainy windstorms that soak the island, and murder comes calling in true Jessica Fletcher tradition.

AUTHOR NOTES: the people in this series do have sex on occasion...if you're looking for a G-rated book, these probably aren't what you want (put them at PG-13, with an occasional slip into R).

Okay, from the blurb I've got written up so far:

Bath and beauty...a shop devoted to bubble bath and bath oil and facials and fragrances and....you get the drift! I was going to set the series elsewhere, but my editor said they were looking for someone who could write a series set in that kind of setting and they thought I'd be perfect...and hey, my main focus was the characters, so I jumped at the opportunity, changed the setting, and signed the contract. Then they told me it would have to be under a pen name (for marketing, not because they don't want people to know it's me), and that was a hard one to accept but hey--I've used the name India Ink on the net before, I like it, I like the pun, and I love the name India.

So, that's what it's about...first one comes out next September. It's on her desk now. No final title yet, we're still working on that.

My editor just got around to reading the first India Ink book….she loved it—a few revisions I have to make but nothing major. She said that with each book, my writing just gets tighter and crisper—a good thing. And she’s agreed to, after the holidays, take a look at a proposal from me for a darker stand alone novel. And we’ve come up with a title we both like (knock wood her supervisor will like it) and the idea for a ‘concept’ for the India Ink titles. We want to call this one Narcissus Dying. Which fits with one of the names of the oils in the book, and we kind of want to take each title that way. AND she liked my title for the fifth Emerald book. AND…I broached the idea of having Emerald and Persia meet in a future book and she liked that! So just great things today from her!

YIPPEE!

Where are you moving to (and from?). Cross country is a long way. Good books are always a nice addition in a move, unless you're the one driving, and then I don't recommend reading at that point. *grins* (Audio books excluded, I guess).

My husband is in the Air Force. We are moving from Albuquerque, NM to Fort George Meade, MD. We are both originally from Reading, PA. Family will only now be a three hour drive away (I think that is a good thing LOL). Actually it will be nice to see some more green. This will be our fourth move; however this will be our first stateside move. We hit the road December 1st. My Dad is coming out to drive our car and my husband will be driving the truck. I get to entertain our four year old and the dog; AND read as much as I can. My other two sons will be riding in the car with my Dad.

LOL, I do keep a book in my purse at all times in case I get stuck in traffic. As long as my car isn't moving I am happy to sit and read to pass the time. Hmm I guess if I kept an audio book in the car at all times that would be a true sign I was addicted to reading huh? I've considered doing it! :D

That's going to be quite a shift in climate, won't it? Do you think you'll enjoy it? To be honest, I've never been east of Idaho, or south of L.A. (California). I have, however, been to Hawai'i, where my husband lived a good share of his youth, and we love it there.

I usually keep a notebook handy, because I don't read well in moving cars (I don't get motion sickness but find I really need to be looking out the window--just a quirk). But any time I go in someplace for an appointment, I take a book and my reading glasses!

Oh, btw, my new issue of my newsletter's online (see the newsletter thread for links).

:D Signed up for the newsletter! I'm an industrious kind of gal (or anal to my core, depends on how you look it right?!). :)

I grew up in PA (as did my husband and my eldest son was born there). It'll be nice, well okay the humidity might be a bit much at first. We lived in Japan and Germany before we moved here. I miss the moisture. My poor skin is so dry here.

It took a bit but I did get used to living here in the desert. It has it's own beauty. Sunsets are absolutely gorgeous here. I will miss those. I also have never seen a sky so blue, and the clouds (when we have them) are huge and fluffy. I know some of that is because of our elevation.

Before my husband joined the Air Force I had only done a bit of travelling outside of PA. I've enjoyed travelling to new places. Germany was my favorite place thus far, reminded me of home. We lived in Germany for 6 years. Japan was great once I made friends there (nothing like being alone in a different country, suffering from culture shock, being 7 months pregnant, and knowing absolutely no one there).

Hawaii would be a wonderful place to visit. We had thought of putting in for Hawaii, but finally decided that dealing with another air plane move was too much. :)

There is nothing better than a good book while you're waiting for an appointment (or standing in line, LOL). Gotta watch how absorbed I become or I don't hear my name called. :D

I've got a good friend who lives in Japan (transplant from here, teaches English there), and my oath-sister lives in Berlin, she moved back there (she was born in Germany). Hawai'i's wonderful, and we'd love to live on the Big Island--he has family over there--but there aren't any high tech jobs at this point. So it has to wait. Sucks. But the area we live in is really pretty, western Washington is gorgeous, and has been my home--in one city or another--for most of my life.

Got the cover for A Blush With Death--I love it!

Every corpse could use a little color!

There’s only one #1…
There’s a new makeover maven in town, and she spells big trouble for everyone at Venus Envy. Bebe Wilcox has just unveiled her own boutique, and she won’t stop until her shop has put everyone else out of business. Nothing is out of bounds, from stealing fragrance recipes to computer hacking and sabotaging supplies. But when one of Bebe’s pushy saleswomen ends up dead, the stakes become much more dangerous. Staging a public falling out with her Auntie, Persia gets hired at Bebe’s Boutique and begins snooping for evidence of wrongdoing. But can she find the goods before the killer decides to find her?

I really do like the cover a lot. I actually like it better than the first and I think the yellow will stand out on the shelves. I had a signing today over in Seattle, was nice--love the shop and they're good people. :)

Same people? I think they are awesome if we're talking about the same shop! :)

Yeah, the Seattle Mystery Bookshop. I like them a lot and love hanging out there during the signings. They're good people.

Well, I have to say, I am battling myself between Scent To Her Grave and Harvest. BUT...I am giving them both equal time. I think the 1st book of this new series is very SMOOTH and easy to follow. I like that a lot!........(from the Sisters of the Moon thread)

Readers and reviewers have been saying that Scent to Her Grave is very complex in the mystery and you know, I haven't been able to figure out what that means yet. I did find it a lot harder to write, as was A Blush With Death, just because I feel a lot more removed from the series and think that's going to continue, unfortunately. I'm in the beginning of plotting the third book now and so far, it's running about the same pace on struggles to figure out what I want to do as were the first two.

I am thrilled people like it, but it's a lot harder for me. Maybe I just don't know the characters on a gut level like I do in the other series, but then the first Sisters of the Moon book was a breeze to write. I think that it's the lack of paranormal stuff (not my choice) that makes me drag my feet. :) I do like Persia a lot, though I wish I could take her into more edgy situations. She's be perfect for a little less cozy setting.

I just found out the third India Ink book is due out in November, which means I have about three months to write it (just starting it). I think I'll go work now.

The 'official' title for the third India Ink book: Glossed and Found. And release date has been moved by the powers that be to: January 2007. A couple months later than planned, to allow production to have enough time to get on it.

I like it. :)

I'm still way sore, btw...my tailbone and hip took more than a little damage in that fall (see the why didn't I stay in bed thread in my forum if you don't know what I did).
