The most popular ephemeris are those whose listings are for midnight ,UT. However, there are available older foremat ephemerides called "Noon Ephemerides". These are based on an older form of finding the accurate ST by noting when the Sun passed the LMT noon meridian at Greenwich, England. This was the first method of making sure of the accuracy of the ephemeris during those times when time-keeping was done by mechanical means. Where the confusion is probable with new Astrologers using a Noon ephemeris is that the new day is reckoned from Noon Greenwich and not midnight. Therefore, whenever you calculate a chart using a Noon Ephemeris, you must SUBTRACT 12 HOURS from the derived UT. It is much easier to use a midnight/ UT ephemeris. However, the older style AT (Astronomical Time) Noon ephemerides are still available for those who prefer to use them. When purchasing an ephemeris, it is best to specify a Midnight/UT version. Whether the ones you may already have are Noon or Midnight is mentioned in the front of these reference publications. For those of you who want to study the Sidereal Zodiac, be sure that your ephemeris gives the SVP (Synetic Vernal Point) value at least once a month, as this is the accurate means to correct the Tropical Zodiac to the Sidereal.

A note about change of date; whenever a chart is cast for a certain place and time and when correcting the time to UT and the addition (or subtraction) of the difference to UT, places the chart's date into another day, you must calculate the chart as though it occured on the new day. For example, if one were born at 22:00 hours (10 PM) in the PST zone say, in Los Angeles, on June 1st , the correction, by adding 8 hours to find the UT, will place the UT of the chart into the next day, which in this case would make the calculation time at 06:00. UT.

PST birth...............................22:00:00 6/1
diff to UT...............................+08:00:00
UT..........................................30:00:00
subtract.................................24:00:00
correct UT and date...............06:00:00 6/2

And now an example using at AT, Noon ephemeris:

PST birth................................03:00:00 6/1
diff to UT..............................+08:00:00
UT birth.................................11:00:00
AT correction....................... -12:00:00
AT birth time..........................23:00:00 5/31 (note date change)

The Table of Houses; Although I personally do not use the 12-house system however, most Astrologers do. There are two significant systems of house reckoning, that is, where the demarcations of the several houses are given. It is suggested, for those who are taking these Basic Astrology series for personal education and for the sake of conformity, that the PLACIDUS house system be used. This is because it gives the RAMC to the second of arc and the subsequent houses are shown by the Zodiacal demarcations which are also the the most intense placements for the meanings of those houses. There are systems that show where the fringes or divisions of the houses are, thereby straddling the most intense areas in the heavens.

Houses are a earth-surface location system of dividing the heavens up into 12 additional divisions (or 16) other than those of the 12 Zodiacal signs. That is, the heavens are additonally divided into sections based on the Ascendant and Midheaven positions within an Astrological chart. Each house has a meaning which represents a theme rather than an actual physical element or an identifiable circumstance in one's life. Just as the signs of the Zodiac represents a theme of manifestation. It is the planets and Luminaries that show the more concrete circumstances that pervades one' existence.
