.... and It was great news regarding my health :bouncybob A few months back, my cholesterol was a bit high, in the 200's range. Well, the nurse at the clinic called and told me my cholesterol went down a lot in the last few months. Back at the beginning of the year, I jumped on the Atkins bandwaggon and ate nothing but meat, eggs, some veggies but not enough to balance out my diet. I noticed that I was losing weight, but started feeling like crap. After hearing of my cholesterol was up high, I went off of it and ate like I normally did before, pastas, veggies, some meats and hardly any eggs. I gained a bit of weight, but then lost when I started drinking more and more water. It was pretty much then when I realized that the Atkins diet really isn't what it's cracked up to be. It may work for others, but it sure didn't work for me.

Congrats! I was on Atkins for about a month. Mine actually dropped. Then again, I wasn't eatting bacon or eggs, which seems to be the popular Atkins food! I couldn't handle being on it for the simple fact that my family's diet revolves around carbs. I'm sick of hearing low card this and low card that also.

That's great to hear! Congratulations. _handclapp

It was funny... just yesterday I was at the doctor's for a stomach flu I've been fighting for a few days. This was the second doctor I'd been to, as the first didn't seem to do anything to help me and I was pretty miserable. Well... Doctor #2, was much more helpful. :) One of the things we talked about was eating. The first doctor had told me to keep stuff on my stomach, like eat something every couple of hours even if I didn't want to (he said something about protecting the stomach lining or some such bunk). Anyway, Dr #2 told me not to bother... eat when I want, and when I did start eating, start back with stuff like, "breads and rice". I chuckled and she said "Yeah, that Atkins crud can go out the window!" Seems it's not most Doctor's favorite diet. LOL

hey thats good to hear. Like to have all the mw members healthy. My friends started to get high blood pressure from the atkins, Im not a follower.I dont see how eliminating an entire food group can be seen as good in the long term.

that's the problem, you're not suppose to eliminate it in the long term...

you cut all carbs for like 2 weeks, this forces your body to feed on it's fat stores, then you SLOWLY start bringing carbs back into your diet...in low amounts, your body needs them to survive :p

but, I agree, it's a load of crap, I'M GONNA GO ON ATKINS AND LOSE WEIGHT! (pfft...yeah and die from a heart attack)

Thanks all for your support. Hearing that took such a load off my shoulders. My mother had heart disease and died back in '98. I'm still trying to get over it, but I don't think that's something you really do get over. I also lost my oldest sister back in 2000. She had just got out of triple by-pass surgery and died in recovery. They just couldn't get her heart to beat right and then it happened. She was only in her 40s. I'm goiing on 27 and don't want the same thing happening to me, so I have to do something about it. Heart disease is one of my biggest fears. ><

Congrats about your health! As for Atkins, pfft. Sure, it makes you lose weight, but it is far from being healthy. Calling the Atkins diet "healthy" is like calling an eating disorder healthy. I don't see how starvation can benefit anybody.

I agree. I don't like it one bit. You're only supposed to be on it for 6 months, if you read the book. ... anyway. I won't get worked up hehehehe :)

Good to hear you're getting better CrimsonFyre :)

Well, that's a good thing! Congrats. :bouncybob

It's all dependent on the body...I absolutely can't eat starches or complex carbs more than a couple times a week, and only small portions at a time. When I increased my meat intake, and decreased my starches to almost nil, my cholesterol dropped to 151 and it had started at 177. My fatty acids are good too. And my gastric reflux died down to a managable level (I'm allergic to wheat and sensitive to almost all grains except rice).

It all depends on what your body needs on an individual level. I eat some fruit and a lot of veggies, but for me, protein is the way to go, and yet I have a friend who lives on carbs and does very well for herself.

Atkins (which I don't do totally--can't have dairy and I eat a lot more veggies and fruits than they say to), is good for some, not good for others. What people need to do is find out what works for them and ignore all the hype about low fat, low carbs, etc. until they know which path is best for their body. (Though I do think everybody in this country eats way too much corn syrup and sugar).
