I used to ALWAYS carve my own pumpkin, but as I was walking through Wal-Mart I saw a shelf full of plug in pumpkins with a light bulb looking candle. They were only $15 for a large and came in some silly or scary faces..
Then I thought well maybe I should get one.. less mess and it saves me money cause I can re use it.. but then I also thought well it will use up hydro and its not fun to ruin tradition. Who says stripping a pumpkin of its guts aint living? :nyah:

No way, the pride of carving your own Pumpkin and putting a nice face on it, and then sticking that lighted candle in there and putting it on your window shelf for all your neighbours to see is a good feeling.

We actually have a few of those plug in pumpkins... but we just put them in the front window for decoration.. and ~still~ carve pumpkins to put outside on the front steps too. :)

I voted "carve a real one" because we always use a real one on the front porch but I also use the plastic, light up ones for indoor decoration as well. Tacky or not my kids love having them..

Ohhhhhh I Love Halloween!!!
I Seriously carve 5 to 10 pumpkins a season!!
I get Waaaaay into the whole “carving pumpkins” thing,
And I’m guilty of trying to drag as many folk into it with me, as I can!!
I always hold at least 2 “Pumpkin Carving” parties just before Halloween.
(Sometimes more)
One strictly with the little people in mind.
And another, that’s more of an Adult affair.
On the other hand,
I also have lots of those plug in pumpkins about to help with the overall decorating theme.
LmaoOOooooo ..
There can NEVER be enough Jack O Lanterns now,
Can There??

Plastic pumpkins are fine if you don't want the mess. My grandmother has one with a black cat on it that lights up  very cute. I like carving pumpkins better though, but my family hasn't done it since I was 12!

We love carving pumpkins, but last year there wasn't a pumpkin to be found. (It was a very dry growing season). We found a dense foam pumpkin in the store that was made for carving, so we did that. It wasn't the same, but it did save me the trouble of gutting it. :) This year we'll go back to the real thing. (Assuming we can find one).

My husband wanted to carve foam pumpkins this year, because he's so proud of his "masterpieces" and wants them to last longer. I told him "no way". To me, the whole thing is a ritual, from getting the pumpkins to getting all goopy and messy, to roasting the seeds, to setting your art out on the step. The fact that the result is temporary makes the actions that much more important!
Maybe I think too much about these things... :D

We carve the real ones....it's sooo much fun!
This year we're having a pumpkin-carving party at a picnicshelter at the river, for the kids.
That is going to be awesome ghoulish fun :ghostie: :ghostie: :ghostie:
I wouldn't mind having some plastic lit ones for the windows, though.

A real one!! I love carving them!! This year I want to get more than our usual number of only one!!! I got a set from abcdistributing.com---it's a cat face, ears, arms and legs that you put in the pumpkin! So my plans are to carve a couple and then have one for the kitty face!!

I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin carving, but I AM a huge fan of pumpkin seeds! That's the best part of carving a pumpkin, you get to bake the seeds and yum yum yum! I swear, I go through 2-3 bags of David's Pumpkin Seeds a week all year round. I'm an addict. Heh.

I love carving pumpkins, but i haven't had the chance to do one in so many years. last year my brother and I were supposed to share a pumpkin, but then my brother decided to be a moron and carve hitler's face on it, so i threw it away. I doubt if i will get around to carving this year, i hope so, but i really can't guarantee it.

The plastic pumpkin sounds cute. I always get a real pumpkin though. It's tradition. Also, I like things that are "real."

Real pumkins make Halloween feel so genuine and happy. There's just something about plastic that takes the feeling out of it for me. Carving the pumpkin with loved ones seems to bring everyone together and gives everything a festive quality.
As a bonus, there are alot of pumkin recipies which you can make good use of the day after Halloween. :dinnertim

Yup! There is nothing like carving your own pumpkin! It gives you a chance to bond with your family, show off your artistic side, and the smell of a jack o'lantern is one of those things that makes Halloween, well...Halloween! And the seeds, pies, and soups etc. that you can make with the pumpkin later make the holiday even better!

I do'nt care how messy it is, none of the plug-in types have designs as cool as the ones that come with the pumpkin carving sets (though, did you know that they have plastic CARVEABLE pumpkins now???). Besides, the mess is part of the fun. I always spread out newspaper on the living room floor, pop in a copy of Charlie Brown's Halloween & moan "I didn't know you were going to KILL it!!!" when I start gutting the pumpkin!

Real ones. I like the fake ones for inside because the cats don't try to eat the fake ones:lol: but outside go the real carved ones;)

I'm the only one in the family that isn't afraid of scrapping the seeds out heh, so I always do carvings, it's more fun that way.

I love to make up my own face & carve it into a pumpkin, I grew my own this year! Plus I love eating the seeds & making cookies & stuff out of the pumpkins too! I also will use the plug in ones. But I gotta have the real ones & if I had to make a choice I would stick to real ones!

When I was young my Grandma was really into ceramics. She had her own kilns and everything, taught classes, the whole bit. So as a result we have ceramic everything for the holidays. At Halloween we get out the pumpkin with the orange crushed glass for eyes and toothy grin and put it in the window so people can see it when they come up to the door. When it is lit up it is really beautiful, not to mention a special family tradition.

I don't think I'll be doing much decorating this year so I probably won't be pumpkin carving, either. It's not much fun by yourself. Hubby will be away until January. :wah:

That's too bad.
 You could carve a pumkin with a face and take a picture of yourself with it next to you.
Send him the picture with a note, "Wish this was you."
I bet he would love that.
Just a thought.
