Welcome to MW.
If you haven't done it already, I suggest you introduce yourself in the Introductions forum of General Talk. To access your profile, look up to where it says Quick Links. Click on the upside down triangle to get a pull down menu with all your options. If you haven't already done it, read the About Us and the Rules. The site gods are sticklers for them. :) Can't help you with meditation since I don't do it.

conditions for meditation: id say that the main one, which i think that most people would agree on is that you must be somewhere where you can concentrate and not be disturbed. its no good trying to meditate only to have your mum yell that its time for dinner. (ill never meditate in the middle of the day again! ;) )
some people prefer to meditate in the morning, others at midday, others in the evening. some people prefer candles and incense, some find them offputting. some people use music, some dont. the ways of meditating can be as varied as the people who practice it.
i personally usually mediate at night with candles and incense. that helps me. guided meditations are also really fun! you can get tapes, have someone else guide you through it, or record yourself onto a tape.
blessed be

Well, personally i wasnt satisfied by my former religion, and ive been interested in wicca for quite a while now...
i've always also been able to dream the future sometimes, happens quite often and i have always had a feeling when buying stones..like i oculd feel them, so i decided to learn more about wicca and discovered that it is my ideal religion, i also feel much more satisfied now...

Welcome home HDS!
don't worry about being a geek, we have lots of them here and we appreciate all the nifty things they can do. My other half is a programmer so I understand a little geek-speak.
Makes me wonder if you're not already familiar with slashdot and [H]ardOCP?
As for the meditation question, everyone does it differently and the easiest breakdown I can think of is to find a spot where you're comfortable, won't be disturbed and won't fall asleep. Clear your head, I know, easier said than done, maybe music or a repeated chant would work? Bring up the thing you wished to meditate on and let your mind play with it while you keep listening or chanting. Try not to force or interfere with the process or you lose the original intent.
Hope that helps, drop a note if you think of anything else.

Why did you decide to choose Wicca? Why not any other Pagan faith? There's nothing wrong with your decision as long as you're comfortable with it. But I know many new people run to Wicca and they don't seem to know many of the other faiths. Simply curious.

I was incredibly intimidated with meditation at first....I had no idea how I was going to be able to keep a "silent" mind. My mind's usually a million miles a minute with dicey cohesion of thought at times. I found a little shop in town that did guided group meditations. Learning that it's ok if thoughts pop into your mind...the trick is to not acknowledge them...just let them float by. I've also found that guided meditation cd's help in the begining. Best advice I can give is be patient and forgiving with yourself. There's no right or wrong way to meditate. Practice different methods until you find one that works for you. Now that I'm a bit more practiced at meditation if I'm in a group meditation or listening to a CD and don't follow the "script" I know it's ok. I usually use the guided meditation to get into the meditative state then let it go where it may.

Hi HDS! Welcome to MW! I hope you'll have a pleasant stay here..
I do have some tips for you.. Since you've only recently decided to follow a Wiccan path, it might be best to (ofcourse, next to meditation and all) seek out as much information as you can about your religion. Read books, online pages, articles, whatever you can find, not to forget THIS FORUM.. If you have any question on what you learn, try using a search first! Like Google, or this forum's search (its somewhere on top, click Search :)). If you don't find the answer to your question there, you can always ask. For instance, on meditation, I could find the following topics for you that might be interesting, only using the forum-search:
http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=27336&highlight=starting+meditating
http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=66768&highlight=meditating
http://www.realhealing.com/index.html
On Wicca itself, you have various sites to check out with good starters information! Here are some sites I recommend:
http://wicca.timerift.net/ <-- Contains all the basics, non-fluff info..
http://www.witchvox.com/ <-- A worldwide pagan community, great articles
http://www.shanmonster.com/witch/ <-- nice articles
http://rw.faithweb.com/info.html <-- loads of other starter-links.. check them out! Check the booklist as well!
If this seems like a whole load of information on just one topic, don't worry. This is NOTHING yet. But don't be scared! You have to keep in mind that you're following a path here, a path of selfimprovement, so to say. You can continue to learn forever, and you should, as it is the only way you'll ever find an answer to important questions. Questions that can't be answered on this board :)
Even if you find out eventually, that the Wicca you expected is NOT the real Wicca, don't try to force yourself into believing things you don't. Just investigate more to other Pagan religions (or any other religion, so to speak :)), and find one that REALLY fits you. If in a year you still feel comfortable about your beliefs, have re-evaluated it over and over, and really BELIEVE, than this is your path. Don't forget that the things you learn here will always come in handy in a later time, even if Wicca showed out not to be your path. Most of all, I cannot stress enough: Do NOT haste yourself in your learning progress. You have all the time, literally. If you find something interesting, persue learning about that subject as much as you want, but keep in mind that you can always read about it some other time, meditate on it some other time, etc. Keep focussed on the TOTAL image, not just one subject.. Investigate. Learn. Spend time, and effort. You will find that MW is a great source for both information and experience, as well as in gaining experience as in learning from other people's experiences. Come to the chat room! Get to know people! Read the FAQ so you won't do anything that is not appreciated here.
For all the rest, have a great time here :)

welcome to the site.
i don't know what conditions you require to be calm and 'dreamy' kinda... but i'd just say... make yourself comfortable, close your eyes. concentrate on a topic, but kindof let your mind drift at the same time. try not to be so attatched to reality.

Blessed Be and Welcome to MW.
Meditation requires focus of mind and body. In the beginning, lower the lights, put on some soft music ( I prefe Carlos Nakai), and light some protective incense (cinnamon works well).
Sit down, get confortable and let your mind connect to the Universe. Don't try to think of anything. Just let it happen.
This usually works for newbies.
For those of us that have been at it for a couple of thousand years, well we just look like we're daydreaming. We can do it anytime, anywhere, at will. Meditating in the showing works well. Also when on a bus, train or plane. But, never, never, never meditate while driving. That just isn't a good idea.

Welcome, HDS. Wicca and computers can relate. One must understand the differences between data and ephemeral, however. I have a print in my study of a sage working on a computer....not to bore you with details, but it does express the conflicts between reality I and reality II.
Blessed Be. Let me know if I can help you,
