View Full Version : Hey mol...what is a personal attack?
mol

It seems to be the buzz word around here lately...everyone thinks everyone is making a personal attack. Especially now that this place has official rules. So let me dispell the myth behind personal attacks. Oh, and I have volunteered EasternPriest to be my test subject. Im sure he will be pleased. :p
Obviously...personal attack...is really harsh for this type of environment. The first thing that pops to mind is me reaching through my laptop screen and punching EasternPriest in the mouth (:p). We all know...this is not going to happen.
So what is it?
Well, lets just call it a catch-all phrase for putting someone down.
This is a personal attack:
EasternPriest...you are an idiot!
or
EasternPriest...your opinons are not worth a penny!
Both of those phrases...are not very nice. And they are what I call a personal attack of another member. Which is not allowed here. Now, with that in mind...
This not a personal attack:
EasternPriest...I think you are wrong.
or
EasternPriest...I think your views on that matter are close-minded.
Both of those are NOT an attack...but someone stating an opinon and doing it with an amount of respect and courtesy.
Some would say...so are the first two! Well, thats true...they are opinions...but they are breaking the rule of courtesy...which is...an unspoken rule.
So. Lets look inside of ourselves and see exactly what IS a personal attack. I know every one of you know what is and what is not...you need know guidance. But, I just wanted to set the record straight. :)
Thanks to EasternPriest for being my guinea pig. Especially, since I never asked him in advance. Muwuahahaha. :)

For that clarification.......
it was timely and much needed ...........
sometimes all that is needed is a change of phrase or some explanation. I have seen some flame wars on message boards that would scorch your eyebrows, and I would hate to see this forum backing down from relevant controversial issues . Name calling is not the same as expression an opinion ..........

I demand apologies from everybody on the entire board! Many times I have simply flat-out stated "You are wrong" and suffered greatly for this! It is not a personal attack, it is a statement of fact! now how do I make the smiley with the weird tear like some weird anime guy? This one shall have to suffice :D

Ah...
But it is not a statement of fact. It is a statement of your opinion.

Hey Mol, is arranging President George W. Bush's words into a consice view on his beliefs considered to be a personal attack against the president?
And if it is, is it I who attacked him, or himself who attacked him? (Since they're his own words, not mine.)

Mol: did you consider that it was in fact an opinion of a more sexual nature? Or maybe even a suggestion?
I am not entirely certain but am willing to bet that it would be quite incorrect.

willowraven's answer is a good one, and the dictionary definition but i might add that the same type is found at the fringes of most religions, not only christianity, even or particularly when the mainstream says "live and let live".

PEOPLE. You are way off topic. The topic of this thread is "Hey mol... what is a personal attack?"
To get this thread back on topic and prevent it being consinged to the Graveyard of Just Silly, I shall provide an example:
Mol - you are a gooberhead!!!!!!!!

Hmm..not sure. All I know is...I dont have time to protect the world from personal attacks, just this Community...the rest of the world will have to fend for itself. :smoke:
