broom ( P ) Pronunciation Key (brm, brm)
n.
An implement used for sweeping, usually consisting of a bunch of twigs, straw, or bristles bound together and attached to a stick or handle.

That said... Besoms (Witchy brooms) can be used for cleaning your area in a spiritual sense. Also in certain handfasting rites jumping the broom is a fertility charm kinda thing.

It's actually not THAT hard to make your own ... And most people consider self-made items more ... spiritual? Maybe that's not the word I'm looking for. How about this - better for you =).

If nothing else there's always ebay...

Craft stores often have brooms that can be decorated, especially around the holidays. My mom used to buy a fresh cinnamon broom every year from either a craft store or the drug store down the street.

Look where you'd find wreaths and floral-arrangement supplies.

You could always just search for them using google. I've also seen them on Ebay.

HDS - I just bought a straw broom from Value Village in Oshawa (I'm sure you can find one in TO) It is for a halloween costume prop - but I can use it anyway I want - it cost $2 and the handle is bamboo I think and it's about 3 feet long.

I plan to use mine for a halloween party I am going to, then I will use it as a besom.

My son wants to keep it as he thinks it looks like a Harry potter style broom :)

This time of year you should have no problem finding straw brooms in stores.

I got mine, last year about this time. Its was on display in the halloween section in my newsagent. We use to have one in our backyard that was just there when we arrives but My parent through it away.pssst.

Also try garden stores. Its seen as a cute decoration.

If you wanna make your own.Get a large stick and then tie twigs to the top. Use some fancy ribbon and then superglue it.

well, I have a cinnamon broom up on my wall (don't ak how it stays up, im not even sure...). Anyways, I bought it a few years ago, so the cinnamon has pretty much worn off. I should probably buy a new one, but I'm too lazy, and I'm very attatched to this one. I don't actually use it for anything, its just decorational...

The broom or besom is used at the start of (some Wiccan or Wiccanesque) rituals to cleanse the space which you are going to work in – literally brushing away the cobwebs, as well as metaphorically. Operating within a clean and tidy environment is very good for the psyche, and helps you concentrate.

Traditionally, besoms are made of an ash staff, with birch twigs bound by willow. In modern associations, ash is a wood of healing and positive energies, whereas birch is the wood of new beginnings. Willow is representative of intuition and the Moon.

Symbolically, the broom is a fairly phallic object, and in folklore it was said to be taken into the fields at Beltane and ridden around to ensure and encourage a good crop. Some don't consider it to be strictly a masculine object, but both male and female – the twig brush nestling around the broom handle represents the union of god and goddess or man and woman. In this sense it is therefore a tool of balance, fertility and protection as well as cleansing, and can be kept in the circle as added protection. Some books will also tell you that the besom is a disguised staff (which is like a large wand, really). As such, salt can be sprinkled to cleanse an areas if a besom is not available (both representing Earth, and being a natural steriliser).

In handfastings, it is traditional for the couple to jump over a besom to ensure fertility and happiness, and when not in circle it can be kept by the back door to prevent unwanted energies or beings from entering your house.

that's what I did, too. At a time that I was REALLY short on funds, I found a "witchy halloween" broom in the halloween section of Target, and it only cost me a couple of bucks.

I don't know if I spelt that right but you can rescent your cinnamon broom. Just sprinkle cinnamon essential oil (which isn't very expensive) just try not to have it come in conact with your skin because it can be very irritating :nicetie:

Brooms also have a lot of history with Italian folk magic.
If you place a broom upside down in front of your door on holidays, witches will be compelled to count the straws and will not enter your home.
I've also seen some folks "sweep out the old year" by taking a broom to their floor on New Year's Day.

I ordered a cool broom from The Magical Cat,
and I think they may ship to Canada. The brooms range from inexpensive to expensive. Here is link.

where is a good wiccan shop in toronto
there's supposed to be a couple out queen st west, but when i went looking i couldn't find them.
one's called the purple pentacle, you should be able to look it up in the phone book. or try looking up bookstores in the yellow pages. toronto's big enough that you may be able to find listings for new age, occult, etc. if all else fails maybe try a holistic centre (the kind tht does reiki, iridology, etc)...they may be able to point you in the right direction.
