I had a Reiki healing today. The Reiki Master told me I had a lot going on in my right shoulder, and I hadn't noticed anything. However, by the time the healing was over, my shoulder was rather sore. I was surprised, because I felt the same sort of pain on and off a few weeks ago, but I'd forgotten about it.

Is this normal? Is it a good sign that the Reiki's doing what it's supposed to do?

you work up a tolerance for pain in the body, in your case over the past few weeks the pain you felt didn't go away your body just got used to it...when you get work like that done it will bring the tolerance down a little bit and bring awareness back to the area..so its kinda not normal to feel that, but nothing is wrong heh its working just fine, but it would probably take more than one session to have that pain actually go away and stay away.
happy healing:thumbsup:

reiki just speeds up the healing so you'll probably be really sore tommorow and then your pain should be gone after that.

I don't know much about reiki, but when I saw your post, moonstone, I felt suspicion. :wtf:

After reiki treatment, things will sometimes get a little worse before they get better. It just shows that the area is healing. No need to worry.

Never let them touch you again." orders from my guides.

After what a "Reki Healer" did to me, never again. It's a long story.

The Reiki master did not manipulate you in anyway did they?

Reiki can NOT be used to harm, IF is it used correctly. Yes, you may have a healing crisis where you get worse before you get better, but that is also true in allopathic medicine, as well.

As a practicing Reiki Master and Teacher...I take exception with this statement. Would you care to share the experience...it doesn't sound like Reiki based on what you've said.

JMO and YMMV,

Reiki in and of itself cannot harm you, only help.

It's common to experience a healing crisis before feeling better ; it's your bodies way of saying "Oh crud look at what I've been dealing with! Yuck!"

A couple of notes here -

Reiki practitioners do not need to touch or manipulate you physically at all. Ever. That is not Reiki. If you're getting "man-handled" then you should stop the session immediately (Unless of course the Reiki practitioner is a liscensed masseuse/r and you went to them with the intent of getting a massage ;)).

Also, -yes- it can take more than one session for things to "get better" . I typically find three treatments is a good number... "One to clear, one to heal, one to seal the deal" as it were...

Lady Avalon - Please share your experience, I agree with pearls that it sounds like your experience was not Reiki based.

Thanks for your responses. Basically, during the treatment (which was typical, just placing of hands on or over my body), I started feeling a pain in my shoulder. When it was over, I was sore for about a day or so, and then it went away... and actually... it feels even better than it did when I thought it wasn't hurting! The session in general felt wonderful.

I got my Reiki I attunement, and experienced some pain in my jaw afterwards, but other than that... I haven't had any other averse reactions to Reiki. I think it's pretty much how illnesses and such often need to peak (like a cold) before they can get better...

That's pretty much exactly it :) ... You received your Reiki attunement and your teacher didn't mention that to you? Strange!

NP--I have my Reiki I students do a 21 day self-treatment and cleansing regime. I also tell them they are going to have quite a few phyiscal things peak and release. We talk about a healing crisis as part of the class. I want them to be able to talk intelligently with their clients when they are healing people.

Hope this helps,

Elise

PS--be prepared Reiki 2 will bring up a lot of emotional issues when you get that attunment.

I'd have to agree with the creativity bit!

Though I didn't really have a huge mental issue with my level 2 attunement - it was pretty mellow, so was my level 1 attunement. Anyway... :offtopic:

I have had a few Reiki sessions with my therapist. She always plays Celtic music when doing it and I end up in a trance. She does this for an hour. I'm kind of saddened because I can never manage to reach the Astral Plane even at those times when I feel at my greatest.
But anyway, my first experience was odd. I started seeing my therapist because I was cutting myself. She did her first treatment and my left arm (the one I was cutting on) felt very tingly. The rest of me felt like I was floating but my left arm felt real heavy and painful, not bad pain, annoying pain..lol. When the session was over it felt very light and tingly, which was weird since it had been so heavy. My whole body felt much lighter after that first session. It was truly an amazing experience. My therapist learned Reiki from a Shaman and she follows Virginia Satir's work. Have you heard of her?

She wrote a book about Reiki that's been translated in to several languages.

She says the Reiki master simply channels energy though themselves to you and it's there for you to take, as much as you need.

I spent quite a while with her one afternoon, and I didn't come away with any sense that Reiki could be harmful.

I think as some others have suggested it might be part of the healing process.

Just as I read this thread, I felt tingles on my arm. I think there has been some leftover Reiki energy being sent here o_O

Reiki is an energy that every single one of us has. It is brought out in the Reiki level/initiation process. The sensations that can be felt vary from hot to cold to vibrating to tingly to nothing at all; what you feel depends on you as an individual.

I was taught that Reiki energy is always pure, so much so that even the state of mind of the healer makes no difference. Reiki is not used to "make things happen." The intent is for the highest good, and that does not necessarily mean "healiing" in the way that you would expect it.

After my first Reiki treatment, my entire life seemed to fall apart.

There is argument as to whether it can cause "harm," especially if an individual attempts to abuse it. As Reiki masters, most of us do not believe that this is even possible since Reiki energy goes where it is needed with no direction from the sender.

Some people feel uncomfortable during treatment and may cry or feel jittery. This is typically in response to Reiki working on emotional issues. I have heard people say that they have similar experiences in yoga or other forms of meditation.

Yeah, have you ever noticed how someone who is in constant pain can be a real extreme person to deal with(a real bitch, a real bastard, a real whiney baby, etc) and may not even acknowledge the pain is even there, then when they finally get the sorse of the pain removed(say a bad tooth pulled) they become one of the sweetest individuals you've ever known, almost overnight? That's the tolerance for pain and how we deal with it working. So relieveing such as that is important not just to yourself, but to those around you.

Yes. I have lived with chronic pain for 15 years and the older I get, the harder it is to tolerate it. Nothing has relieved it, not even Reiki. The cause could have easily been prevented had doctors not treated me like a neurotic woman.

It affects your entire personality, and sometimes even you don't realize it when it's always there and you don't feel particularly different. The only pain I'm particularly aware of are muscle spasms - I know that three or four hours of those and I am ready to rip someone's head off. Give me a few days of them and it's a lot worse!
