Hi all!
By popular demand, here's a God for ya'!
TAMMUZ
Assyro-Babylonian dying and resurrecting vegetation God.Beloved of Ishtar.
Originally he was Sumerian, call Dumuzi, consort of Inanna. To the phoenicians he's Adoni(Lord]similar name for God in Bible). The Greeks and Romans called him Adonis.
He's a reflection of the vegetation cycle.Tammuz dies, after time he comes again,he grows, and dies once more at the harvest.
He and Ishtar loved one another. He is killed by a wild boar.(Think of Cerridwen, the boar could be a masculine form of The Goddess)Ishtar is totally freaked by the death of Tammuz.Devastated.She goes to the underworld to retrieve him.(see the thread called The Descent of Ishtar/Inanna) The earth is barren, she needs him to help her fertilize it.After going through 7 gates, she nakedly meets her sister,Ereshkigal,Queen of the Netherworld,to plead for the life of Tammuz. It don't work.Ereshkigal is unmoved and punishes Ishtar. The land is barren.
Ea,the God of Wisdom,Magick, and Water, sends an unfertile eunuch with a spell to Ereshkigal. The spell works.Ea's water purifies Ishtar(the life water bag)and she returns to the Earth.Tammuz is freed also. With the return of Tammuz, the Earth is fertile once more.
The death and rebirth of Tammuz was enacted each year, just after the harvest. The women would mourn Tammuz as they would a dead husband and say"Tammuz,Tammuz,Tammuz the all great is dead!" Quickly fading vegetables such as lettuce were grown, when the vegetable died it was thrown into a lake, river,or the sea, into water. Then all rejoiced and hailed the rebirth of Tammuz.
In Isaiah 9 v11 and Ezekial 8 v13-14 the Hebrews are condemned for the worship of Tammuz.Plutarch claimed the Jewish ban on pork was a result of Tammuz being killed by a wild boar.Who knows?Tammuz is very Near Eastern, very influential to the Hebrews. One can see a prototype of the Christian messiah in Tammuz.

Once again,if anybody has anything to add,or set straight here, please do.(:
Peace and Love
