A little stupid question: Would you name your child something that means "death", "pain", "sorrow" or something like that? I don't think I would. I would like my childrens' names to have positive meanings. :nyah:

maybe if I didn't know it meant that, but I wouldn't intentionally name my child anything like that, no

Quite possible, I would. If I liked the sound of the name, I have no real use for what others percieve as the meaning.

My first and middle name frequently (as there are a lot of conflicting sources for name meanings) mean "pure sorrow." But, I rather like my name. It took my years to get over hating my middle name, but now I think it's great. :T

My best friend's name means "of death".....and it's a beautiful name, with long historical traditions in the country that she's from.

Death is not necessarily a "negative" to be compared to the "positive"

My name means "Light of the dawn" and suits me not. one. bit. The bouncy, "positive" aspect of the meaning annoys me to no end.

Heh. My son's name means "dweller by the bramble bush stream".....while we actually live by the train lines and a main road. But we just loved the name and used it anyway. Perhaps it's a portent for his future *smiles*

I don't really follow the meanings behind the names...so as long as it's a name I like,I'd use it.My youngest sons name means "Tiler of roofs" anyways, obviously I didn't choose it because of that :tongueout

I don't worry much about name meanings, but I probably wouldn't give my child a name that means 'sorrow'. Death isn't so bad, but just general sadness...:\

My name can be translated to "War" and "Hope." *...shrugs...* Not exactly sad, but not all that happy, either. My fiance's name means "Warlike" and "Noble." I think names carry power, help shape our identities and personalities and should be given with consideration. I don't see anything wrong with giving a child a name that means "Sorrow," but I do think it should be balanced by something else.

Sure! Of course, I have to like the sound of the name, first. I don't usually go by meanings behind names.

my daughters name means either Gods oath or iron beauty. Both sound a little strange but her name is beautiful and fits her perfectly. I think thats really all that matters about a name.

I would not name my child something like that. I know names don't always suite a person, like Morrigen said, but I can't help but think that some people are really affected by their names. You know, like how some names have certain associations with them and people connect them with stereotypes? And some people even internalize it. For instance, some people might automatically assume someone named Britney or Tiffany is an airhead or a Bertha is not very attractive. It's silly, I know, but a little true. I actually did know a Bertha and she wasn't very attractive. Ok, I'm rambling now. But I like names with strong and, what I consider, positive meanings.

My name Tamara means "Palm Tree".. A name like sorrow seems romantic somehow. I have always hated my name..especially it's shortened nickname Tami. I hate it when people name their children things like Apple,or moon unit. My cousin adopted a child named Tank..thankfully, he was just a baby and they changed it to something else.

I named my son Carcass =) And my other son is named Downfall ;) Does that answer your question? :P

Of course...they were sims, but...still :P

I don't think I would use such a name for a healthy living child. If I should have ever to name a child I've lost(miscarriage) I would strongly consider such a name, or a variation on a puritan name (Angel Return) or some such...

Don't forget "Cassandra". Greek for "Prophet of Doom", and all.

If he was from a different country, the name might have been considered normal there, and possibly even be a popular name.

And if he was from here, the mother might have named him Tank so he'd be easy to find someday, if she wanted to go and find him. [[shrugs]]

If/when I have a boy I plan on naming him Tristan...which means sadness. I do however plan on his middle name being Gabriel after the Archangel...to balance it out.

my first name means 'a wish.'

i really want to name my kids (if and when i have them) something out of the ordinary but then they might sound too outrageous and they'll hate me forever. what does everyone think of the name Mabon for a girl? it's pronounced May-bon.
its my own magic name
for a boy i wouldn't mind Julien, Stefen or Mordred....lol ok maybe not that...that can be a middle name :excuseme:
But you get my meaning. i want something that no one else has, but not TOO weird or people will start to talk...any ideas?????

No! I'd never want to name my kids names that mean something negitive. My middle name means "Full of bitterness and sorrow", I've always detested it. :2G:

My son's name means "bent nose" and I have to admit that I was a little worried about what that would do. But it's a pretty popular name and thank goddess he doesn't have a bent nose, so everything worked out.

Probably, mostly due to not knowing it meant something like that... i'd only do it porposly if i really loved the name.
My daughters name means : Light. and my sons name means : Firm, strong :)
I'm happy with those meanings.

That's why my mom didn't name my brother Tristan. It's a lovely name, but means sorrowful birth :whatgives

My first and last names together mean great queen turnip :2G: it sucks because the turnip name was just one my grandfather adopted, my last name SHOULD be Ellington, which is my middle name. I don't know what it means though.

Where I lived in Africa they name their kids all sorts of things, never mind Batman for one, but my younger brothers best friend was named Hardlife ... all uphill from there huh?
