View Full Version : Who's restored your faith in humanity with a random act of kindness?

Today, I left work early as it was pouring all day and I was a bit concerned about the roads flooding. Wouldn't you know it, I had a spectacular blowout on the way home. I'm not talking about just a flat tire, I'm talking shredded rubber flying by my window!
I pulled over and started dragging my spare tire out, in the pouring rain. And what do you know, not one, but two lovely gentlemen stopped and changed my tire for me. In the mud and wet, one wearing a business suit. I never got their names, but their act of kindness is so very much appreciated. Thank you, gentlemen, even though I know you'll never see this. :hearthear
So, what kind things has someone unexpectedly done for you? :)

wow - that's so great :D :hearthear
for me... man, i don't know. there have been so many really cool random acts of kindness in my life... like the time a friend of my mom's stopped by with $50 in gift certificates for a local grocery store... the time my kidlets and i got 'stranded' on a quiet street in a huge rain storm and a store owner invited us into her closed store until the rain slowed and we could move on... the time i was a few dollars short at the grocery store and the person behind me paid the rest...

Ohhh, poor Calyx. That was awfully wonderful of them. Especially with hubby out of town. Glad you and the car are alright and your faith in humanity has been restored.
For me it was my husband getting my son to sleep without the hour long screaming fit. No really, that did actually restore my faith in humanity.

There isn't enough room to list them all-- but I can say hi to the majority right here.
But I do want to say extra-special hellos to DragonsChest and Caffiend in just the past few days. :hugz:

Just a little while back, I was having a bad day--I was in tears, actually--and I pulled up a browser and wandered here to MysticWicks...and there was a PM waiting for me from Avalon, telling me that she had talked to Gnomey to wish him luck on his exam, and, to quote...
I also told him what a wonderful girl you were, and that he should always take good care of you. His reply:
I know...and I will. There's no doubt in that. :)
The randomness of it, and the sweetness on both her part and his, stopped my tears immediately. Avy, you really made a difference that day. _pounce_

I would have to say that the single one person that restores my faith in huhmanity would be my mother-in-law. It really isn't anything she does, it is just her attitude about the whole world that does it for me. If I had to pick any one person to be my role model it would be her. But as for acts of kindness the one that really pops to mind is a couple of weekends ago I was on my way to work and had a blow out and I called my husband and he came to rescue me, changed my tire and never complained about it. And this is saying something for him, he likes to complain. He followed me back home and his aunt went in to work that day for me. So I got to take it easy.

I was just thinking about this today actually , itwas awhile back and is a bit of a long story so please bare with me .
I was volunteering at a camp for kids with certian dissadvantages , physical and mental , there was this little boy there who loved to give people hugs and would follow everyone around all the time , he was twelve yet looked five and was mentally handicapped . While some of the other kids would often say yew gross or get it away from me when he would try to hug them , he would then come to us staff crying and we of course would cheer him up instantly . Now you would think these other kids should of been able to indentify with him seeing as how they had problems of their own . Well I went home two weeks after he left with all of it still fresh in my mind .
A couple weeks home I was over at a friends house sitting on the porch when to my surprise who should come over and hug my friend . Now this girl (my friend ) was probably one of the most nasties spiteful people I knew at the time , but here she is giving this boy a hug and treating him so nicely . It turns out that everyone on the block was the same way with him and his younger sister , even the kids I always deemed brats because of the way they play with each other treated him with the most kindness . Months later a fire started in the boys house , everyone got out fine but alot was ruined , well everyone came together and helped them out so much it still brings a tear to my eye thinking about it .
If anything in this whole world showed me that everyone no matter how mean they appear still has some compassion this did .

I would have to say a dear sweet friend who knew my circumstances after the flood.I lost every thing in that one day.Home, clothes, car, job, all earthly possessions. My friend knew I had been placed into an apartment and I was looking hard for a job. I had no money or family close by. He would come by and drop off food and see if I needed to go anywhere.I know there was a time when he had it rough and I was there for him but I never expected it in return. After all my savings were depleted and I still had no job and was going to be evicted He came thru again without ever asking me.He came by and said pack your things up and come with me.He took me into his home and also helped me get a job at the place he worked. I can never repay all the things he did for me but I will never forget them either.

A woman my husband knows sent us a check for a rather sizable sum of money that we were instructed not to spend on bills. For no reason.
And we've been delighting in paying it forward.

While travelling abroad in the Carribean, a random cab driver found the plane ticket that had fallen out of my briefcase, returned it to my hotel, and left, before I'd even realized it was missing.

It was almost three years ago, but the effects are still present in my life. :)
WandererInGray.
I met her on BeliefNet in November 2000. June 2001, she put together a camping trip in CO for people she had become friends with on BNet. I went out there and spent 5 days with her and a bunch of other people. We had a blast, for the most part (Wig knows why the "for the most part" ).
After September 11th, after having only known me online for almost a year, and in person for only 5 days, she offered to let me move in to the house she was renting so I could move back to CO. I had been thinking about it, but I had no idea how I would manage it. I had never asked her for help, and I certainly never expected it. She just gave it, more times than I can count, over the year and a half that we were roommates, and never asked for anything in return. I had lost my faith in almost everything after September 11th. Wig knew it. She jumped in, grabbed me (and sometimes shook me  ), and showed me that the world is still good and beautiful.
I have an amazing life now, and I honestly think I woudn't have any of the things I have if it wasn't for her and her love and kindness for someone she really didn't know all that well. I never would have had the courage to jump so blindly into my life alone.

Just recently, we were at a fair. You know, with huge rides, tons of carny games, lots of food and animals, etc. Our older kids had played a game where they won a 2ftx3ft picture in a cheap-o plastic frame. They stopped a couple games down to toss ping-pong balls into bowls and try to win a fish.
A couple hours later, we were eating and one of the kids said "where's my picture?" Apparantly, we set them down at the fish game and left them there. To make the kids happy (since we adults *knew* the pictures would be gone) daddy went back to the fish game to check.
Would you believe he came back with thier pictures? The guy who sold them the ping-pong balls noticed we left them there when we walked off and he picked them up and set them inside the game in case we came back.
So, not all carney-game guys are rip-off artists.

This one time (at band camp (well not really, I just couldn't resist  )) I dropped my purse in the local park. Someone picked it up, phoned me, and I went round to pick it up from her home (loaded with a thankyou bottle of wine and choccies). Not a penny was missing :)

Those are such good stories! :uhhuhuh: I'm glad to hear there are so many random acts of kindness out there.
My next question is, what are you doing for someone else? _whistle_
