View Full Version : Weird Wicca question -- HPS circlets?

Now, I'm not Wiccan... and other than the absolute basics, I know woefully little about Wicca.

Anyway, I've been commissioned by a lady to make her a crescent moon circlet. The way I have it now, it can be flipped over and worn with the horns pointed either up or down. From an aesthetic standpoint, I think I'd like to have a teardrop shaped bead dangling from the curved, bottom part of the moon, along with chain and bead drapes from the band itself; this would make it to where it could only be worn in the typical 'horns up' position that's all over all of the pagan supply catalogues. (I think it would 1) look cool, and 2) be a convenient way of camouflaging the safety chain.)

So, I guess I don't really have a problem, but it got me to wondering, is there significance in which direction the "horns" of the moon point? Will I be messing stuff up in some mysterious way if I make it to where the horns could only point up -- do you guys ever have a reason for having the horns point down?

The gal I'm making it for is a solitary, and a pretty new one at that, and wasn't sure if there was significance in the position of the moon. I tried Googling for it, but I only got about a million variations of "Wiccan priestesses often wear crescent moon crowns." Yup -- they sure 'nuff do! ...But what are the little moon nuances (if any) that wacky heathens like me might not be aware of?

Not sure... But I wonder if the same superstition that governs how one hangs up a horseshoe would be applicable here?
Horseshoes are hung points up to cup and hold good luck for the household.
However, a blacksmith might hang one points down over his forge, so the good fortune runs out into his work.

I don't think I've ever seen a pic of anybody wearing one points down...

I don't think I've ever seen anybody wearing it with the points down either; then again, I hadn't paid any attention until the last couple of weeks either. ;)

My best guess was that the points pointed up to draw the moon (Goddess) into the priestess. (Does that make sense? It doesn't really, but I can't think of how else to say it.) I couldn't find anything to support that theory. Oh well.

Your horseshoe idea is an interesting thought! I hadn't considered anything like that. Thanks much! :)

If all else fails you could go to her with drawings and ask her preference. As everyone believes different symbols mean different things especially in different directions. For example...some people believe an inverted pentagram is the sign of an evil witch or black magic. Other people believe it is the elements ruling over the goddess. It is all personal preference. :)

I'd ask her... I've never seen one used horns down, but I'm also not Wiccan and haven't seen inner circle only use of one. There also might be other reasons she might not want the beads/chain or something specific she might want to add to it if she knows about it (I know that if I had a need for it, and the beads idea was practical, I'd be acquiring specific symbolic stones for the beads...)

Whoa. Yesterday, I was trying to find a circlet to buy. Crazy coincidence... my thoughts and the posts here. *giggles* I've never seen one with the horns pointing down. I wouldn't see the need to have them pointing down... the horns pointing up mimic the "goddess position" that some take during ritual when e/invoking the god/dess. :)

-Ember: ...I'd be acquiring specific symbolic stones for the beads...

We've worked that out; we went through about 18 different designs and settled on one before I ever started making anything. Hammered out the stones right off too. I'm really pleased with what we came up with -- and even more disturbingly pleased that it seems I'll be able to make it! :D

MagickalMeli: I wouldn't see the need to have them pointing down... the horns pointing up mimic the "goddess position" that some take during ritual when e/invoking the god/dess.

Ah, that does make sense. :uhhuhuh:

Thanks much for the input, guys! :)

i agree with MagickalMeli. 'horns up' is also symbolic of the cup or the cauldron, both very feminine symbols.

There is a very BIG difference!!!!

One point up is the Goddess Path. Two horns up is Satanic. See The Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey.

They're talking about a crescent moon crown, not a pentacle.

Not to mention that is hardly a constant. For example, many Wiccan trads use the inversed/two-horns up pentacle to mark second degree initiates.

Maybe it has to do with Goddess with-in vs Goddess With-out......

I too have never seen it worn with two points down. I think circlets are very magickal, and peter stone has some nice ones out..... I think when I finish my first degree, along with my stole, I'll get a circlet, and I think I'm leaning towards having a pentacle on it....

Points up. Why? Have you ever seen the New Moon with both horns pointing down? I sure aven't, but I have seen it points-up. Are things different in the Southern Hemisphere? Can the New Moon appear with both points down?

I was under the same impression that its symbolism of the Goddess Position.
