View Full Version : Please enlighten me

I just ordered a pizza and something very bizarre happened so I'm hoping someone out there can enlighten me on this new pizza policy.

I asked if they had any specials. They said they had a one-topping 16" for $10.99 and so I said I wanted pepperoni. But when she gave me a total and it was $14 and I was like "how did I get from 10.99 to 14?" She said "your topping" and I said "you said I got one topping in the deal" and she said "yes the cheese is your one topping anything else is extra."

What?

Naturally my reply was: "cheese is part of the pizza! it's not pizza without cheese!"

Her reply: "No, cheese counts as a topping." A plain pizza is just sauce and bread.

what?!

THEN she tried to force me to accept the price by screaming the price at me again and telling me it would be there in 45 minutes over top of my protestations.

Did I miss a memo or something?

i'd call back, and if they still don't listen, take the pizza, give them the $11 and slam the door.

I always thought 1 topping meant something listed on that list....like meat or vege's or something :whatgives: It's those health freaks out there ordering their pizza with no cheese...THEY did this.....THEY turned cheese into an added topping!!!
LETS GET EM!!!! :imout:

Now that I think about it----I try not to think cuz it takes so long but I kept thinking about pizza----whenever I've done that one topping deal I got mushrooms. The cheese was always just there as part of the pizza. So I flip-flop on my previous statement and say that you were ripped off. Enjoy you're pizza anyway, but never go to them again. Unless you work this out with management and they give you a credit for something.

That's rediculous. That's like charging somebody for the sauce on their spaghetti or the dressing on their salad.

May as well charge extra for the yeast in the dough, too!

Actually my mom informs me that years ago she ordered a pepperoni pizza from this place and they did indeed deliver a pizza with no cheese, just sauce and pepperoni.

But that was like 19 years ago and I've ordered lots of pizzas since then with no trouble.

I think on traditional italian pizzas, cheese is an extra topping.

i never encountered that...
here cheese is a natural & integral part of the pizza!

According to Wolfgang Puck, pizza was invented to honor Italy's flag which means the cheese (the white) is necessary. You think I should call Gino's and tell them that? :D

What pizza place was this?! I've never heard of that before! Every time I've seen "one topping" or "two topping," that's after the cheese. I've never seen a place in Denver that wasn't like that. Dominoes, Pizza Hut, Blackjack, Papa John's... they're all that way.

Talk about ripoff in your case... :dis: I think it's a good idea not to accept the pizza. You have every right!

Last I knew, extra cheese counted as a separate topping, but it's implied that cheese comes on the pizza.

barlitone
October 13th, 2004, 06:07 PM
Cheese is not a topping, the person/store is ripping you off.

I've ordered from Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Dominoes, Little Caesars, Imos - just to name a few. Each of them have a special like that, and they always give me the topping of my choice. Extra cheese is a topping, same as Peperoni, but I've never heard of getting an extra charge for the peperoni.

Ask for the manager and make an ass of yourself until you get some free pizzas. It works, and you're within your rights. There is probably some kind of "How are we doing?" 1-800 number; and trust me - I worked at Hardee's and my friend worked at the Hut - They listen to these calls, and a dissatisfied customer is a terrible thought for them - you'll probably get some coupons for free food.

I agree, what kind of place counts cheese as a topping?

I've ordered from Mazio's, Domino's, Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Little Ceaser's, Cici's, Olive Garden, plus a handful of small pizza shops around here, and none of them have ever considered cheese as the one topping on one topping deals.

Pizza is Neopolitan. 'Pizza' itself is Italian for 'a mess'.

WTF mate?? EVERYWHERE I've been has not counted cheese as a topping. Cheese and sauce and dough are automatic. Anything else is extra. That's how it's always been, damn it!

You got robbed! Who would order a sauce pizza? That's just... stupid and messy!

:grrrrr: No way is that right. If the cheese was one topping then when you said you wanted pepperoni the cost would have been $10.99 as advertized, but there wouldn't have been any cheese. She was trying to get you to pay for two toppings, cheese and pepperoni, and she was probably going to pocket the extra money she was charging. Definitely report it to the store manager, and to the corporate office (snail mail, email, or phone).

But y'know what? Here in Rhode Island, they actually *do* have pizza with just sauce - and people order it all the time! I started seeing it at cookouts and such this summer and was like 'wtf is this?' but apparently it's a Rhode Island tradition. Go figure. :wtf:

Tangerines, I looked at your link, missed it the first time, and I find it intersting cuz it goes so far back into history. So people were eating the same 'pizza' on different continents at the same time. So, if your link is correct, there is no conclusive eveidence of the origin of pizza. Which leads me to my theory that it is a perfect food, a mana, given to us by the deities. Sucks when you have to pay for cheese on it, but divine just the same.

I've never encountered it, but technically true.

I wouldn't have bought anything from them.... the 'tude.... sheesh... If it counted cheese as the one topping they should state that size cheese for said price.

Just a note... pizza didn't orriginally have cheese. Or tomato sauce. Bread, often another type of sauce (tomato's are a new world thing) and various toppings.

I used to work for Papa John's back in the late 90s....cheese was not considered a topping...so from the point of view of Papa John's, yes, you got ripped. But every pizza chain could be different. I'd definitly be raising hell about it though! Because of the attitude alone.

Craziness, ITA. Glad you voted with your buck and went somewhere else for your pizza!

LOVE pepperoni pizza--good thing it's so expensive and I don't order it too often, b/c we all love it and we'd be as big as houses if we had it all the time!

Aidron
October 13th, 2004, 07:40 PM
This is absolutely moronic. Cheese is not a topping. Extra cheese is, though to be honest I disbelieve in the fact that they actually add more cheese.

Cheese, crust, sauce, this is pizza. I would have told the person on the other end of the line what a warped sense of perception they have and ordered from somewhere else.

By the way, no place around here pulls that kind of stunt. If they say you get one topping for such a price, you get one 'topping', and cheese is included. To do so any other way is like charging you for the grocery bags when you go grocery shopping (sales tax arguments aside nit-pickers).

Bec_W
October 13th, 2004, 07:47 PM
In itself that doesn't make sense, if you ordered a pizza for $10.99 which had one topping included in that price, you should still be able to pepperoni on that pizza, you just wouldn't get cheese. I smell something bad and it's not blue vein!

So, in American, if you order pizza you've got to order each topping you want? It's the little differences you've got to love :D

You know what Lunacie? Once again you make sense out of the chaos of the world! I am going to call and talk to the manager tomorrow because I think you MUST be right. It especially makes sense in light of the fact that the drivers answer the phone at this place.

This place it not a national chain though it is a very large chain in WV, KY, OH, VA, TN and I think IN and PA. It's owned by one of our state senators here in WV

I had that happen to me at a Little Ceasar's many years ago in Michigan! Except they counted sauce as 1 topping and cheese as the second topping! Those bastards!
It was a three topping pizza for like $8.00 but two toppings are practically pizza mandatory. Ergh...oh well. Now I buy frozen pizzas or make my own, yum. :)

I have managed a few pizza places in my time.I have never heard of cheese being considered a topping. We only charged if they wanted extra cheese.I smell something very fishy.I hope You caught that girls name as I would call the store and do some investigating.Even if they do say they consider it a topping ,#1 You asked for pepperoni,#2 That did not require that girl to be rude to You,#3 Ask the manager if yelling at the customers is a common practice.
