View Full Version : What do you find the most frightening?

October 14th, 2004, 03:04 AM
I was watching a programme about aliens lastnight and alien encounters, and it got me thinking. If aliens are real, then when you think about it, they seem more frightening than ghosts/spirits. Spirits are just us, after we've left our physical body and aliens are a completely different being.
I was just curious on how everyone else will vote and your opinions.
edit : sorry, this should have gone in the paranormal thread, can 1 of the mods move it please? thanks

Well thats how i thought, aliens... why would we be scared of aliens? But when i thought about it, theres been people reported to have been abducted and had tests n stuff performed on them, imagine if this is the truth? Imagine that this could happen to anyone of us.... And if aliens are real and are advanced in their learning, we may never know, and they may always have the better of us.
There was a bloke who went out for a walk and was missing for 5/6 days, he was found on a heap of cole, organs had been removed through tiny holes and certain bits of his face had been taken away, done so precisily it'd have taken a fully trained & expeirenced person to be able to perform it, and it's also the same for the reportings of animals, i mean, how many ppl do you know would steal a sheep take it away for the night to perform this stuff then return it? Remembering, most these things happen in the middle of no where!!!
I don't think people should be scared of spirits, we ARE spirits, just inside a physical body. Of course there are evil spirits, just as there is evil people in the world. But generally, no, i don't think they should be seen as frightening.

*feels a bit childish* To be honest I'm afraid of ghosts, it sounds absurd to say it out loud, it probably doesn't help that I'm also afraid of the dark, though I think that has a more to do with ghosts then actual darkness.

Well, I don't believe in space aliens, so I can't exactly be afraid of them. :) I used to be obcessed with the idea, but as I've gotten older, I've realized that there's probably little more than organic substances, possibly cells. Then again, I have an odd tilt on the universe and it's size.
And Ghosts... well, they're only frightening if I think they're real and try to swerve to miss them or something while driving.

I say neither, but I've studied both phenomena my whole life. No kidding either! I was checking out serious books on the paranormal when I was six. I laughed at my sisters for going to the kids' section, saying they were "such babies." Both fascinate me, and I have no fear of either. In fact, I'd love to live in a haunted house again (I grew up in one).

Same here (love the subject & live in a haunted house) aliens have never interested me as much as ghosts, but now i'm starting to get more into aliens too.
Aren't ghost books the best?

Ghosts? They do not bother me too often. They're more afraid of you than you are of them.
Aliens? Sorry, I've never seen one. For all I know, they're quite pretty and nice and more likely to shoot me with perfume than with a nuclear accelerator ray.
But... Alien ghosts?? The ghosts of aliens? Now, those could be creepy.

The unknown is always frightening, but sometimes the known can be terrifying. Humans are the scariest people, and so what if aliens decide that we should get a taste of our own medicine?

I'm not particularly scared of either. I believe beyond a doubt that there's life on other planets, but I'm not afraid of it. *shrug* As for ghosts, I've seen what I thought were ghosts, and they never frightened me; they just made me curious. I believe that ghosts aren't actually "spirits," but something more akin to an energy signature left behind by a person who has passed on. Nothing scary about that.
However, I did see a show about ghosts once that unnerved me, and I've never been quite sure what to make of it. There was a family who lived with a poltergeist; supposedly the spirit of a young girl. On this show, they showed video footage of an attack by this ghost where she left bloody claw marks across a man's chest. Could it have been faked? Yeah, of course. It was filmed by paranormal investigators, and they, naturally, have an agenda--to prove that ghost phenomenon is real. But still, it gave me the creeps.

gosts nope, not scared - wish i could talk with more of them..
aliens... yeh - in a way. cause they are not human, and thus are not able to be seen in the context of humanity - as such they are harder to grasp and understand, so from an ignorance of what makes them do what they do - yeh.. i guess they scare me. thought it is the fear of not understanding them rather than them as an entity - ya know?

Well I've never been scared of aliens, but ghosts unnerve me a bit. I guess it's the whole unknown thing that scares me, although aliens can be said to be unknown, but I've never been scared of them, just curious. I guess ghosts are somewhat frightening because growing up I was taught they were scary. Ghosts absolutely fascinate me but scare me all at the same time, it's really annoying because I want to be a paranormal investigator, even if it's just a hobby type thing.

Aliens definately! Not that I'm really scared, but I am wary of them, most definately. I mean, what ever makes us think that they have good intentions for us? Granted, I think with all the alien abduction stories it's much akin to how we tag and release wild animals on the brink of extinction...

All I have to do is watch a show about aliens at night and there's no going outside for me! I think they spook me so much because of the "taking people" thing. I don't wish to be away from my family and I don't wish to be alone. I'm kinda freaked out by the whole traveling thing anyway. I very rarely take a vacation. But I'm more terrified that there might actually be a Bigfoot somewhere. Ghosts..not a problem for me unless they were corporial, then I'd be freakin' out!

Aliens, most definitely. Ghosts fascinate me... I'd actively go out looking for one if I could and when I'm older I want to live in York because that's full of old stuff :p. I wouldn't mind meeting aliens if they were mammals, but the stereotypical alien portrayed by the media gives me the shivers.

I used to think, aliens... whats to be scared of? But, when you really think about it, it can be very scary. Imagine driving along, and you see a UFO hovering in front of you, and your abducted and have weird tests performed on you, that are painful, and by creatures you've never seen before. Would you just say "oh hi, how ya doing?" thats what i'm trying to get at. When you just think of aliens generally, no, it doesn't seem scary to me either.
It's the same with ghosts, a lot of people (including me) can say, i'm not scared of ghosts they can't hurt you, and i love ghosts!! But, put in a very old building with no lights and lots of noises on your own that you know theres been murders and executions there, would you be scared?

aliens - im excited about them! hollywood needs to make money so it makes it off of big bad yicky aliens ripping human guts out... i dont think that aliens that one day may meet us will be so evil & Imperialistic. If anything, im frightened of humanity's reaction to such an event... can we say - paranoia?

Ok I just want to help enlighten some people out there. I don't mean to offend any body but I hear this on the news dealing with people and on t.v. dealing with aliens. people are not "abducted" by aliens. Grown people are not " abducted" by other people. I laugh every time I time I hear this. This is why.
Kidnaping and Abdution are not interchangeable. Belive it or not but the tearm "Abduction" means - "a minor taken against the parents consent for the pourpose of marrage". "Kidnaping" means- " a person that has ben taken against their will." I know it dosen't make sense it should be the other way around but in the Statutes and criminal codes book in my state give thoes as the deffenitions. And I had an instructor at the academy drill that into us, because it could mean the diffrence between somebody getting away with a crime. Or going to jail, all beacuse in my police report I put the wrong term and the lawyers found it. Sorry I just had to say something.
As far as whats scarrier. I would say either one standing at the foot of my bed in the middle of the night would pretty much make me want to be any where else.

I voted ghosts! Only because I've only had experiences with ghosts. When I was about 10 we lived in a house in Van Nuys, CA that I swear was haunted. Some nights, when I would feel especially scared in my room at night, both of the shades on my windows would just flip up and open (the roller kind of shades). It freaked me out so bad that I would only sleep on the couch until we moved.
I do believe there are non malevolent ghosts as well. I think it would be fine to have experiences with them, maybe send them to the light or something, hehe.

Ghosts, certainly.
An alien could very well be reasonable, or malevolent, but it's something easy to get a handle on. Just folks from another world.
A ghost is one of us, in undead, creepy form. Makes me uncomfortable.
I prefer dead things to stay that way indefinately.

I used to be afraid of both, but then I discited that Ghosts are what I fear, if I know that it is a kind spirit than that is ok, but when I have that sinking feeling in my gut that tells me to run, that is when I'm afraid! I live in an old farm house and I know that it is haunted, that didn't scare me when I was litte but lately my cats have been freaking out at the walls and doors, with their eyes bulging, and the dogs would just bark and bark at the same wall, that is pretty scary! I'm not one to get over exicted but when all of my animals are freaking out I get freaked out! (All of them have never done this before) And as far as Aliens go......well have any of you seen Signs with Mel Gibson? Yhea I would just keep a water gun on me! HA! _firedevil

I picked aliens. I've dealt with ghosts my whole life. I started seeing and feeling them as a child. There is just something about aliens though that give me the heebie geebies. The things humans do to each other and the world around them. Its frightening. Cold... cruel... calculating... zealots... true believers... maniacs... idiots and fools. All things human and many time inhumane. Yes I'm more frightened of any human then a ghost or an alien or an animal. Humans are not to be trusted. Animals have not the talent to do harm and evil that humans have nutured within themselves from our beginnings to this present day. We have the potential to distroy the world. and eventually we will. I know of no other species in history that can make this claim. And we're proud of it to boot. Yes I'm frightened. Becuase I'm also a human. :ggrief:

I voted both. If aliens have tech to come lightyears across space to earth, then they certainly have the tech to blow the planet to kingdom come or worse. And Ghosts? Does anyone in here honestly know the full potential of a disembodied spirit? I don't presume to know about something I have yet to become.
I don't worry about either of them. If nothin' really bad has happened, then it probably won't in my lifetime. It's the potential unknown that scares the bejezus out of me.

I've encountered many things that are paranormal: ghosts, poltergeists(yes there is a difference), and aliens.
Depends on what kind of alien as to whether or not I would be afraid. The lizzies would scare the crap out of me. The grays are pretty scarey too. The Pleaideans are pretty cool, I think.
I've encountered ghosts and poltergeists many times. I am not afraid, but don't have any interest in playing around with them. If I had lived in a haunted place, I would move, unless I could excorsize the place sufficiently. Where I live now, used to be haunted. It was unsettling, but I discovered that a few house cleansing and it/they were gone.
So, I would have to say aliens scarier than ghosts, but I agree with many others who said people.....particulary G.W.Bush and his Neo-Conservative-Born-Again-Christians frighten me the most.

Aliens definately, I belive ive had experiences with them, I havent remembered them though. When I was a kid, one of my REAL clear childhood memories, was that of an alien/ufo sighting type show, it was on, I was interested, so I watched... This was when I saw the first face of a "grey" ever, it hit me like ton of bricks, an overwhelming irrational fear came over me, intense feelings of dread and paranoia. It freaked me out, still does thinking about it. Growing up I had much difficulty sleeping, even before I knew of these "entities"... *Suppresed Memories...*

*sighs* I'm pretty sure I've been abducted by the Greys, and they scare me.
The spirits I've met have been...while not always human...on the nice side. So the aliens scare me more, if I'm right about them having abducted me they have superior power and I don't have a clue what their agenda is. Not knowing is what makes something the scariest. For me anyway.

Ghosts scare me a bit, although I'm not sure about how much I believe in them (I think it's probably just denial because I'm frightened).
I voted ghosts, but maybe when I really think about it there isn't any reason to be afraid of either aliens or ghosts. My biggest fear is people, but when it comes to the poll I'm really not sure. Maybe I should have considered my answer a bit more before voting.

I'm not so sure if aliens are so different from ghosts in that they might not always be physical with the same density that we are physical.
I chose equally frightening because it can be difficult to know their intent. Ghosts can be disruptive if they attach to you looking for energy or comfort.

I once saw & was terrified by a ghost in my room when I was in the summer between 1st & 2nd grades - but I ALSO saw A HUNK OF JUNK floating over my head (again in the summer) when I was 29 (it was 10 years ago) in Sullivan Cty., PA. They were BOTH pretty gruesome to confront in person!!!!! :holycow: :yikes: :woah: :shaker: :hairred: :lookaroun :jawdrop: :awilly: :hairraise :foh: :ahhhh: :blushake: :bug: :spaceman: :ghost: :ghostie:

This is tough.
My encounters with ghosts have all been rather benign ... non-threatening and not scary. I've never had an alien encounter, so it's difficult to be afraid of them.
On the other hand, I do believe aliens exist and I do believe they are much smarter and more advanced than we are. The idea that they experiment on us is scary, but it's the sort of thing you think will never happen to you. Ghosts can also be threatening and terrifying ...
I'm stumped with this one!

Neither. But I believe you should be cautious with both.
When I was nine my father and I saw a UFO in West Seattle. It changed my view of things after that. I believe in aliens-- I don't think we are alone in this universe...to think that is insane to me! With so many stars, galaxies...math and such as already calculated to be alone in the universe is not likely.
I have never been abducted though.
Ghosts...not so afraid of them either-- in general. Only if I saw a gorly, pissed off one.

Neither. I embrace the dead and well aliens, I am not real sure about their existance anyway.

I've never been afraid for myself. But some person I care about being messed with and me unable to help fills me with terror.

"Aliens" and "ghosts" do not frighten me. Well, I like to say they don't, because I don't believe they do. They are very much real, but are very much like you and me, except a ghost does not have a physical body, but something more along the lines of a plasmic one, while Aliens just have different shaped ones. What is there to fear when we are capable of everything they are?
