I was just watching tv and on the news they said that many counties in the country are going to celebrated Halloween on Saturday instead of Sunday, because many are bothered by the fact that Halloween falls on the "Lords Day" this year. What do you guys think? Personally, I say, leave it as it is, if you don't agree don't participate!

I say, other people have their beliefs too. Just because your christian, doesn't mean you get reign over the holidays. Sunday it is! :D

Well, I myself am celebrating the entire week, and I dont care if people have a problem with it. I mean do they ever get bothered by the fact that there holidays are the only ones on the calander? I don't think so.

I am celebrating all weekend as well. Saturday is the party and Sunday is Samhain......Nascar is running for the first time on Samhain this year....gotta love that.
I would love to try to conjour up the spirits of the drivers who have passed over the years.

_vb_ Does this mean we get to go trick-or-treating on both nights??? _vb_

I live in a rural area, and have never, ever had any visitors on Halloween.
So, I take the goblins to a nearby historical neighborhood, where a few semi-famous authors live. They always have the coolest, spookiest houses.

I don't know if the kids night out is Saturday yet...but since I'll be celebrating all weekend, it would work into my plans.

My sis and her hubby celebrated early--lol. They went to a costume party where the theme was Monty Python's In Search of the Holy Grail. He had the bunny on his shoulder, and fake blood all over his neck, and my sis was the Queen of the Castle Anthrax. (starts singing :spam: :spam: :spam: :spam: :spam: :spam: :spam: :spam: ) :p

But I plan to celebrate on Sunday...I don't care what anyone else thinks...though celebrating on a Saturday would make more sense, especially for the part animals _happydanc

I'm not surprised. Many Christian communities haven't taken the time to research Halloween and the origins or meanings of the practices, so they see it as a demonic holiday, or at best strictly secular. If they'd take the time to read up on it & educate themselves, they'd learn that Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve, and is otherwise known as "All Souls Eve" followed by All Saints Day on 11/1.

I, personally, am celebrating both nights...with a party on 10/30 and a small private ritual on 10/31 (yes..I know..."real" Samhain isn't until later, but I don't care! lol)

I'd say have it on Sunday, that's the day it falls on. But I haven't been able to find out anything about when the "official" trick or treating night will be. I'd hate to not have stuff ready for the Sat night, if that's when little ones come around, but I sure DO NOT want to do it both nights. Candy is expensive.

Wish the city would make an announcement or something.

From a discussion on another board I'm on: Bible belt communities to change Halloween (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=13&u=/ap/20041015/ap_on_re_us/halloween_on_the_sabbath)

And a quote from that link:

"You just don't do it on Sunday," said Sandra Hulsey of Greenville, Ga. "That's Christ's day. You go to church on Sunday, you don't go out and celebrate the devil. That'll confuse a child."

Riiiight. Because making it okay to celebrate the devil every *other* day won't confuse them at all.

What's really baffling (or maybe not so baffling if you consider how ignorant people are so content to be) is that it can be very much a Christian event (if you don't consider the Pagan influences). It really became, to Catholics, all about how to stay out of Hell.

In the Catholic tradition*, it's the first of the "Three Days of the Dead" - Hallowe'en (All Hallow's Eve) focuses on the souls in Hell, hence the focus on ghosts, ghouls, demons, whatever. *All Hallows (otherwise called "All Saint's Day") on November 1 is about the souls that have made it to Heaven, and All Souls Day on November 2 is about praying for those souls in Purgatory (a fairly uniquely Catholic concept).

*-Info verified with a devout and very strict Catholic friend.
Edited to fix the link, 'cause I did it backwards. *slaps forehead*

I know. I mean, they already have their own calendar with all their holidays (and a few Jewish holidays and no Muslim holidays!) why should they complain? I think we should go an ask them...

Now that I think about it... I want to have a party on Saturday... and Sunday.:D No trick-or-treating for me b/c I don't feel like it and I don't eat a lot of candy anway. I think I'm going to spend these days with a few of my friends and simply enjoy the atmosphere.

It sucks that some of you don't get to celebrate by trick-or-treating b/c of religious fundamentalists. That really sux...

I think the idea of moving it is rediculous! Once in my life I've seen Halloween moved to a different day (I was in 3rd grade and there was a blizzard on Halloween so we moved the day of trick or treating to November 15 for our town.)

I mean seriously; most people (Non Pagan) celebrate Halloween as nothing more than dressing up and going and getting free candy... I grew up in a Lutheran church and never heard of "All saints Day" either... so I guess that's just their poragative.

I personally will be celebrating on Sunday :D

I wonder if some churches are having Halloween parties. My grandfather who was once apart of the church (now deceased) told me that Halloween is just for kids to dress up and have candy. He was a deacon in the church. I think now that he's in the spirit world watching me and my religious studies, he may know better now. :hahugh:
