I posted this in the books forum, but I thought I'd try here, as well...

Can anyone recommend some good beginner's books on Asatru or heathenry?
I'm right in the middle of the "Poetic Edda," but what else should I read? There are so many Norse mythology books, I think I have those covered. Now, I'm looking for how the religion is practiced today. I'd like to learn about blots, sumbels, troths, etc. I'm limited on funds, so I wanted some recommendations before I buy some crappy book!
TIA!

go to Northvegr.org and print out The Northern Way, thats a great source of info on Heithni, the Eddas, Sagas and myths are all good info as well but if you want to learn it in the "flesh", get The Northern Way and try to find some kindreds around you and meet them.

One book I would recomend would be Ed Fitch's "The Rites of Odin"

Hey Mjollnir, would you be able to e-mail it to me, too. I haven't been able to find a good book of any kind on Asatru and I've heard that The Northern Way is good. It would be greatly appreciated, and I believe my e-mail is in my profile.

www.thetroth.org is a good site. I know it's not Nordic, per se, but I enjoy the Kalevala. It's a Finnish epic, but it's also very good. And, like Wulf said, 'The Rites of Odin.' Oh, and read Beowolf, just for good measure. ;)

I've read 'Rites of Odin' by Ed Fitch. Not overly impressed with it, to be honest. Good intro book though.

Someone earlier mentioned this book, but didn't give it a good review. Maybe I'll get it, since it's good for an intro.

I prefer Freya Aswynn's writing.
Just skip DJ Conway's 'Norse Magic'. It is quite literally the exact copy of her 'Celtic Magic' book, word for word, in every ritual. The only difference are the names.

I can't stand Aswynn.
She "decided", in her northern magic & mysteries book, that "England" came from "Ing-Land"
That alone was enough to make me put the book down and question the rest of her theories.

Fair enough. :)

If you can still find a copy, Kveldulf Gundarsson's Teutonic Religion is probably the most definitive book out there on the practice of the Northern Ways. You might be able to find a used copy at amazon.com, or you might try Runa Raven Press (give it a google, but it's probably runaraven.com or .org). The general complaint from most Asatruar about Ed Fitch's Rites of Odin is that the author is wiccan. As mentioned earlier, http://northvegr.org is one of the best sites out there for the Lore; and http://irminsul.org is the place to go for links, including those to kindreds & groups in your area. Good luck.
