View Full Version : Slugs

My garden is quite boggy at times and tends to attract nearly every slug in southern England. I find it incredibly difficult to grow my herbs in it. I have tried gravel around the pot, tubs of beer and have even collected them up (I got 73 one night) and slung them over next door's garden.

Has anyone any other suggestions (for the safety of my chamomile which they find particulary delicious)

Blessings

Slugs can be quite a problem. There are a few more things that you can try.
Since the gravel didn't work, this might not either... smash some egg shells and put them in the soil, but don't crush them too fine. Like the gravel theory, the slugs won't like the sharp points of the egg shells and won't crawl over them.
Powdered ginger is a natural repellent.
Copper wire placed in a circle around the pot or in the soil around the plant gives the slug a gentle shock, and you bet they won't come back after that!
Good Luck!

Hi all!
Try a ring of salt around the area. Not in the soil, but around the bed.Slugs hate the stuff, kills 'em dead.As a kid,my brothers used to pour salt on the occasional slug, they foam up an ugly green color and die.So if salt is in their way, they'll turn around.

That was my solution...I didnt know if anyone would want to hurt the slugs.

Like ew says, sometimes you have to do a little harm...

Hi all!
It doesn't seem to hurt them.I put a ring of salt around my cat's outdoor bowl in the summer. They just don't mess with it.You don't have to pour it on a slug unless you just feel like grossing people out.Laundry detergent works too.I'd just be careful with plants. You don't want the salt in the soil.

Sandpaper. Put it around the edges of the beds. It cuts them when the crawl on it. I have a friend who has a cabinet shop and he saves the worn-out sandpaper belts for me. Works like a charm! I kinda miss picking them off and drowning them in soapy water though, I like the way they SCREAM before they die!

Planting sage around your garden can help to repel them as well.

A very good way to control slugs is to put stale beer
in containers that slugs can access around your garden.
It is irresistible to them, and they die drunk. :bigredgri

In the interest of our mother - please be careful when adding any chemicals in your garden. I am specifically concerned with putting laundry detergent on the soil. Depending on the type of detergent, there can be several chemicals that are detrimental to the plant and the soil. I use diatomaceous earth - a powder made from the dried shells of microscopic marine animals. It works great but it needs to be reapplied after rain. Again - please be careful with the Earth. The corporations who promote a "weed free garden" or a "putting green perfect" lawn are concerned only with their bottom line and not with the stewardship of the planet. Many good organic gardening books are available and I suppose their are organic gardening sites on the web as well. "The earth is our mother - we must take care of her....."

If you have fishtank with live feeders, they love slugs...I have a tank full of bluegils caught by the neighbor kids and they just love nightcrawlers behemoths and slugs...just my 2 cents worth...
