Alright, I started my own onsite PC repair service. I got a cell phone, biz license, and biz cards I've been handing out. However, no calls and I get a feeling that I may have wasted $700+ for all of it. I need motivation to keep this going aka get first client.

With IT and psych fields as they are, I can't find a job so I have to do this.

Starting a new business is so tough. Do you have some friends or family members you have done work for? If so have them start spreading the word if they liked your work. Sometimes word of mouth can make a new business get off the ground quicker. Also check to make sure your prices are competetive with other PC repair shops locally. I would suggest having a friend call around for you with a PC problem question to do that. Possibly make a flier describing the services you offer and distribute them to local businesses you think would possibly need your services in the future. If you were to come across someone while doing that that has a problem offer to take a look at it, tell them what you think maybe the problem and shoot them a 'special' price for doing it. Don't make it too low or they will think you are desperate. You don't want them to think that.

I worked with an ex-boyfriend in his locksmith business for several years. It was very hard to get established especially with competition. Some of his first customers that became repeat customers he gave a discount to for their loyalty. And they were some of his best advertisement. We also did the flier thing at vehicle auctions and other similar things and to businesses. I'm not sure how much it would cost now, but we also got a bulk mailing permit once or twice a year to send fliers out that way. We networked as much as we could, meeting business owners, police officers and such, giving them our business cards so they would think of us whenever they found someone locked out of their vehicles. We picked up some cheap jackets, hats and coats and had the company name, logo and phone number embroideried on them and wore those out in public too. There are all kinds of ways to get your name out there and you may think of some we didn't.

I rambled on a bit here, but hopefully you can use some of these ideas with your business. I took a PC repair course, mostly so I could fix my own PC, but I have been seriously considering starting my own business since I usually have at least one PC at my house a week from friends or family or friends' friends. Alas where I live you see a PC repair shop on every corner.

Good luck with your business. I'm sending you tons of positive, get-that-first-client-who tells-everyone-you-are-a-computer-whiz energy!

Thanks for the tips.

There are several PC repair shops but they charge way too much and several lack the proper skills or try to push badly made parts onto people. I have been giving cards to biz owners etc but nothing yet. I really don't have money for fliers since I need that for car payment. Maybe something will happen.
