This was brought up on my pregnancy board on ivillage. Someone asked if anyone believed a theory about the full moon having effects on a woman to start her labor. I'm almost 38 weeks and I'd love it if this were true since according to the OB I'm read to go any second (my body is progressing that way). Does anyone have any knowledge or opinions on this?

I've heard our hospital (and those by others) say they usually have an influx of deliveries on full moons, I just wonder what the reason is for it.

I delivered 1 day before the full moon....does that count?

Tides can and do afect the tides of the body. The woman's natural monthly cycle is on a lunar schedule. Monthly full moon, monthly periods. We are very connected to the moon.

i read about 5 yrs ago that someone took a look at a large number of birth and the time they happened at and found it was statistically more likely to give birth during the waning phase of the moon than any other time. i read that in the magazine compleat mother

more significant is the fact that science still doesnt know exactly what starts labour :) i like when science is humbled by simple things :D

I couldnt tell ya, nothing made a difference when it came to my babies, they wanted to stay put, woudn't budge!!! I was induced with both of them, after many failed attempts to naturally induce both

I haven't experienced more births during the full moon and a Danish study done on that very subject concluded that there are not more births at full moon than any other time of the month.
However- at the new moon, there is an increase in births starting with the water breaking (most births start with contractions and then the water breaks later).

I don't know, but it would be nice! I'm almost 39 weeks and the baby's taking her sweet ol' time getting ready. My doctor made a joke this morning about her waiting for the full moon.

Yes, me too! I was actually quite surprised by it..... maybe because you always hear about full moon and birth- and then it turns out to be the other way round :D

When I was at my OB appt yesterday she said there are 4 of us ready to pop any minute. She said she wouldn't be suprised if we all go on the full moon. LOL

I have been watching this phenomenon for nearly five years and I have notciced that while the full moon brings out the wierd people, and the bizzaire happenings, it doesn't bring out the babies.

I see more baby booms just after a drop in barometric preaasure then any one external occurence.

I heard that the full moon was supposed to influence when babies are born as well. I went over due with both kiddos andI gave birth to both of my childern durring a new moon. Maybe it is just a coincidence? And they were both born on holidays as well! I did notice with my youngest that labour and delievery was very busy. I got the last birthing room when I got admitted and had to wait a couple of hours for a bed in the maternity ward. The same doctor was on call all weekend......I don't think that the poor man got a wink of sleep! lol.
Blessings to all you expectant moms here at MW! I hope that all goes well for everyone and both the moms and the babies are all happy and healthy! :D
