Re: Oberon Zell's non-involvement in the current Green Egg crisis

The Ides of August, 2001

Recently, the Church of All Worlds Board of Directors suspended publication of Green Egg, its renowned international magazine, and dismissed its current Publisher and Editor because of chronic financial problems and an enormous debt. In spite of the heroic efforts of the Green Egg staff and many friends and supporters, frequent fund-raising efforts, and huge patience on the part of the CAW BoD, these problems continued to worsen. Increasing difficulty paying creditors is among the serious problems the magazine's staff and the CAW BoD had to face. Oberon, as the magazine's founder, is being frequently asked about the crisis. Unfortunately, he has had little access to information about the current situation, nor any ability to influence it.

Although it is not common knowledge, Oberon's official involvement with Green Egg ended five years ago; the current difficulties arose long after he was removed as Publisher. Because all concerned felt that airing the details of his removal as Publisher would adversely affect the magazine, Oberon was asked not to discuss the matter publicly. Since then Oberon continued to support the magazine by allowing his name to remain on the masthead as "Publisher Emeritus," and by writing his columns and articles.

People all over the world associate Oberon Zell with Green Egg, one of the most highly-praised and universally-respected Pagan publications of all time. Dozens of books credit Green Egg as a primary catalyst in the early coalescence of the Neo-Pagan community, and name Oberon as its creator and primary influence. After founding Green Egg in 1968, Oberon published 116 issues over 28 years. For much of that time he volunteered his time and energy, building it from a single dittoed sheet to an award-winning 70+ page newsstand magazine with no outside funding. Green Egg eventually supported a part-time staff and a well-equipped office.

Oberon's guiding influence over Green Egg ended abruptly in September of 1996 when he was involuntarily removed from all decision-making power by the Church of All Worlds Board of Directors, most of whom were at that time also members of the Green Egg staff (the Minutes of that BoD meeting have never been released). Oberon's position of Publisher was assumed by the newly-elected President of the Board, and Oberon was handed the "honorary" title of "Publisher Emeritus," with no authority over any aspect of the magazine. The CAW President/GE Publisher and most of that staff later resigned from the magazine in favor of the current Publisher, recently dismissed. The Editor remained throughout the transitional period until she too was recently dismissed.

Our hope would be that out of the current ashes of the Green Egg, a new Green Egg may be born that rests on a kinder and more responsible foundation. We hope that such a new Green Egg will honor its Founder. If it cannot do so, perhaps it should find another name; for Oberon's name and Green Egg's are forever linked in the minds of Pagans throughout the world. Oberon is satisfied with much of the quality and content of the magazine since he was ousted from the role of Publisher. Yet it is acutely painful to him that the magazine he founded has now become a source of financial embarrassment and conflict in the Pagan community. He remains deeply wounded and grieved by the manner of his removal, and estranged from the people who effected it.

We sincerely hope that the Church that took over the magazine from its Founder will be financially responsible to its vendors, investors and subscribers. And finally, we hope that people can pull together in this time of painful reappraisal and learn from all the mistakes that have been made.

Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart

P.S: Oberon would deeply appreciate hearing from any Green Egg readers of how the magazine he created, and the things he wrote in it, touched your lives. Perhaps a collection of such little "testimonials" might someday even be published. Please send your notes to: Oberon@gaea.ws
(If you do not want your comments to be possibly reprinted, please so indicate.)

Woah, heavy issue, Dria. I had NO idea that any of this happened -- about the involuntary removal part. I did hear recently (probably from this board! :)) that Green Egg was ending publishing.

*sigh*

Have you heard any more about this? And where did you find this statement?

I didn't get the point of this one the first time it was posted. I mean, it wasn't a happy thing to happen, but are we supposed to do? Praise this guy because he didn't cause trouble before but not admits the stuff that happened and his non-involvement? It mentions a church that took over the zine, so is it being published again? The website for the zine is gone, even tho CAWeb (presumably the church that took over) links to it....

who pesevered writing about pagan issues and concerns for many years for an organisation that tossed him out without so much as a by your leave . Green Egg Magazine was around before there was an ONLINE to be an ONLINE PAGAN. For along time it was the only place you could go and read things that pertained to being pagan . Some of you are so young I am sure this is well before your time , and possibly it makes no difference to you, But he IS VERY WELL KNOWN among the older and more experienced pagan community as someone to be respected , for many reasons .
Oberon Zell made a great deal of difference to to a great many people who were out there alone and without A NET so to speak .....
and all we are being asked to do is to let him know what a difference he made, so I guess the younger of you might not be able extrapolate that into anything you might be grateful for .
I think will just send along an email as a copy of this post.

Well, good for him. Maybe you're right on the age thing. I've never seen Green Egg let alone read it. This gentleman, whoever he is, is no one I know , and his situation is not one I can fix. At least I know what the deal is now.

The other question remains - is it in publication again yet?

I got this from one of the many Pagan lists I'm on (probably W.A.R.D.). And after reading it, it seems to me that the initial reason for this was that 'everyone' was asking him what was going on when he had no control over what was happening (re. the first paragraph). In dealing with the ensuing(sp?) emails, etc. I'm sure he started feeling a little under-appreciated (which is probably the reason that pushed the family to write this on his behalf).

I won't go into his contributions to the Pagan community but he's been around for quite awhile now.

I haven't heard anything else about this yet but if I do, I'll be sure to post it.

Blessings...

Age doesn't mean that one is completely ignorant of the happenings of the Pagan Community... I am younger than Willow, but I know quite a bit about Oberon and Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart. (Yes that is their last name now.) They met at an Aquarius Rising festival hosted by Llewellyn books, and Oberon (then Otter) was a speaker. Morning Glory was married at the time that they met. They knew at first sight that they were to be together. Since then, they have traveled the country, made unicorns which were later sold to Ringling Bros., and reconstructed the Etruscan mysteries among many many other things. Oberon was one of the founders of the Church of All Worlds. And for the record, this is not the first time that this has happened to Green Egg, and I am sure that it will return at some point in time.

I hope that I have proved my point.

You have to remember, too, that not everybody follows certain people or even certain principals. I don't read the magazine; never have; never plan to ~ it doesn't "do" anything for me. I had to have someone tell me who Oberon Zell was 7 years ago, because I'd never heard of him, and at that point I'd been Pagan for over 6 years. It all goes to show it depends on what you follow, who you follow, and what you, personally, care about. We're all different. We all have different viewpoints. We all have different interests. Just because someone doesn't know or understand the same people or things that you do, that doesn't make them weak or ignorant ~ and age has nothing to do with it. Period.
