View Full Version : Do Not Microwave Jawbreakers

Ok, I saw a Mythbusters episode that jawbreakers can explode when heated. And, being incredibly stupid and incredibly curious, I decided to try it out. I heated a Jawbreaker for about 3 minnutes. I took it out of the microwave and accidentally dropped the jawbreaker onto the counter. It was a drop of about two or three inches. I hadnt intended to drop it yet, but it did infact explode. Fortuneately Im not TOTALLY stupid and I had a pair of welding gloves on with a sweatshirt. So the gloves got a little sticky and I have a few scorch marks on my sweatshirt plus a tiny little spatter on my cheek but nothing majorly serious. Now that was a drop of only a few inches, immagine a kid biting into it.
So, people with kids, DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS MICROWAVE ANY JAWBREAKERS that they get on hallow'een.
Jawbreakers are made of layers of sugar and the different layers conduct heat differently. So the core of the jawbreaker will melt and expand, making a miniature bomb, but the shell wont break. When force is applied to the shell, enough to break it, the force explodes outwards in a spray of molten sugar. Molten sugar does NOT cool down and will retain heat for a long time so its basically like napalm on your skin and can cause extremely painful burns.
So if your kid wants to heat up a jawbreaker, sit it on the counter for a little bit.
Sorry :) Had to post this because it seems logical to microwave a jawbreaker to heat it up and on the Mythbusters show, they showed clips from news stories about kids who had actually done it without knowing and had gotten some nasty looking burns. So just thought people here might find it usefull with Hallow'een comming up.

Um.
Who heats JawBreakers up exactly ? I've never ever heard of anyone doing it.
But, it's interesting to know. Glad you tried it, now I don't have to :p :D.
Did you see the thing on MTV where they did the metal in the microwave ? And it's supposedly doesn't explode, but I'm not taking chances.

Now THAT ive done :) If its only in there for a few seconds, nothing really bad happens. It can damage the microwave or warp the metal. I believe that aluminum foil will actually melt though Ive never tried it. Youll get ALOT of sparks with metal in the mircowave. But your more likely to damage the microwave to the point where it shuts off than cause an explosion. A sealed tin can might explode if left in there long enough though.

You can heat liquid in the microwave, but you should put a wooden skewer or spoon or something in the container when you do. That gives the water something to bubble around when it boils. Otherwise it super-heats the water and will suddenly boil like mad if you shake the container, spill it on yourself, or add something to it like a teabag or spoon or whatever. Good way to get 3rd degree burns.

 Sounds like the type of thing i'd do.
If you want to explode something in the microwave, then zap eggs.
It you want to explode the microwave itself, zap cd's. It looks purdy, but the following sparks and boom are generally a bad sign.

i always put water in the microwave, just never long enough to make it dangerous. only for 45 seconds to a minute, 2 minutes if its a lot of water or a really old microwave. I have put foil in the microwave before. the microwave started to smoke a little... wrap potatoes in foil when baking them in a regular oven, if the oven doesn't work and you are forced to use the microwave, take the foil off first.

lol - i'm guessing just to see if it's true they explode ;) curiousity is a terrible thing to waste. (my cousins would microwave just about EVERYTHING to see what would happen... jawbreakers are tame compared to what i've seen. ew. and they are the ones that taught me you CANNOT microwave metal... heh. and then proceeded to SHOW me why. i'm surprised we lived through those crazy summer days at their house ;))

Curiosity. Thats how the greatest advances have been made. Ever think about milk? Ever wonder who the FIRST guy was, when he looked at a cow udder and went "Hmmm...". The Wright Brothers did something people thought was TOTALLY stupid. Granted nuking jawbreakers probably wont advance humanity that much, but it satisfies curiosity :)

Oh my Gods that is so coo- I mean, dangerous! I would never, ever do something like that. :halohead:
Definitely not something I would ever tell my husband about. He's too much of an 8 year-old.
