Does everyone have an altar that is always set up? Any good ideas for ones that you can tear down easily? My family does not know I am wiccan and when they come by I need to be able to put it away,But would prefer to keep it out daily for myself.

Love and Light,

A dresser works fine. Just save the bottom drawer for the stuff when the family comes to visit.

I had a nice trunk that I used for my altar and supplies for a long time. The bonus was it traveled well and had a lock for when I was visiting my nosy mother.

Thanks, I am going to work on that. The only dresser I have is a really tall one, so I don't think that will work, but I think I can dig up a trunk.

you guys are the best :hehehehe:

i saw a picture of one once that was rather small and set up in a cigar box, which stayed open on top of the desk. it could be closed in case of visitors. if you're into bigger, the trunk idea is good. mine's on top of a trunk, but most of my stuff stays out all the time now, as i live alone with my cats. they rather like it... especially the fountain. :)

I have animals in the house so a take down altar is essential. I keep all of my stuff in a box which i made so it's easy to carry around. I take all of the stuff out of the box, put a cloth over it (the box) and PRESTO _wiz_ my portable take down altar :)

An altar doesn't need to be an elaborate display. Even a small space in your house for a candle, incense (if you like it), a small bowl for water or a vase of flowers can serve as a rather inconspicuous altar. Perhaps not a traditional altar, but an altar none-the-less.

Going to work on some of the ideas you have all given, I think with a little elbow grease I can take all the ideas and combine them to make a "to die for Altar". When I complete it, I will take a photo and post it so you all can see your ideas at work, thanks again.

I have a friend who purchased a rubbermade tote that fits in her trunk; she keeps all of her "goodies" in that and in her trunk; she likes to hold rituals in the mountains; so she'll carryt he tote along with her, place fabric over it and it makes a beautiful altar!! She also leaves it on display in her house much of the time!

Mine (which I am setting up tomorrow!!) is going to be this beautiful coffee table I aquired from my neighbor, and I'm going to just decorate it to look like a beautiful array of candles and such, that way no one can really question too much!!

A good friend of mine uses a make-up box. It has several individual compartments and it stays open. I use a make-up bag for keeping my stuff in--it's not hard like hers, so it's hard to turn into an altar. However, I have a small table I use for the actual altar and when I take everything off, it blends into the dorm life.

Roll top desks are wonderful for this!

Hey, for my altar I use a fold up table. I have all my stuff in my nightstand drawer. My mother wouldn't dream of looking through my stuff so I'm safe. :2G: :javaswim:

I have a large chest-of-drawers, I converted one of the drawers to an altar. Open drawer- boom! I'm ready to go. I'd like a bit of a bigger space, but right now it's just not practical. Good luck on your altar, I can't wait to see the pics!

I use a nice sewing machine table that I found in the garbage (score!). When my parents come and I have to hide my stuff, I usually put it in a rubbermaid container that I have for my altar stuff, and that goes under my couch. If you end up using something that doesn't have storage built in, keep in mind that there are boxes and closets to stash stuff in.

Hiding all my books and tarot decks, now that's a problem.

I've seen where you can buy some altars that just fold up so they'd be easy to store somewhere. But a lot of things are too small....maybe you could get a table with a little shelf on the bottom and when the family comes you could put the stuff on that shelf and cover it with a long table top. Or you could get one of those tables with wheels and just store it in your closet or whatever.

I have altars all over my house. I bless my areas of my home with candles, driftwood, seasonal things (for example, leaves right now!), rocks I picked up from special places.

Unless I'm doing something incredibly wrong....(please let me know)...I have easy access all the time. Even the computer has candles and hand made pottery and things --- things that make me feel safe, peace and calm. :)

Here is an idea I've been working on to sell. :) At Home Depot, you can find these short step stools that are just one step. The plastic step opens up on the top and you can use it for storage. You can just throw a cloth over it and create an altar. Its a pretty low altar, but if you like to sit or kneel before your altar, it would be great!
