View Full Version : Glass bottle and uses

I realize this is probably a pretty open ended question but I thought I'd ask anyways. A friend recently gave me some bath salts in a nice glass bottle. I was immediately taken with the bottle (even if the salts don't really smell  ) and emptied everything into another container so I could use the bottle for something else. I have a persistent nagging feeling I'm supposed to use the bottle for something, possibly at Samhain? but I can't figure out what. Any common rituals that use bottles, or ideas, or anything? thanks guys :)

Hmm, well aside from using them to hold pretty flowers, you could use them to contain spells. I know someone who put certain things in one bottle and buried it in the front yard. It was meant for protection.

Given your fondness for the bottle, it's obvious that you do not want to bury it in the front yard I imagine-or anywhere. Keeping it is of paramount importance, I assume. :)

You could fill it with holy water and place it upon your altar. I tend to make holy water from batches of lunar or solar water (won't get into that here and not really important to the use of a bottle), then store a few bottles away and keep one on my altar to use in various ways. I tend to replenish the supply once a month. This keeps the bottle out for you to enjoy and in a sacred space, plus gives it good functionality.

Bottles can be used as charms, in spells, rituals, and so forth. Typicall, the average bottle use in this manner is filled with herbs, possibly stones, and other interesting items that relate to the purpose. I prefer to cleanse and empower items individually rather than collective-which takes more time, but is worth it in my opinion. Then, I would place them all in the bottle (which should be cleansed before this all takes place as well) and empower it as a collective charm, ward, or what have you. Depending on the spell, the ingredients will vary and the placement of the bottle will vary. Many times burying the bottle is ideal, but there are times when not doing so is just as suitable.

Eh, don't worry about it. It's just silly karma.

A general rule of thumb: Bottles can typicall be used in almost all the same manner that boxes can, with the exception of liquids where bottles entirely rule over. So, there can be some of the most versatile tools around-which is why I grab every bottle I find.

A fun thing to do with bottles is the witchbottle. Lots of books mention it as a protective devide, but they don't go into *that* much detai. Damned fluffies. The real witchbottle is a device used to imprison the soul of a witch who is attacking someone through magic. They would take a bottle or jar (one cunning-man actually used bottles of wrought iron, which would be even more effective against magical attack) and fill it with broken glass, rusty nails, spikes, barbed wire, threads, tangled wires and things - all sharp, pointy, and nasty. Modern users may wish to add bits of broken mirror, to reflect the spell back on the person who cast it. Then fill with the urine of the afflicted person. The urine attracts the witch, because it's a link to the target, so her spirit would go into the bottle, get caught in the tangled wire and thread, and be sliced, diced, stabbed, and hacked by the broken, sharp, and pointy things. The bottle would then be sealed, put over a fire so the urine would boil, and it was then bricked up (typically in the hearth, for some reason) or buried. Modern magic-workers may do as they like.
That's about all I can come up with off the top of my head.

I have a few of the Egyptian purfume bottles that I use. I also use them for holding "holy water" and such. I have a clear one that I use as a make shift chalise. The top is to small to dip anything into it, but it has a long glass stopper that I can use to dab the items I am useing. It is great when I am useing ingredients that make a huge mess if you aren't careful. I am a major klutz half the time so it makes clean-up much easier!

Witch Bottles can also be to represent yourself. Traditionally they had faces on the front. They were filled with all sorts of sharp stuff, as well as entangling. Then place in fingernails and hair (and traditionally urine), some use a drop of blood for extra power. They were then burried under the door step, as it's unlikely to be disturbed. You could also place in the back corner of a closet, or basement... out of the way!!!

The idea is that when someone does magic against you, that magic will be fooled into thinking that the bottle is actually you, and it won't actually reach you.

I'm going to be making witch bottles in ceramics. :) But I'm still working on the historical resources.

Honestly... I think that you should ask the bottle! :)

or you could make a smoking bottle incense burner. just put a chain around the neck with a keyring on the end. the keyring can then be used to hold an incense stick over the mouth of the bottle. decorate it however you want. and it's good to drill a hole toward the bottom in the back to let fresh air in and fascilitate burning, but i'm not sure whether it's necessary or not.

That sounds interesting, I'll look into that a little more. Thanks :)

I was also going to suggest the smoking incense bottle! I made one and I just love it!!! It's a great way to keep the bottle around :D And it looks just like decoration (in case you may still be a "Closeted Witch" like me :D )

I've not heard much on Witch Bottles; but I'm definately curious now and off to do some research!

A bottle can be used in divination, too. Fill it with liquid and scry into it. You could add ink or food colouring to water and put it in the bottle. The Farrars tell how to make a scrying bottle of sorts in their 'A Witches' Bible'.
Oh, I forgot! You could also fill it up with threads of many colours. Use the bits you snip off and would otherwise toss out when sewing. Placed in the window, it will confuse and distract the Evil Eye, which will get tangled up in the threads.

:fishtank: I know some uses for a bottle but I dont know if you guys might like it.
Dark bottles are used for bindings and clear bottles for white magick, luck, spells.

To bind an enemy place a picture of the person in a dark bottle and offer it to Yemaya taking it to the sea. If no beaches around place on the freezer. For protection of an enemy write 'your wish" in a piece of parchment paper and place inside a dark bottle, dont close the bottle. Then put it on the trash so that "luck as you wish to your enemy is gone with the garbage".

Any other 'good" petitions may be offer to Yemaya who lives in the sea. You may find about this deity in books.
