How do you pronounce sabbat and Samhain? I know I sound stupid, I just don't want to sound like an idiot when I say them out loud. I'm kind of new with these words :fpeek:
I mean, I know what they are, I just want to make sure exactly how to say them. Thanks!

Samhain/Samhuinn is a Gaelic word. Samhain being the Irish, and Samhuinn the Scots Gaelic.

In the Irish it's pronounce SOW-in. In the Scots Gaelic it's SOW-vin .

I say it like how it is spelled when I'm talking to myself. But when I say it out loud to someone, I say Sow-ween. :cutie: Don't feel dumb. :)

You just had to know that the Irish 'mh' makes an English 'w' (in _some_ instances)

Actually, another question about the pronounciation.

For Samhain, is it "SOW" and is sowing seeds in the ground (sounds the same as sewing my clothes,) or "SOW" as in female pig? My guess is it's like the female pig (s-- and ow as in I just got hurt.)

i've always said it as 'sow'.
seeing as how it's 'Summer's End'... and a harvest festival... i would think 'sow', as in a female pig, makes more sense. there is some mythology to back this up too (the 'white sow'), but i have no idea how historically relevent that is.

'so', as in reaping what you so, would make no sense at all for a harvest festival.

I am curious too as to how it's pronounced....is it "sow" sounding like "sew" or "sow" sounding like the pig's sow. Hmmmm?

samhain "sowen" or "sowin" like ouh or ouch minus the "ch", en or in, like the letter N
"sowen"

ive always said 'sabbat' and 'samhain' just as theyre written. if you want me to say SOW-win, then you can write SOW-win :D. mahgjkickal pronunciation is one area where im perfectly happy to wallow in ignorance. its not like theyre particularly common words in my vernacular.

p.s. if knowing how to pronounce 'samhain' ever becomes a life or death issue for me, ill let you know.

Amusing way to put it, but the pronunciation of Samhain as SA-vin or SOW-en has nothing to do with it being mahgjicakl. It has to do with it being a word from another language. When you see for example merci beaucoup written don't you try to pronounce it correctly? Or do you actually say mer-see be-o-cup?

Since we're on the subject of pronunciation.....how about the celtic names for the god an d goddess. Celtic phonics are killing me.

Cernunos(sp?): Is the C a hard or soft? I've been saying is with a soft c.

Cerridwen: Same as above with respect to the "C". Is the "w" silent or not?
