Not to burst your bubble, but they publish practically everything they get. I'm being published by them for a 3rd time. Congrats!

So have I. But don't get too excited because all they do is keep asking you for money and its really not worth it.
Unfortunately, the fact is that in publishing, they're fairly well-known as a scam operation. Here are some good links that aspiring writers should keep in their files:
A good writer-beware site: http://www.sfwa.org/Beware/
And on poetry.com in particular (they are notorious for sucking money out of hopefuls):
http://www.windpub.com/literary.scams/ripoffs.htm
Just check out the contests you enter, and double check, especially if you're asked to submit any fees or to buy anything.

Thanks for the info!
It just occured to me that I have a bunch of writing links on my site that might help those looking for publication:
http://www.galenorn.com/teashop/default.asp?body=aslinks.htm
And there are a number of good writing sites where you can post your work in forums and critique/be critiqued. A hardcore one is www.alsopreview.com but bear in mind--there are a lot of experienced poets there and they don't spare feelings in their critiques; their focus is on the work, not on making you feel good. And there's the writer's bbs: www.writersbbs.com A less professional site but still with some potentially good feedback. Also http://www.writers-write.com (I think that's the URL) and others.
Good luck!

It is indeed true that Poetry.com is just a scam. It's actually based near where I live... they try to look like a good clean business and everything. Apparently if you order their book then your poem gets published alongside all sorts of bad crap... and the book is of terrible quality too.
Not saying your poetry is bad, though! Just try somewhere else.

I just submitted my very first manuscript today. It's for the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference at Middlebury College in Vermont. If it's chosen as part of the contest, it will be published for Houghton Mifflin's Mariner Original Paperback Line. I would also get invited to the conference in 2006.
I won't hold my breath, but those who are closest to me have been pushing me to send my writing in to ANYTHING just to get out there. They all think I have a pretty good chance. :bigredblu I'm not so confident, but I promised to try it out and see what happens. My dad gave me money for the entry fee and the postage and practically commanded me to go to the post office.
Putting together 50+ pages of poetry was difficult (I have notebooks upon notebooks of it from age 13 to now, age 30). Organizing it in some order was hard too. The biggest challenge, though, was to send it off. :thief: One of my best friends literally walked into the post office with me to make sure I wouldn't chicken out. :uhhuhuh:

yeah, a few years back they 'published' something of mine, too.
and send mailed me a letter offering to buy that book for a huge amount of money.
and after that, they offered to buy my own poem printed out and framed ( also very expensive).
if i want to print out my poem and frame it, i can do it myself for very cheap, thank you very much.

Thanks to Yasmine for the links, though.
perhaps, i should submit some of my shorter pieces of writing there to get some feedback
thanks :)

That's pretty cool, although from the other posts in this thread it doesn't sound like the best site. I've never really heard anything about it though so I have no idea.
