Wondering what you all think of the theory that Atlantis may have been the island of Thera?

Just finished a fascinating book called Unearthing Atlantis which discusses the excavation of a civilization on Thera from over 3,000 years ago. The book discusses how it fits Plato's description of atlantis, from them being advanced (indoor plumbing, batteries even), the colors of the buildings, and the location. Also described how the destruction from earthquake and volcano could have caused the events described in the bible when moses led the tribe out of egypt - the darkness, animals swarming the area, and the parting of the reed (not red) sea.

I haven't decided if I really have an opinion about it being Atlantis, but found it interesting & curious.

I think that the island was near Florida or Anartica, but I have no doubts that artifacts could have been found in different places. They had to leave after all. And spread their information somehow...

i've seen a couple of history channel programmes on this theory and given the technology of travel of the time i'd say that they make a very good case for thera as atlantis. i'd be rather more prepared to believe in a local catastrophe that plato would hear of and write about than an "island continent" located where the ocean is now miles deep, and the sinking of a major land mass to such a depth would have been a cataclysm that would have wiped out life on surrounding seacoasts on both europe and the americas and left an unmistakeable geological record for us to find and read today.

in that I think Atlantis was more of a local phenomenon. I think that the "known world" then was smaller than we imagine,.......but I also think that people traveled and brought and shared their cultures to far greater distances than is currently thought to be the case.
An island disaster even of small proportions would certainly have met the criteria for what Plato talks about ........ and the origin of the Etruscans is still not known .....

"and the origin of the Etruscans is still not known ..... "

very interesting point swannie, one i haven't seen before but if, as is likely, there were survivors they had to end up somewhere and the italian peninsula was not impossibly far even in those times.

for some of the "sudden " cultural advancements that the Etruscans had in their culture that were well developed and just "sprung from sources unkown " including magical systems and graceful clothing .... a serene and happy way of being that their neighbors could NOT understand ,and language ,which is now thought to be a possible source for celtic runes ....., also I have a personal mystery concerning the Etruscans I have not ever seen addressed anywhere ...... The Etruscans in 9000 BCE had Black Swans sacred to the Goddess Turan the Etruscan equivalent (predecessor?) of Aphrodite Venus......... which were unkown in modern Europe until they were brought back from Australia in the 1700's ......???

I do believe it was at Thera, but there are also speculations of atlantis at the antartic.

"just a question was thera part of the minoan civilization?"

they would have been part of the eastern mediterrean culture that the minoans came from and shared many elements of that culture, there was a strong sea going trade throughout the greek islands of the time and travellers and sailors do spread stories and ideas.

and swannie, if that statue is etruscan then it does argue for a possible eastern mediterranean origin for the etruscans, it's firmly in the "realist" tradition of greek sculpture that the romans later copied.

sorry swannie, when i said "if it is etruscan" i didn't intend to imply doubt of its origin or your word on it. and it is a beautiful statue in any case

and that is a lovely picture, good art, very sophisticated and i would think definitely eastern mediterranian/greek influenced.

i just realised i'd skipped over the "goddess" pic so i went back for a look, that definitely has a strong minoan look, reminescent of the "bare breasted goddess" found in minoan ruins.

Interesting thing , I did piece in the sand last week, after receiving my Reiki attunement,
This Goddess just came OUT , what do you think of her . Imagine........... past life work via art! :>

"Are you an anthropology professor ?......"

thank you for the compliment but no, i'm just a tired old gunfighter who reads a lot, never even been to college much less teach at one. interestingly your sand sculpture very closely resembles that "bare breasted goddess" statue i mentioned as a minoan relic with the bare bosom and "bell skirt".

One of the things the paleontologist mentions is the evidence of people travelling much farther distances than we originally thought possible.

The book does refer to it as a minoan civilization.

I'm emotionally partial to the idea that Atlantis was in the Atlantic, basically where Edgar Cayce indicated. This is based on nothing more than strong feelings attached to Bimini - that could be just because I grew up when the devil's triangle was a hot topic!

Cayce said that Atlantans travelled to Egypt, so maybe there was a settlement in Thera.

Actually there have been thoughts of Atlantis being what is now Cuba, it certianly fits some of the refrences made by Plato. Also I read and I think it was Ancient American magazine where they said they are finding evidence of pyramids, etc under water off the coast of Cuba. I find it intresting and have read the book Unearthing Atlantis. There are a lot of places where it said to be and I think eventually it will be found. After all we thought Troy was just a myth...
