I have a question about choosing a "magical" name. Is it wrong to choose a name that was one of a Goddess? I don't want to anger one LOL.
Blessings, Dawnseve :heybaby:

To be honest, I have no clue. However, in the christian-religion, it's an honor to be named after Mary or Joseph... so I don't see why it would be bad to have the same name as a goddess.. I may be wrong though. But then again, I know three people named Brigid, and Brigid is the name of a goddess..

I've never met anyone with the name of a goddess for a magickal name, but I think it would be alright. But I really have no idea. I'd meditate on it. :)

I have a name of a Goddess for a REAL name, and no one has seemed to mind so far. :)

It is an honor to the God/dess to name yourself after one of them. Many, many people use the names of deities...look at all the people with the name "Aine" in their screennames. It is in fact customary in some paths to take the name of your patron god or goddess. :)

My first thought was that I would never presume to give myself a Goddess's name. But then, after reading Cielly's post, I can see the other side of it. I'd have to have a really strong relationship with that particular Goddess to put her in my name, though.

It is a practice that some of my coven's kin used to follow, but the particular line I'm part of discontinued. Too many problems that could be traced back to the name. There can be some complications. It is one thing to name yourself after a Patron/Matron in the old sense of the relationship (the sense where there is a very close bond between you and him/her, not the "I like X and Y, So-n-so is the god of X and Y... etc"... I'll spare you all the long rant) because the "complications" compliment the process. You are supposed to become more like that patron, connect to that type of energy. If you aren't trying to do that, becoming particularly like a certain divinity can be a little awkward at times. Gods tend to be simplier than humans in some ways.

Just consider this. Basic magical theory: the name defines what it names. If you are naming yourself as a god or goddess, you will take on the nature of that namesake. That is one of the primary reasons for taking a name: to define yourself through it.

I thank all of you for responding. I will take into consideration all the advice given. Has anyone ever helped someone with a name? I know it's a personal thing but just wondering.

I think that is one of those things that people really can't tell you, unfortunately!

Try reading through baby name books, mythology books, or just general books on magic. Sooner or later, the name for you will "jump out at you," and you will know it is for you!

Good luck! ;)
