The New Pagans FAQ (http://www.mysticwicks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=155) contains a great deal of information regarding altars and the sabbats. Start there.

I know someone who was in a studio apartment and who wanted a fairly private place for it who put it on the top of the toilet tank.....

Really, any stable fairly flat surface can serve. If you use wall-mounted shelves, be sure they are sturdy. If using something like a bookshelf, note if the candles can burn safely if you use them.

My altar is a banquet that I got years ago at a yard sale to use as a dresser/vanity. There is storage for supplies (candles, herbs, incences, etc) and tools (candlesticks mostly- many of my tools are on display.) The main level is a great working altar and the top portion (raised on the ends) allows for three small shrines (fae, anscestral and divinity.)

I just moved into a house that has an attic so I have chosen this spot to create my own space. I just bought a wooden trunk from Walmart and it was $24. not bad for the size of it. They still have them as of this date. I was going to use a plastic storage tub before I found the trunk.

*dripping with envy* i've wanted an attic for my sacred space for as long as i can remember. :) yes, i watch charmed sometimes, when i'm in the mood for a little mindless amusement, but no i don't think they're "real," and am not try to be like them or anything. lol. i just think ascending the stairs and going into this room at the top of the house would be like going into another, higher place, and it would be a great place to practice. i could feasibly set mine up in my third bedroom and at least have a whole room set apart, but it's the guest room and i'd have to hide everything every time anyone came to visit. same for the second bedroom, or office. :/ so mine's all in my bedroom for now. it is kind of like its own space though, a little alcove between my doorway and the bathroom.

Mine is on top of a night table. And there's a little drawer underneath were I keep my extra candles, my incense packages, etc.

You can put what you'd like on it for the Sabbats. Fallen leaves, flowers, things you find in nature....

I use a big forked ash stick/stang which is representational of the male/god & female/goddess and conception, which I hang things on - feathers, crystals etc.
My candles and so forth I stick in my 'witch box' - a wooden chest which sits next to my sewing machine :D
