Are there meaning in cards beside what is written in all these learning the tarot books? I did a readding on the intent of a person and the card in the tenth position of the cross was the sun. The sun is the morning star, Lucifer, so could that suggest wicked intentions or should one only use the traditional meanings insted of the other things you can see symboligy?

I thought venus was the morning star..........

But to answere your question, you can memorize meanings, or you can read intuitivly just by saying what you see in a card.

Even if you want to interpret it as Lucifer, I would say that the child might struggle with his or her tempations...not that a child is inherently bad or wicked.

Yes, a lot more. And let me say this up front: some books are much better than others. The meanings of the cards which you inuitively come to are vastly more accurate then those in those vague new-agey books. I've never successfully done a reading based on book definitions (tried when I was starting out). And don't even think about looking at that little white book that comes in the box!!!!

Good luck on your quest!

...should one only use the traditional meanings insted of the other things you can see symboligy?Hi there, Deep! I think knowing the traditional meanings can only help you as a reader, but your intuition is important also.

When a card appears in my reading and suggests a very strong message intuitively, I think about the traditional card meaning and compare the intuitive message to it. Generally I will tell my querent, "This card traditionally means thus-and-such, but I'm getting a strong feeling of this-and-such." I let the client decide which makes more sense to them, or if both opinions make sense.

In reference to the Sun card, you could say that it usually means happiness, joy, cooperation and growth opportunity, but you're getting a strong feeling that it may mean someone has false intentions (your Lucifer idea) or that the person could easily be blinded to the truth by the intense rays of the Sun or could be facing burn-out. In effect, you are using a "reversed" meaning for that card even though it may be upright. THAT'S what intuition is all about. :)

As far as symbolism, there are quite a few books out there, and some study groups, that discuss the symbolism of the tarot in terms of the colors used, the different animals present and all of that in exhaustive detail. IMO, it can't hurt to read them but, like AnFoghlaiBanrion said, some are better than others.
