Has anyone ever had this done and what was it like? Was it easy and does it happen within a week or so? I may be pregnant and read that this is an option if you were considering abortion. I am not ready to have a child yet and may choose this option. Thoughts?

I have never had this done

I suspect that it may be a somewhat uncomfortable undertaking, as it is an induces miscarriage.

I can't help but think it will still be better than a D&E proceedure.

Please make tracks to the clinic and get this under way, do it as soon as feasable.
I'll light a candle. Hugs!

Oh thank god a response! I'm going nuts here. :awilly: Here is my problem....

Ok..so I told a little lie. I went today and got tested. I am pregnant. I was supposed to get my period Nov. 4th, 5th or 6th. I knew something was wrong last week when I got cramping and my boobs swelled and I got tested today. Problem: I leave December 1st for Australia and will not return until Dec. 19th! I need to get this done ASAP and I would JUST have enough time if I can been seen immediatly and get the drug administered. I found 2 clinics near me that say they do this type of procedure. Most sites talk about getting ultrasounds and such, but I'm not sure if you have to w/ this type of early abortion. I could work it out with my boss and all too. I just hope that the clinics would understand that this IS an emergency in my eyes. what do you think? I'm so worried. Sorry for not telling earlier. I'm kinda embarrassed....

I've PM'd you...some of this would otherwise just be TMI for all the rest of the gang

I've had one, so I can tell.

First, most clinics will not perform the abortion until the second month to third month (6-10 weeks). This is to insure that the fetus will be removed successfully (at this time, the fetus is about the size of a thumb tack with no distinguishable human charateristics, except DNA, or nervous system). The vacating of the womb is quick and reletively painless. The vaginal walls are locally numbed and dialated. Then the vacuum tube is inserted and the materials in the womb are extracted. This may or may not be done with the assistance of a sonogram, depending on regulations and doctor experience. This is also done within 3-5 minutes. The doctor will then allow you to rest for a while, and you should experience a menstration cycle of normal to heavy flow. You should be at the doctors office about 2 hours. You may have mild to heavy cramps, depending on how your body reacts to the proceedure. There should be a followup exam within 1-2 weeks to make sure everything healed correctly.

My suggestion is to try the abortion pill, it's less expensive and can be taken earlier than a medical abortion. Also, check the regulations, several states have pre-appointments that need to be made.

Umm...

The abortion pill or injection is a "medical abortion" it causes the body to miscarry the pregnancy.

The dialation and extraction is a surgical abortion...it actively removes the pregnancy.

I was told a surgical abortion was a proceedure that opened the woman's uterus to the open through a surgical incision; a medical abortion is dialation & extraction; an induced abortion is drug related with no physical inductions. The names may have changed, but that is what the medical information I still have lists.

I suppose that makes sense...although to me a D&E is a surgical proceedure because it is an invasion of the body under sterile conditions...

The first proceedure is used when they've had to remove an extrauterine pregnancy(tubal or otherwise outside the uterus) These are not viable pregnancies and left alone they can kill the mother.

I had a D&C after a missed miscarriage; don't know if that's what you're asking about though. It's the same procedure as an abortion. The RU-486 (I think that's the number) causes cramping and miscarriage. If I were faced with an unwanted pregnancy I would ask about it.

I'm thinking about you, hon.
