I have looked and can't seem to find a meaning of raven feathers. Could someone please explain the Significance of raven feathers.

Much appreciated.

Raven feathers = Raven Medicine...qualities the raven holds...

I keep a raven feather on my altar because it's one of my totems and a representation of my matron goddess, Branwen.

Raven feathers would be good for divination, clairvoyance, seeing the truth, etc. Google "raven medicine" or "raven totem" and you'll get all kinds of information!

Depending on where you live, you may want to be careful as possessing one in the United States at the very least is illegal. Not that you should throw the feather out, mind you, but be careful while you have it.

As for their significance, look up associations for the raven. They vary, and this is your best bet since you will be able to see which ones click with you and which ones do not. Common symbology is:

Shapeshifting, magic, dream work, divination, the dead, mysteries (particularly occult ones), illusions, wisdom, intelligence, curiosity, resourcefulness, adaptability, and spiritual enlightenment.

I was thinking the same thing. As far as I've researched, it's illegal to own it everywhere in the US. The same as keeping the Raven as a pet. Now, if Raven Greywind is willing to give up a feather, it might not be so bad!! Sorry Raven, I had to say it@@ :heybaby:

They are often used to represent the morrigan (Macha, Badb & Nemain) and also Odin/Woden.

I can't believe they're illegal to own in the US!

This is because ravens (and many others) are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 (http://laws.fws.gov/lawsdigest/migtrea.html).

Yeah, it's just a shame; it means people who find one by the roadside aren't allowed them, too. Not that I dont understand the need for the law, it's just a shame for everyone who ~isn't~ a poacher.

Doo doo doo doo doo... ::locks door, closes blinds, and pulls curtains together tightly::

I had no idea that they were illegal...a friend of mine gave it to me at my initiation - how/where she got it I have no idea. I'm assuming she found it.

They are illegal? Oopsie... I've got at least 10-15 of 'em... Plus a bunch of raptor feathers (vulture, owl, hawk), but I know those are a no-no. All of them were found, of course. :)

me loves feathers!

Wow, illegal? Ravens are EVERYWHERE here... can't go out the front door without seeing one! Big ones, too...

The one I have, a raven 'gave' to me. He flew up to me, walked around, dropped a feather, and flew off. It was pretty cool.

So... I should sneak my condor feather back into the zoo & toss it back in the condor exhibit from whence it came?

Are you sure it was a raven not a crow? as far as I know, crow feathers are fine.. as far as I know. Crows also have similar attributes, but not the same.. hope that helps

Believe it or not crows are considered to be 'song birds' and song bird feathers are illegal to posses.

Crows?!? In Oklahoma, there's a hunting season on crows...

So... you can shoot 'em... but ya can't take their feathers?

lol, I say keep it as a souvenir!OK... but if I "have any 'splainin' to do", I'm gonna tell 'em you said it was OK... :hehehehe:

LOL I seriously doubt anybody would go after someone for possessing a feather or two. I mean, if you were killing them off and running a black market scam I'ms ure they'ed hunt you down. But here? nah. We've got more than we have pidgeons. So I'm sure having a feather doesn't hurt anyone or get anyone in trouble. I mean, technically it's illegal to ride your bicycle on the sidewalk, but people do it constantly. *shrugs*

Well that doesn't make it ok, now does it? Hmmm?

Nah, I'm just kidding.

I don't see how anyone would even know you had the feathers...and what's wrong with picking one up if it presents itself to you? I haven't had any attacks of my conscience - as far as this is concerned, anyway!

Does anyone use the Raven feathers in spells? And if so what do you use them for?

I see them as a gift, and as a reminder of my spirituality and it's roots.

but I can't help... I don't do "spells" really. :)

I'm not much of a spell person either...actually, I don't believe I've ever done a single spell...

Anyway, I just like to have the feather on my altar because of its energy and because it reminds me of My Lady Branwen (even though it's black, but I've never seen an albino raven).

I use feathers for smudge fans (you can do this with a single feather, or by attaching several to a wand). I also occasionally use a feather to 'check' a client's aura. You do this by running the feather upward through the aura. You'll actually feel the feather meet resistance when you pass through a place with a 'glitch', then you can use the feather to 'scoop' the glitch out. In spellwork, you might use a feather to represent the element air (many people place a feather on their altar in the air direction); or, for example, in workings to make something 'lighter'; or to invoke the energies or qualities of the bird from whence came the feather.
