Maybe for some people it's true, but for the rest of us, no. :)

Welcome to MW, btw. :D

Not at all... There are many factors that tie into taking a magickal name, but there really is no formula that you have to use.

In fact, I'll make sure that I add the question of names to the New Pagans FAQ today.

There are many theories of how to use numerology to enhance taking a magical name. I prefer the idea of finding one which helps correct imbalances with the birth name and number.

I always understood, from my reading, that a magical name was something left over from times when it was necessary to keep one's real identity a secret for fear of being persecuted if not executed.

I don't have one, either. I am me. My God & my Goddess know me for who I am without a magical name.

I have never read or heard of anything that says you have to have a magickal name.. its up to each person and what they are comfortable with and whats best for their journey.. as far as i know it is more of a coven thing anyway.. I could be wrong on that since i am not in a coven but i think it is a part of a persons initiation ceremony.. i guess in a coven if you have 4 kates or 3 mary's for example it would be less confusing to use magickal names then having 3 or 4 ppl answer at once
I like the idea of having a magickal name but that is my choice..
as for the magickal name being the same number as your real name that too is a personal choice some feel you have to do it that way others dont.. I wouldnt know if my magickal name and my real name are the same number to me it doesnt matter..

What NeferSesemet said. ;) Personally, I don't even have a magical name, as I don't belong to any offline pagan communities. However, back to the subject of birth numbers and whatnot, a curious thing I found out a couple of months back...my given name (in it's entirety) adds up to my birth number. Completely coincidental, but cool nonetheless. :)

No. It is simply a numerological method to select a name for you. Some people, like myself, adore numerology (despite my hatred of math and numbers in every other sense). Other people cringe at the mention of numerology. There are many methods to discern a magical name that is right for you, and it is only a matter of finding one that suits you.

Numerology is often associated with the element of air, for it is an analytical tool, and that's why I happen to enjoy it so much. Someone like, Kay, for instance, who has a strong water influence may prefer to work with dreams to select their magical name. Of course, you could combine many efforts, as I did. I combined numerology with meditation and a few other techniques. So long as you are comfortable with the procedure and feel it is the best technique for you, you will do fine.

My coven wants me to have one. I say Raven (my birth name) is magical enough. I am not using one. It just feels silly to me - personally, not for other people- but then I am very attached to my name.

For my name it was just a matter of personal preference.
There are no strict guidelines for choosing a name, or a path for that matter.
It's all in how you feel and what is right for you.
Just is just my opinion.

Raven:

There are many reasons to use a magical name. It can be a use name where you use it to hide your legal name. It can be a spiritual name, where it represents a rebirth and spiritual goals. It can be a magical name where it is intended to serve a magical purpose.

Most people who take a name take it for more than one of these reasons.

In the trad I follow, we also require dedicates to take a name. It is done for all three reasons. 1) Sometimes we have students or people connected to students who we do not want to have our legal names (for many reasons.) 2) Spiritually, it helps differentiate the dedicates and students, encourages them to look for a name that helps express what they want to become, and helps give them a ritual persona they can use to step out of the not so spiritual parts of their lives (usually something dedicates need). 3) Closely tied to 2, it does start a process of bringing the name into effect in the person's life.

Initiates also take names, but it is a different process.

I agree with Raven Greywind, it is simply one way of finding your "magical name." Try whatever is comfortable for you. And if you don't find it straight away, don't worry. It shall pop up when you least expect it, even if you are just reading some completely unrelated book!

Damn. See, I need a cool magical name - but being that I don't practice much magic - it might not really serve a purpose. I just need a cool sounding name. Names like Bob, Rick, John, Steve, Tony, Bill, Ronald... These names say nothing, other than that neither of their parents were creative or had taste. :)

I have always thought that a Magikal name is only used when like said above, more than one person in a coven have the same name...or when you associate negativity with your actuall birth name, Like me for example, I feel more comfortable having different names to go by with different people...you know. I still have yet to find my magikal name, I have had a few "false" names that just didnt appeal to me at all..but someday I will find one that suits me well...:)

People are associating magickal names with magick. does it always have to be this way? Why can't it simply be an alternate name, or a spiritual name? For example, the Catholics have religious names.

:) Nah it doesn't have to... Amazingly though, both individual words that make up my Pagan name have the same #s as by Birth name and by Birth Date...

It doesn't have to be. In the trad I follow, even though there are magical considerations and purposes for the name, an initiate's name is primarily a spiritual name. It is taken as part of the rebirth and adoption into the trad lineage.

The only thing that a magical name *must* have, is meaning to you!

A magical name isnt even necessary. My old one doesn't fit anymore... so i don't have one. **shrug**

I have never wanted to change my name it has always been special to me!! I am named after my Mother's older brother! Who was in Vietnam. My mother and my uncle disowned eachother just b4 he died of cancer! Naming me after him was her way of saying she was sorry and she loved him!! So i think my name is magical!

A magickal name can be derived from anything. The important thing is that you choose a name that you are comfortable with and that has personal meaning. The more personal meaning it has the better.
