I'm not sure if this is "see how much you know" or "take a moment to think about what you believe" :)

Useful tho! I would suggest to anyone to print it out and do it, see what you think.. :)

If it's not from SilverRW's book, it's very similar. I'm not her biggest fan, so I don't own any of her books. I had to take a test a few years ago, just like this, that came out of one of her books. It was meant by my teacher as: see what you know. It was only a part of what I had to do, but it gave me things to think about. Like what I easily answered must have been more important to me at the time. Or things I'd be interested in learning more about. Most of it's just the basics, so it seems generally a good starting place to judge your mundane knowledge of the Craft.

It's definitely really similiar. I dusted off my copy. Most of the questions are exactly alike; some are left out or added in this version though. And the numbers on some have changed.

By the way, this test has been taken way out of context. It was originally printed in "To Stir A Magick Cauldron" by Silver RavenWolf, and it was provided as a resource - Silver having said that it was the test BlackForest Clan initiates have to get 97% on to get accepted. It is *NOT* intended to be a general Wicca 101 test, nor a representation of the beliefs of all Wiccans, JUST a resource and test for those who wish to be accepted into the BlackForest Clan. I would presume each test taken is marked individually by some higher member of the BlackForest Clan, and there aren't any "right" answers - the answers are correct if they show careful thought and research as well as the teachings of the BlackForest Clan, not if they fit into someone's rules of what Wicca as a whole is.

The one shown here was taken off the website of someone who obviously copied several pages of Silver RavenWolf and probably without permission or credit, and has been presented, again, OUT OF CONTEXT.

(not your fault Andromeda, but the fault of the person who printed it on their site)

Ok, did the test, wasn't as easy as I actually thought. There are some questions I couldn't even answer with the help of a book. Maybe one of you could help me:

7. What is a kitchen Witch?

just a witch practicing in a kitchen??

13. What is Widdershins?

yes, what?

14. What is deosil?

*shrug*

49. How do you Draw Down the Moon?

often heard of it, never tried it...

71. How many Witch's does it take to screw in a light bulb?

read the same question on a pagan jokes site

139. What is the difference between a left-hand and right-hand
path?

is there a difference?

Widdershins is a word meaning "counterclockwise." Deosil means "clockwise."

:)

Avena

Ah thanks!

Why can't they just say clock- and counterclockwise instead of "Widdershins" and stuff??! 8O

They say deosil and widdershins because they're magickal words, not mundane like clockwise and counterclockwise.

A kitchen witch is someone who practices folk magick instead of ceremonial; he or she is often found in the kitchen or in the garden. The focus of their magick is often herbs and recipes, sometimes gemstones and often faeries or devas.

Drawing down the Moon is what is done when the Goddess is invoked into a Priestess such that the Goddess will bring wisdom and teachings to the coven through the Priestess or such that She will be directly present in and part of the Circle. Some people think it's an unnecessary ritual being as the Goddess is always around, but some feel it's an ecstatic joyful ritual to be done usually at the full moon.

#71. IS a joke.

Left handed often means "darker" such a Satanism or Voodoo magick, whereas right handed often means "lighter" as in Wicca. According to some ceremonialists this distinction was made by Christians because of the work of people who practiced Tantric Yoga. If a ritual in that Yoga would involve symbolic sex the Priestess would sit to the right of the Priest; if it were to involve actual sex she'd sit to the left. Christian people who interpreted Indian literature on these rituals gave "left" the negative connotations it has today, according to these ceremonialists ( http://www.angelfire.com/nt/dragon9/MYTHS.html #5).

Now aren't you glad you took the time to do the test? That's why I think many Pagans or at least Wiccans should look at it - not to find the "RIGHT" answers, but to do the research involved in the making of Wicca, and to learn and explore your personal beliefs.

Andromeda
September 17th, 2001, 02:37 PM
Well I knew it wasn't a representation of all Wiccan Beliefs....I was just thinking it might be nice to help expand the Knowledge of Wiccans that are just beginning, it might help as a reference. Like you said Swan "it doesnt HURT anything to have some "knowledge" . And Sure, no bodys answer is going to be the same...

Twilight Garden

Like people said earlier. There's really NOT a correct answer. I can say with confidence, that not being able to answer these questions does NOT make a person less of a witch. In my eyes a witch is something you are born, not just something you learn.

:)Just another way to answer (by Avena) some questions.

I usually think of a "kitchen witch" as just how it sounds. Practicing "Kitchen Witching" would be stirring "intentions" to your meals, recipes, and probably knowing a great deal on the magickal effects of foods and herbs. (picture the witch stirring her brew and mumbling, that's me)

Widdershins & deosil, to me, are optional anyway and the "meanings" are influenced by others.
Wid=clock-way=adding, bringing, attracting.
Deo=counterclock-way=getting rid of, letting go
... in general.
To me they are not needed, only a symbol of the energy you are trying to utilize. To some they are just as valid as say calling a diety to assist in spells or Rites.

Left/Right - what Willow Raven said. (though I'm not sure who chooses what is right & left...To me voodoo doesn't always mean left handed)
To some though, (on a completely different thought) right handed people use their right hand to direct energy, left hand to receive. Vice versa for left handed people.

Just some random thoughts...

Thanks for answering my questions! :)

But I STILL haven't figured out:

1. Is a kitchen witch, when practicing folk magick etc, the same as a traditional witch?

2. When you do a spell/ritual in which you have to do something clockwise or counterclockwise, how do these "directions" actually influence your ritual? I mean, does Widdershins (for example) stand for receiving energy and deosil for sending energy or vice versa, or why exactly do I have to decide whether to do something clockwise or counterclockwise???

3. (no specific problem) To say that magick is lefthanded when it is "dark" I find somehow stupid, not only because it's a Christian invention to (once again) disparage sex, but rather because (to me) it would sound more logical to say it the other way round and say lefhanded means light or white magick, as the left hand is closer to your heart. :heartthro

I'm fairly certain that widdershines usually corresponds to banishing, negative energies or magicks, and deosil is usually building up and positive energy. Like, if you were going to cast a circle to banish a disease, you might cast it widdershins, and if you were going to... I don't know, try and bring happy energy to you, you would go deosil.

Someone shut me up if I'm wrong.

Depends what you mean by traditional witch. Someone who is in a trad? Someone who is lineaged and learned through a line of Witches? Someone who practiced in a cottage centuries ago?
