View Full Version : Fairy Crosses

While visiting the fossil digging center in Republic, Washington, I came across a small naturally occuring stone in the gift shop. They are small stone crosses, some equal armed, some more like a crucifix. I purchaced an equal armed one, thinking if they were called fairy stones, there MUST be some sort of Pagan meaning for them, or there would be some attributes like luck or otherworld sight.. like most gems and stones. The printed reading material describing the stones say they are found only in Virginia and directly surrounding areas. It then went on to say that the folk story of their creation is that when the fairies heard of Christ's death they cried. Their tears on the ground formed the stones.
Ok, now THAT sounds like an obvious Christianization if you ask me. Anyone know anything about these fairy crosses and how they relate to Pagan themes or magical practices and lore?

I have a faerie cross that was given to me in Cherokee, NC, this time last year. I don't know any lore about them, though. ... If anyone else does, I'm sure WaterLilly and I would both be grateful. And I agree, the fey crying over the death of Christ seems ... strange ... somehow.

http://www.heartmagic.com/mermade8.html is a webpage that seems to echo the Christ story you heard. :)
I looked, but couldn't find anything else. :(

Well, if anyone has any insights on the attributes of the stones... (I'm not very good at reading stones/gems otherwise I'd volunteer) we could always make up a story. That is how all fables/lore begins, isn't it?

Plaugh!!!!
Fairy crosses are formations. The crystal/stone forms in that pattern.
I have alot of them. It is like the rose stones. The stones form in the rose pattern.
The faries have better things to do....
Oh well - I will give it as it being a cute story.
Most faries I know of barely pay attention to us...unless I am mowing the yard..... Much less know about Christianity....
I think it helps the stone shops sell them to customers.
Also, most of the pretty rocks outside of rock shops - just glass - recycled glass....how do I know???? I ran a stone shop in North GA.
I also bought some dreaming crystal. It is supposed to only form in Cherokee near the reservation. Found some in Arizona....same stuff....
I think that faries prefer crystal, but that is just my opinion.
I guess it is like the dogwood tree. With the symbolic cross and blood and puncture wounds.
Hey, I LOVE it the way the pagan ritual slipped into the Chruch. My family is Lutheran and we have Chrismon trees in the church and Christmas. They put beautiful hand made ornaments on the trees.....WHOA!!! I remember the Celtic/Druid celebration ....lets bring in the greenery....
Oh I guess I am rambling again....My faries also like riverstones. I kayak and bring some back when I do a river...I have a special white oak that I place sacred stuff around...they DIG it....
Have a wonderful weekend,
Babs
